I had twins, both with declining fluid and post mature placentas...grade 2 I think. OB noticed around 37 weeks and started keeping a closer eye on the placentas and the babies growth and movements, etc. I ended up being induced at 39+2.

My son was totally fine, but my daughter had many of the classic signs of a mature placenta like majorly flaky skin all over her body and low birth weight (5 lb 4 oz). She also had like baggy elephant skin on her legs, almost like she had been bigger and lost weight, but who knows.

My OB said it wasn't a reason for me to be super concerned given the gest age of my babes, and sees stage 2 placentas even in women in the 2nd tri. But in my case the low fluid + calcifying placentas + twins at 39 weeks meant that the babies were better out than in :)

It was somewhere around 34-36 weeks that I had an ultrasound done and the tech told me she noticed the placenta was calcifying. (I had a lot of ultrasounds done because of some abnormal results in my second tri screening.) They never graded it though.

My OB never seemed to be too concerned because they were keeping a close eye on baby's growth anyways, but I'm assuming it wasn't a 3 or anything because they didn't order any further testing. The fact that your baby is scoring well seems reassuring - the placenta must still be doing its job! Either way, its good that your Dr. has a close eye on things!

For me it was my first pregnancy and they planned to let me go to my due date, but not too long after. My LO came 2 days early, all on her own.

I did not....but because I had placental issues from the get-go (a placenta that was late to kick in due to lack of progesterone)....I did get a test at 22w with my normal u/s that I was in for. Everything came back great BUT she did go through the run-down with me and said that yeah...I'd be looking at an early induction had my placenta began early deterioration or...maturing too quickly.
Good luck with everything! I know 2-3 girls at least who have had their babies between 32-34 weeks and the kids have done VERY well....short nicu stays and no long term ailments. Since, you are passed the 34w mark: I'd say you have nothing to worry about except the trouble of an induction :(

So at 33 weeks I had an elective 3-D ultrasound done and the guy said that I had a mature placenta already. At my 34 week appt, I asked my doctor about it and she ordered an ultrasound, a biophysical test, and a doppler test. I just finished up the tests, the tech said the baby scored an 8/8 on the biophysical, but that my placenta was a grade 2 to 3, and that 90% of all the placentas she sees are grade 1's. So now I'm waiting for the doctor to review my test results and call me to tell me what that means and what the results of the other tests were.

Has anyone else had a mature placenta? Did you end up going into labor or being induced early?
