@matador84: @Weagle: Similar thing happened to us! We were gifted our non-breathable bumpers and had it set up in the crib before LO was born... when we finally put LO in the crib to sleep when he was 5 months old... we took them off but he would wiggle around so much and get his little legs in the bars we decided to put them back. I think after reading this thread though... I'll take them down again. :)

We opted out of bumpers, even though they look adorable. With the associated risks, it was 100 PB dollars I didn't need to spend.

I think they should be banned... @Mrs. Jacks: my little brother fell down the stairs in a walker. Luckily he wasn't seriously injured at the time, but my parents have always worried about it ever since...

@cascademom: You must have had a different nurse than we did. The CPR instructor was our least favorite. She was well-intentioned, but you could just tell she didn't have kids of her own. When discussing how SIDS generally happens between 3-6 months, she said something about how it wasn't as bad if it was earlier since you hadn't really gotten to know the baby yet! Um, what?

@rattles: Hmm, interesting, but not surprising with the city. I don't remember our Northwestern CPR nurse talking about the ban or not. We really liked our nurse for that class too, probably since we took it first, and the other classes seemed so so after that.

@FutureMrsMcK: I don't think they're all that bad. My mom says I loved mine. The problem is when the baby can get to a non-baby proofed environment. The problem is non-attentive parents, and that doesn't require a walker! Just my 2 cents!

@cascademom: You can find them bring illegally sold sometimes, but as @MUI831 says, technically you're supposed to call 311 to report them. The city ordinance banning them has been in effect since September 2011. I personally don't think they've been proven harmful enough to warrant superseding parental judgment, but that's just my two cents.

I'm also in Chicago and when we took the CPR class at Northwestern, the nurse talked about how they are also banned in the city. And if we ever saw them sold, we should call and report the store. I honestly can't remember where we were supposed to call. Regardless, DS has slept in a pack n play since we have a tiny place. We are moving to a house soon and I plan on putting up some sort of something.

Has anyone used the full coverage mesh liner? He likes to wedge himself into a corner. I feel like he'll have an issue when he's in an actual crib and not the pnp.

Bumpers have been good to us! We use the non-breathable ones. DS kept wedging his head onto the sides and corner of the crib, which would wake him up. Now if we took them off, I'm fairly certain he would start chewing on the slats. I also like being able to sneak into the room without him seeing me! Win!
