I plan to use mattress pads, to make changing in the middle of the night easier. I also registered for QuickZip sheets for the same reason. Instead of stripping the whole bed, I can just zip off the top of the sheet, pull out the mattress pad, put in a new pad, and zip on a clean sheet. I have no desire to try to pull out and change the whole mattress at 3am!

yeah - I think we have the same one - definitely super firm.

And it does feel like pee could run right off the side! EEk!

This mattress cover isn't plush at all, it's just like a cottony thick weight, so everything is still firm, but I think it will be nice to have on there.

@hellobeeboston: We have the same mattress (I think I knew this already actually, lol)! The mattress is super firm, right? Not at all cozy feeling...but I guess it's not supposed to be soft.

The only issue I could see with not having a mattress pad is if liquid (aka, pee!), seeps through the sheet and then drips off the mattress, since it's waterproof and won't soak it up--it could then go down the sides of the crib, on the skirt, etc. I think the mattress pad is slightly absorbent on top, while having a waterproof middle/backing. So maybe it would be helpful to have.

@hilsy85: hey - we got the naturepedic mattress and got the naturepedic waterproof cover to go over it.... my MIL got them for us - and once I got them in the room, it did seem like overkill since the mattress was waterproof... but I liked that the cover was softer and made the bed seem slightly "cozier" and maybe warmer for the winter months.

@hilsy85: As long as the seems are sealed and there is no way liquid could get through the seams I'd say you are okay without one but if they aren't, that is where you are going to have issues.

@looch: Ah ok...no it doesn't. I guess I was thinking I would just wipe it down? But it seems like a mattress pad is the way to go!

I think the mattress covers do their job, for us it was a matter of making our life easier for those middle of the night sheet changes!

@hilsy85: I meant the cover on the mattress...does that zip off?

I'd be on the safe side and use a mattress pad. It's easier if you have to change in the middle of the night.

@looch: This is the mattress cover: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=12334193&fromRegistryNumber=48575533&product_skn=296168
It does come off/can be washed.

@pelikila: This is the description of the mattress material: "organic cotton fabric with easy-to-clean 100% polyethylene waterproof surface (so pure it meets food contact standards). Provides the ultimate non-toxic and stain resistant waterproof mattress cover."

@jessiejo17: Hmm didn't think about stains...

I did. We put the waterproof mattress cover, a waterproof pad in the center and then the fitted sheet. This way if she got the sheet wet, I could just pull off the sheet and the pad but leave the fitted mattress protector on.

Possibly. To me it would depend on the seams, the fabric type that is waterproof, etc.
