I worked from home for 8 weeks starting around 8 weeks. It was good timing for me. My job was flexible in that I could do it at night or weekends when DH was home if needed. There were no day to day deadlines or set hours I needed to meet.

@macintosh: ok I was where you were a year ago. I felt great at 4 weeks and was ready to go back to work, I tried to bring DS to my office which didn't work. At 5.5 weeks I started taking him to the babysitter but the main difference is that I didn't have someone to watch him at the office with your DH being there and you just needing to answer calls I think you could make 4 weeks work provided you have an uncomplicated delivery

@birdofafeather: I like your idea. The good thing is that I basically only work when the phone rings, so during the off season it's more like a PT job anyway.

@Mae: My DH will be there. He would be able to do certain things, like hold and soothe the baby. Because if his disability (doesn't walk independently yet, can't use left arm) I will have to do the bulk of the baby care. I do plan to breastfeed.

My hours are set because I work when the phone support line is open. On a busy day I may take 10-15 calls all day and each one can take 5-15 minutes. Between calls I have tons of free time. I have actually been squeezing in a nap every afternoon, and this is one of our busier times. I know, I'm very lucky. I can also take short breaks as needed and I get am hour for lunch.

And thanks to the 3 of you who said I'm crazy

so many questions.

Will someone else be there to watch the baby? Or are you thinking you're going to try to do both?

Do you plan to breastfeed?

Are your hours flexible or rigid?

Unless your hours are flexible and you are not full time, I would not plan on watching the baby AND working... ever. At least I couldn't do it yet at 4.5 mo. If you have someone else to watch the baby I think you could do it around 4-6 weeks-- unless you're breastfeeding. In which case you're going to need more time to get that well established (maybe 8 weeks?) unless you could take every third hour or so off to breastfeed.

I'm right in the middle of this! I told my clients I'd be back on the first monday of October, which will be 8w PP. At this point, I can get DS down for a few hours worth of naps on most days, but otherwise I'm learning to work with him in the Boba (like right now!). Not sure whats going to happen when I try and work for real on Monday!

Man, you just don't know how you're gonna feel, ya know? I would keep working until I went into labor if I were you. I normally am all about taking more leave but it sounds like your job is much easier to do from home without baby than with! I said 6 weeks but since it's busy season, can you ask for at least 4 weeks fully off and then do like 10-20 hours a week til 6-8 weeks?

@mrs. tictactoe: thanks for responding. I totally hear you.

I should mention that after the busy season ends it's basically dead and there could be no calls in a whole day.

I think you'll need 6 weeks, even working from home. The first two months are SO HARD.

I work from home answering technical support calls as a contractor for a small company. I'm 9 weeks pregnant and I'm trying to decide how much time I'll need off before I tell my employer.

The company is so small that they don't have to abide by FMLA. There is no maternity leave in our benefits package. In fact, I'm the only female employee.

My employer is very understanding though, and he has given me lots if flexibility including flex time to take my husband to physical therapy appointments twice a week. The fact that I work from home is an accommodation due to DH's disability.

My due date happens to fall right at the beginning of a month-long busy season, so I know my boss will need a temp to cover for me. Since this is my first child, I have no idea how much time I realistically need to take off after the birth before I can turn on my phone and take calls. 4 weeks? Less? I'd appreciate any input from experienced Moms.
