@gingerblonde: @twodoghouse: Thanks. :) We love it and that's what matters I suppose! I think sometimes people just don't know what to say (when a simple, "congratulations! That's a great name!" would suffice) so they end up saying something stupid instead.

@gingerblonde: I'm not a May mom but I was lurking and have to say - Alicia Claire is absolutely lovely! I'm sorry you haven't received a better response on the name front - some people just don't have a clue and don't know when to shut up. And that's a beautiful name, so clearly those folks don't have much in the way of taste! ;) (fwiw, we announced our unborn DD's name --Marlowe Rose -- and not one person IRL has said anything positive either. It is what it is. :()

@twodoghouse: I am now, of course, wishing I hadn't told anyone. We love the name Alice - it's DH's grandmother's name - which is actually how we came to Alicia! I think it's beautiful, good work. :)

I still go back and forth between Otis and Owen. We have decided to stick with one of the two and not introduce any others. We'll decide when he's born. No emergency girl name choices either as DH has finally accepted the fact that its a boy. I think if it were a girl we might have gone with Nora Helen.

@gingerblonde: I really like Alicia and it sounds so pretty with Claire!

@gingerblonde: We picked a similar first name (Alice) so I'm a little biased, but I think Alicia is beautiful! Also, my favorite aunt is named Alicia, so I have such a great association with that name. I'm sorry that responses to your choice have been lukewarm. I think people are just weird about names sometimes. I am afraid to tell many people our names because I want everyone to love the names as much as I do, and I know they are not everyone's cup of tea. They aren't weird names (at least, I don't think so!) but they are probably not the style of a lot of people I know, so we're mostly keeping them to ourselves. I just don't want to hear anyone's less than enthusiastic response because they are perfect to me! :) Alicia Claire is perfect to you (and your SO, I assume) and that is ALL that matters!

@Mae: @anandam: Thank you both - that is very kind and validating. I know in my head that it's a nice name and there isn't anything weird about it.. but for some reason, I am being affected much more than I thought I would be by the lack of enthusiasm from my girlfriends. I'm going to try to get a grip! Thanks again.

@gingerblonde: People are so weird about names. We haven't told anybody our top considerations except by accident when it slipped out, and both times it got a weird confused look and they repeated the name as if something gross was in their mouths while they said it. Some friends just keep calling the baby what they want them to be named - Diego, Serafina, Natasha... we're like, um. None of those are this child's name.

So I say stick with it if you love it. It's lovely, it's special but not weird. There's nothing I can think of that makes it unappealing - Maybe people have an aversion to a famous Alicia? Or to a stinky kid who they went to school with? Or an ex? Could be anything. I also think people just like to express opinions about all things pregnancy/parenting related, and don't always think about how they affect the receiver.

@gingerblonde: whaaaat? I'm so surprised that you haven't gotten great responses! I guess Alicia is not super popular right now (although it is still in the top 300!), but I don't think that's a bad thing at all. It's not like "Jessica" which I think peaked and would sound really sort of odd/dated on a new baby. I think it has definitely lasting power. I think Alicia Claire is beautiful!

And no, we haven't discussed it anymore. Sort of shockingly to myself-- I'm kind of cool just living in indecision until a decision presents itself to me. But I have also sort of decided that until I make another decision, she's Fiona June. It is my husband's favorite and what he calls her, and I like calling her something. But we're just not telling anyone we're calling her that in case I change my mind at some point :) (But I do sort of think it will be Fiona June)

@Mae: So have you come to a consensus yet?? :) I am so curious! I really do like both - you're not going to make a 'bad' choice - but I get what you're saying about feeling like you are losing something by picking one.

We 'decided' on Alicia Claire... and I made the foolish error of sharing with my friends, and not just my safe board buddies! Of course, the response was lukewarm at best, and not impressed at worst. And now, as stupid as it is, I am feeling insecure about our choice. I like the name and that should be all that matters... but I am surprised that no one has told me that it's great or beautiful or that they like it. There has been criticism from all fronts. Is there something I'm not considering about this name?

@gingerblonde: love it! I especially love Claire as a middle name. It was high on my list and I think if we'd decided on Eva she would be Eva Claire because Eva June doesn't sound quite right to me.

And nothing really happened to sway my husband. I think that after mulling over the options for a while he just developed more of a love for Fiona than Penelope. And I think he likes it especially because we have a verrrry irish last name so Fiona really flows well with it, sounds like she'd be just off the clover patch or whatever they have in ireland haha. I agree re: nicknames though. Thats always been my holdup with Fiona is no good nicknames. Penelope would be called Penny.

I can just see a lot of pros/cons for each. For Fiona, I love that it sounds so irish and it is more unusual/unpopular, and that it is my husband's favorite. For Penelope, I love that it has great nicknames, and I like that her initials would be P.J. (penelope june) because those are my mom's initials and I just think it would be a fun family connection, especially since June is a family name for my husband (chosen because we love it, not as an honor name, but still). But I'm still at the point where when I think: Okay Fiona is IT then I get sad at not using Penelope. But when I think okay then, Penelope it is! I get sad at not using Fiona. haha

@Mae: Frontrunner is Alicia Claire. :) I like it because it seems feminine, ladylike and I like it both said aloud and written on paper. Husband likes it because his grandmother's name is Alice, and apparently the initials ACB are a big thing in his family (many of his cousins and other relatives have those initials, and so would our daughter with this name).

What happened that changed your husband's mind to strongly preferring Fiona over Penelope? I have to say that I really love both names and can see a case being made for each. I think Penelope lends itself to nicknames/shortening in a way that Fiona does not. I think it's only fair that you get final say, though maybe I'm a bit biased!

I know what you mean about having a hard time committing - I am in nursery decorating mode like a beast, but I don't want to order name letters or a decal until I'm 100000% sure. And it's hard to make it official with friends and family - a couple of my friends gave me somewhat negative feedback on some names that I really liked, which is why I've decided to keep this name under wraps... except to my anonymous May chat mommas, of course! ;)

@gingerblonde: Care to share what the front runner is?! :) I feel like I'm in the same place as you. We got down to Fiona, Penelope, and Eva and sat for weeks unsure. I was leaning slightly Penelope, my husband started leaning strongly Fiona. Since he felt more strongly than I did we decided to call her Fiona for now but have agreed I can change to any of our top 3 at any time and I have final say since I'm cooking her haha. (And we both genuinely love all the names). But we're not telling any of our family or friends we've moved from our top 3 until we're sure. And we may not mention it at all before she is born and it's for sure-for sure. I do really love Fiona but I'm having a hard time committing and giving up the other 2!

@Mamasig: Oh that's funny! I am curious now what they are! ;)

I definitely have a front-runner at this point. I think it's our unofficial name decision. We're kind of letting it sit, using it in sentences, writing it, etc. Just making sure we "live in it" for a while before we officially commit and start buying stuff that has initials, haha.

@cheesetomywhine: I can absolutely see the sense in having a back-up in case you deliver and the name just doesn't fit. That's a good plan!

Any May mamas getting closer on names? - we have managed to whittle it down a bit, but aren't there yet.
Here are the top contenders as of now:

Alicia
Christina
Isabel
Annabelle
Madeline

I really like Madeline, but know so many little girls with the nickname Maddie (for Madeline, Madison, Madelyn, etc.) and it's kind of hard to avoid it as a nickname... it's DH's favorite on the list though.

@Mae: FWIW, I don't think Penelope sounds Spanish. I mean, I know Penelope Cruz is probably the highest-profile person with that name (that I can think of), but I still don't hear it and think, "Oh, they must be Latina." Actually, I've seen a number of sources that suggest that Penelope is a derivative of the traditional Irish name Fionnghuala (how, I do not know). So, in a way, it's just right with an Irish name and works in the root name of Fiona as well : )

And I know you weren't knocking the name, I was just venting because after Greys (which I've never actually seen) it's totally become a girls name and like you said, I can't see naming a boy Addison bc he'd have three other Addisons in his class and they'd all be girls!

So in the last several weeks we've only managed to whittle our list of 8 down to a list of 5 (and when I say we, I mean me, because my husband seems to be putting no further thought into this haha). I just have stupid hang-ups about every name that are holding me back from committing!

Ava (too popular? It was #3 in Ohio and #5 nationally last year)

Clara (will everyone think we named her after YHL's daughter?)

Eva (my husband seems the least enthused about this name, although he has said it's fine if that is what I want. But I want him to LOVE the name-- his favs are Ava, Fiona, and Penelope but he's said he'd be perfectly happy with any of these)

Fiona (no good nickname. Don't like Fi or Nona, and it is 3 syllables so I think it will end up getting shortened to one of those)

Penelope (too much of a mouthful? Does it sound too weirdly ethnic? I worry it sounds spanish which would be weird with our very irish last name. But I love love love love the nn Penny)

Sigh. I'm probably officially at the over-thinking stage.

Since we don't know what we're having yet, I'll post our choices for either sex.

For a boy, it will be Hawkins Louis T. Louis is DH's grandfather's and great-great grandfather's name. Hawkins is my mother's maiden name. Men for generations in her family have been nicknamed Hawk, but my uncle died without a son, so we'll carry it on!

For a girl, we are unsure. For a while, Aurelia was the winner, but DH has been waffling. Here are some others in the running:

Juna (slightly different than June, but people would still know how to pronounce it)
Nova
Freya (I keep trying to talk DH into this...still working on it!)
Mirabel (DH loves this; I am not wild about it)
Carys
Elina

Side note: my husband really really loved the name North for a boy (and has been saying so for years). I was overjoyed when Kim K. named her child that because I knew I would get out of having to name a future son that ; )

@NorCalWayfarer: Not to knock Addison! It's a nice name. But I just don't want my son in 6th grade homeroom with two other Addisons who are girls!

So a weird thing happened at our anatomy scan yesterday. On all of the printouts, it said "Har-low" in the upper corner. No idea what that signifies. But DH took it as a sign that we must name him Harlow. I kind of can't argue with that. But then we went to the SSA website to see the popularity of the name for boys, and it peaked in the 1930s at like number 950 on the top 1000, then since 2009 it has been in the 500s for girls! So his whole theory about how it has historically been a boys name is bunk, because it is twice as popular for girls as it has ever been for boys. Damn you Nicole Richie!!

Also I thought of one last night that I love: Tate. I think of the movie Little Man Tate. It means "cheerful."

@whodat: Totally stalking your guys' name board (I'm a July 2014 momma), and just wanted to interject that Addison is traditionally a boys name (and is a popular boys name in my family). I was really upset when it was "feminized" and now I feel like I *can't* use it for a boy since it's such a trendy girl name now!

@Mamasig: I like your criteria -- I'm looking for names that sound good in both languages and boys names are really hard (we also have Leo and Gabriel on the short boys list).

Loving all the beautiful names on here!
