I bought some maternity tops but didn't start wearing them until I announced because most of them look like maternity tops unless you wear flowy/baby doll type tops on a regular basis. For my last pregnancy and this one I've been able to wear a few of my regular tops throughout pregnancy.

Oh, and I agree with other PP's that some maternity shirts (the more form fitting ones) look funny unless you have a belly to fill them out. My bump isn't that big, but I am just now fitting into some of my "tight" maternity shirts at 39 weeks!

I was the same size maternity top I was in regular clothes, and stayed the same size all the way through.
I am 39 weeks and still wearing the same size maternity tops/bottoms.
They come with lots of room for a growing belly... if you are a small now, you will probably be a size small maternity shirt. There will be lots of room at first but you will grow into them!

I got shirts like 3 weeks ago, and still haven't gotten pants...my boobs grew, and maternity shirts are SO comfy. I highly recommend them!

I bought maternity tops early on. My boobs expanded fast, so my shorter shirts and regular ts didn't work at 5 weeks, and my cat shredded all but one of my hip-length shirts (well, there are also the muumuu like shirts, but I'm not that desperate.) At 10 weeks, the only bottoms I'm not wearing like normal are my jeans. My fat jeans are still really comfy, though I can't exactly slide my whole arm down them any more. I wear mostly skirts to begin with, though.

I did buy one maternity skirt - it's been too warm out for my long ones, and I wanted something I could wear all summer. It is the shortest skirt I've ever worn in public.

I was happy to realize, when my yoga pants were getting uncomfortable on my belly, that my yoga pants are NOT larges, but are actually mediums. Yay!

I bought maternity jeans and work pants around 15-18 weeks, I think. At that time I also bought a few maternity shirts - but mostly just tank tops, under shirts, etc. Most of my non-maternity clothes are pretty stretchy. I was fitting into a size S before I got pregnant and I'm still fitting into a majority of my shirts now (26w4d). I'm looking forward to it getting warmer outside because I know I'll be able to make most/if not all of my non-maternity dresses/skirts work for me for a while it seems.

I didn't buy any maternity clothes at all- I bought regular stuff a size or two up. If you pick long tops, or tunic style, you'll get away with those for a good while. And my bump's not tiny or anything. I just found it to hard to find comfy maternity stuff I liked, it was far easier just to go up sizes. Cheaper, too.

If you are planning on breastfeeding and/or pumping, you could also look for maternity tops that are also nursing-friendly so you get more use out of them. I found a few at Old Navy, surprisingly.

I am going to have a tough time hiding my bump because i always wear my blouses tucked into my skirts/pants at work. Once i break out the flowy tops, even if they are non-maternity, people will probably start to notice =/

I bought a couple of maternity tops but they were way too loose on me. I started wearing maternity pants at 16 weeks (22 weeks now) I just went to the Gap outlet this weekend and bought a few shirts one size bigger. I think its much more flattering and cheaper.

Oh, I should say I bought mat. tops in my normal size (XS) and they have been fine for me. A few tops are getting a little short, but I wear a camisole under everything so not a huge problem.

Maternity tops looked strange on me until I had a bump to start to fill them out - one thing to keep in mind.
I've been the same size in maternity tops throughout (Medium - same as pre-pregnancy), but the issue I've run into is them not being long enough at the end of the pregnancy. So when you buy maternity shirts and think they look too long, they won't be when you hit 35+ weeks!

I held off on tops until I needed them but I was able to wear sweaters over my shirts to hide the little bump. My suggestion would be that when you do buy tops, buy them larger than what you think you will need. I fit into Mediums until about 25 weeks and then had to move up to large.

I bought a few tops in size L and XL (I'm usually a size M to L for tops) and looked like a tent until 4 months when I revealed my pregnancy at work. Sucked because I was basically dressing to look fat. I survived in those until I revealed, then finally moved onto my maternity tops.

I need maternity tops because between my boobs and my (pretty sizeable) belly, regular tops would be way too short in front!

I bought both tops and bottoms at 7 weeks. Have been wearing the bottoms ever since, but the tops are still all way too big (am almost 12 weeks now)

All of my pre-pregnancy tops were really tight and form-fitting so I am really lacking in the top department right now. Everything is either way too small or way too big.

I think it depends on what you already have. If you have non maternity shirts that are flowy, you could get away with those. But if you need to buy new clothes anyway I'd just get maternity because you will have to eventually anyway.

I got some longer flowy tops to get me through weeks 10-20 and started wearing maternity tops around 20 weeks (I'm usually a size Petite XS and instead I just got size XS or S).. I didn't have any in between stuff, and I'm happy I got them because I feel like they will be good for post-partum when my tummy isn't in the best shape : )

I bought pants, but held off on getting tops. I am 37 weeks now, and am REALLY tired of wearing the same tops every day. I would hold off on the tops as long as possible just for variety. I don't mind wearing the same pants, since I don't even notice. But the lack of variety in tops is drivign me nuts!

So I went ahead and skipped the Bella Band and opted to buy maternity pants early to get the most wear out of them (12.5 wks)...

I'm wondering if I should go ahead and purchase maternity tops earlier too, or if I should just get by with larger non-maternity tops since I don't really don't how big my belly will get and what maternity size I will end up being?

For those that purchased maternity clothes pretty early on, did you buy both tops and bottoms? I'm trying to hide my bloat/pooch from coworkers for at least a few wks...
