@Blueberry: there's something about cows milk before a year that messes with iron absorption I think? But cheese and yogurt are processed differently. Lots of people, myself and LO included., react to cows milk but not yogurt or cheese

@Blueberry: I think you're just not supposed to give them cow's milk in place of breast milk or formula. You can give them dairy products though as part of their diet.

@JoJoGirl: We are in the same place--and barely eating 3 meals a day. And they are not meals at all. Just single stuff, mostly, like you. I think it's fine. In fact, I decided it was turning me into a head case freaking out that she wasn't eating enough, so my new policy (as of this morning) is to not worry about it.

She does luuurve yogurt, though, and veggie soup. I think because it has a little salt? Which is too bad, because then I feel like I really have to limit it.

@JoJoGirl: Great post! I have an 8 month old also and I have the same concerns.

@looch: I hear/read about giving baby milk, yogurt, cheese, etc. But I thought you are not supposed to give a baby under 1 year cow's milk..am I incorrect? I have been very curious about giving baby yogurt and cheese :)

W do BLW and K has taken to it really well...sometimes I think too well. She'll eat anything and everything and I'm pretty sure that, if I let her, she'd eat until she threw up. So, I'm not sure she's the best comparison, but here's what she ate yesterday and today:

Breakfast:
1. Scrambled egg, strawberries, kiwi
2. Oatmeal with banana and blueberries, strawberries, avocado.

Lunch:
1. Chili, avocado, Brussels sprouts.
2. Roasted chicken breast, kiwi, avocado, watermelon, cottage cheese.

Dinner:
1. Pasta with sausage and peppers, avocado, kiwi, butternut squash, full-fat plain Greek yogurt with some fruit purée mixed in.
2. Breaded chicken breast, roasted sweet potatoes, roasted broccoli, avocado, full-fat plain Greek yogurt.

We also offer water in a straw cup with every meal and she tends to drink quite a bit of it.

ETA: She has ZERO teeth and this does not prove to be any sort of impediment to her ability to eat ALL. THE. FOOD. :silly:

Anna isn't real fond of baby food anymore. She instantly fusses the second she sees us with any kind of food.
She has had cheese, bread, yogurt, pudding, carrots, mac n cheese and a bunch of other stuff.
She loves sweet potato 'puffs' that I think Gerber makes and those Yogurt melts as well.
She's still learning the feeding herself thing though lol

@scg00387: We had her stool tested for blood after I ate a bunch of dairy last week and all 4 samples came back negative, so it's very possible she's outgrown it. She still gets some weird rashes on her face every couple of days though so I'm nervous she's still sensitive to it. I guess only way to find out is to try..

@JoJoGirl: my babe has front teeth but no molars. She doesn't really use her teeth for chewing. I cut things into bite sized pieces, and she moves them around her mouth and squishes them between her gums. I don't give her raw/hard veggies or anything like that.

@JoJoGirl: Has she tried any dairy after 6 months? my LO was very sensitive to it in my diet but grew out of it at 6 months, and could eat dairy himself.

At that age, we still did mostly simple foods and nibbles of our main dishes like you've said, and had just started 3 meals a day. Around 10 months he made it clear he needed an afternoon snack. Now at 13.5 months his meals are pretty much the same as mine, plus some added fruit/veggies

ETA- he has been a slow teeth-er and always shocks us at what he can eat. I typically find he has an easier time if I give him a 'slice' of something instead of cutting it up.

Huh okay so maybe I'm not so behind. A lot of "real" foods make me nervous because of her lack of teeth (ie pizza!). Although she did great with chicken. @Smurfette: Not yet, but only because I never eat/make pasta for us, so we literally never ever have it around!

At that age R was getting one thing per meal. Heck she still gets a banana for breakfast. Won't eat anything else. She loves her banana. We started at 9 months, giving her a variety at a time. Like avocado, turkey, and cheese for lunch. Dinner will be a meat and veggie. Or veggie and pasta. Have you tried pasta?

Here are a few examples:
Breakfast:
frozen waffle (we buy these whole grain/flax ones) and some strawberries
Yogurt mixed with berries
Cereal (puffed kamut) and banana

Lunch: usually leftovers, today we went to a friends house and she ate some chicken salad and zucchini slices

Dinner: whatever we are eating...last night she had curried sweet potato soup and a quinoa/broccoli/egg muffin thing. Tonight she will have fish, rice, and spinach. We gave her some BBQ chicken pizza (whole wheat crust) on Sunday.

I just cut everything into small pieces and let her do what she wants. Somedays she doesn't eat very much, other days she eats a ton!

Xander just eats purees, but here's what he often has:

Breakfast: cereal + fruit (ex. rice cereal w/ BM, 3.5 oz Mixed Fruit)
Lunch: cereal + veggie (ex. rice cereal w/ BM, 3.5 oz Carrots)
Dinner: meat + veggie + fruit (ex. 1.5 oz Chicken w/ 3.5 oz Mixed Veggies, 3.5 oz Banana/Apple/Pear mix)

ETA: I should mention that's what he eats now at 10 months. At 8 months he was still only eating 1 meal a day tops and it was just a fruit or veggie.

I constantly feel like I'm 2 months behind when it comes to solids. At 8 months, my LO is eating 3 "meals" a day, but they are still extremely simple. Yesterday she had banana for breakfast (literally almost an entire banana...), avocado for lunch, sweet potato for dinner. We are still doing simple fruits and veggies, either purees or BLW depending on the food.

LO was/is MSPI so I am nervous about introducing dairy in the way of yogurt or cheese.

She's had chicken before but I don't cook it enough at home to give it to her every day.

So what do/did meals look like for your LOs at that age? Am I supposed to be giving her more complex meals/food combos? I'm so lost!
