thanks guys! it seems like it is kind of the norm in my area... things are crazy expensive and in my research, she doesn't even seem to be the most expensive. i have found a few that seem to be good options but i don't love their photos. get what you pay for i guess. i just found one that seems really reasonable though.
how does this sound?
$700. maternity shoot, newborn shoot, 6 month shoot, 1 year shoot... 25-30 images on a disc for each shoot. pretty good, right???

We have paid between $200-$350 per shoot (didn't do a package) but have gotten the disk included so that we could print our own images. I agree with everyone that a) look until you find a photographer who offers a package in your price range - it may take awhile but you will find it and b) ensure that you get the disk of images (all or at least 30) included. We often print our images through Walgreens online and they come out perfect for less than $1 a photo...so it saves you a lot more money in the long run not to purchase the photo printing through your photog.

@loki: whoa that's crazy expensive. We haven't done our newborn shoot yet (baby is due at the end of the month) but she does amazing work and provides props and styling. $250 for a 2 hour newborn session with the CD of 20-40 edited high resolution photos. Your photographer's print prices are too high for me!

I would absolutely try to find someone who provides all of the edited images on a CD, with the cost built into the package. I can't imagine having to pick and choose (and spend a fortune on) a few prints! Good luck with your search!

@Smurfette: ya i think i'll have to!

@NeekieRose: see, i'd be willing to pay around $600 if i knew i was going to get lots of images that i could print/share.

@LuLu Mom: ya i'm going to try to find someone who will give me rights etc. my engagement photos i paid $400 but got probably 100 images on a disc! it was great.

@Synchronicity: i used to a photographer in the dominican (obviously different) but i thought my pics were pretty great. i paid $2000 for ALL images, a next day photoshoot, an hour long edited video and a youtube trailer! so $1200 for 20 images is a bit of a hard pill to swallow. maybe my expectations are unrealistic.

i've sent out some emails to a bunch of photographers... hopefully i'll find someone whose packages make it possible for me to get all the photos i want!

eta: thanks all for your input, i appreciate!

I don't do photogs that require you to buy digital images or prints through them...it just gets to be way too expensive! We paid $150 for each session (maternity, newborn, 1 year) and that includes a disk with images. Then we can print as many or as few as we want, and we don't have to print through the photog.

personally I would keep looking, at least in our area the majority of photographers have moved to releasing the rights of pictures on a disc included in the session price. this is a necessity for me, I want to be able to print my own prints and canvas.

@loki: I paid $500 for the newborn shoot and an additional $100 for the mini-maternity shoot. This included all images. She quoted a low number of shots (8 for maternity, 20 for newborn), but I ended up getting about double that. I will only use people who include the digital files of all pictures, that way I know what my cost will be upfront.

I paid $400 for a package that included maternity, hospital, newborn, 3-6-9-12 months photos. I get all the edited images on discs. She was just starting out at the time. She now charges $800 for the same package. I will pay $800 for my next child. I love having all the pictures of T.

We end up spending about $1k a session not including the price of just the shoot. Photography is expensive. It also depend on where you live and what photographer you use. We live on very expensive area so it's just the going rate here.

If you have seen her portfolio and love her shots I say do it! The pics I have of DD are 100 times better than DS's who I paid maybe $200 for the whole thing vs $500 for DD.

It was a shock at the price but now she is 3.5 and I love that I have them - I still have 2 of them hanging in her room

So she has packages... $199 gets me 5 images in digital format. It also says web sharing versions but I emailed back to get clarification if that means of just the 5 images or of all images. 15 digital images is $499 and 30 is $799. the two larger packages come with print credits and also say web sharing version.

80x10s are $40 and it just goes up from there. digital images are $75. i will be spending AT LEAST $800 for 20 photos over the four photoshoots. and that doesn't include prints. i'm not sure if it's average, i just don't think it's something we could justify with a brand new babe. funds are tight enough.

$450 for 4 sessions is around $110 for each session fee which I would say is average.

I paid $150 for the NB session fee and had to buy at least $150 in prints - when a 5x7 is $25 it adds up really quick!

Looking back though it was worth every penny!

Her digital copies were $100 each - ouch - I didn't get any of those
