My new fave to make (as it has been a hit with who I have made it for) is BBQ Shepherds Pie!

Instead of gravy, put in fave BBQ sauce. I put them in foil pans and label and freeze in meal sizes. Cheap and easy to make, and super easy to throw in oven.

MIL brought us a bunch of freezer meals in disposable aluminum pans and they have been great! We can defrost and bake when we don't have anything else available. Lots of people have brought fresh stuff, but sometimes we have too much in the fridge at once so frozen is nice. I also like pantry essentials--chips, pop tarts, granola bars...anything like that is a nice treat when people bring it by. Fresh fruit, too!

@Mrs. Confetti: These things are a staple in our house (and we don't even have kids yet!). So easy! The most recent version was chipotle turkey :)

From a breastfeeding standpoint, anything with lots of calories and good nutrition (soups, stews, pasta etc), maybe lactation cookies and is it possible to pre-prepare smoothies? Spicy stuff isn't always an issue but I did find that anything too rich made baby a little cranky!

It might also be helpful to make some cookies or cake for visitors.

Anything single serving, that can be reheated easily, and preferably can be eaten with one hand. I do burritos of any kind - breakfast with sausage and eggs, or black bean and cheese. Single serving soups are great, or lasagna.

I would make empanadas/hand pies. Make any sort of filling you want (ground turkey, chicken, beef, veggie plus some sort of sauce-not too saucy, though), then cut refrigerated pie dough into fourths, and put 1-2 tbs of filling in each one, then fold over & seal w/ fork. Put into the freezer, and then when it is time to make them just pull out however many you wish to bake, and bake at 375 until golden brown (~20 minutes). Bonus: these can be eaten one-handed!

that is so sweet of you! in addition to freezer meals, one thing that i REALLY appreciated was people bringing over hot meals during the first 2 weeks, and while at it sometimes they would bring over tupperwares full of cut up fruit or veg. THAT was awesome :) healthy, fresh, and ready to eat! ;)

Soups are great, especially if there are potatoes or barley or something in it that makes it more filling. We froze a bunch of turkey barley soup and split pea soup. Also, instead of making meals in advance, it's sometimes really nice to have someone show up with freshly prepared food and to hold the baby for a minute while someone goes to the bathroom. :-)

I second the soups idea! Also, things they can eat fast and with one hand if needed. I've been scarfing down meals pretty fast lately, and sometimes we still need to eat in shifts because one of us has to hold baby!

How about making soup and freezing it? I remember soups were great because I was so thirsty as a result of breastfeeding! I love this soup:

My little sister is 37 weeks pregnant with her first. (I am bursting at the seams waiting for my nephew!) I'd like to make some meals in advance for after the baby comes. She and her husband are 22 and don't cook a lot but will try anything.

Any ideas? So far I've got lasagna and pulled pork. I heard to avoid anything spicy for breastfeeding.
