@shopaholic: I would just offer the food. If she won't eat it then give her a pouch. I find food still on the floor two days after she eats something, so I know it is frustrating to clean up after them. Let's just hope this phase is over quick!

@Smurfette: We were transitioning to mostly table foods in the past month. But the last week I've been back to purees because she just throws all the table food.

@littlebug: @littlebug: I was doing the quinoa in purees thing a while back. Looks like I have to go back to that again! Thanks!

@blackbird: LOL! Oh the screaming! That's lovely, isn't it? Are our kids opposites or what, when it comes to food preferences? K thinks beans, hummus, and meats are the grossest things. She'll turn into fruit soon - that's all she'll eat!

@petunia354: LOLOL! Ahh! I can commiserate! Guess I need to offer a utensil to play with, but she loves flicking things and dropping and throwing. And playing "fetch" is my kryptonite. I'd just as soon stop feeding, but she needs to eat.

@looch: Thanks! The ped wants me to log all her food and milk intake and it's so hard to get an estimate. I think 90% of the food ends up on the floor or on me these days.

@edelweiss: Yes. We were doing a lot more self-feeding and table foods up till last week. Now I have to go back to feeding her while she plays with table foods.

@Kemma: Yes, but we've dropped a couple of feedings. I have been looking into smoothie recipes. Guess I need to start offering her those too! Thanks for that tip!

From memory you're still bf'ing right? If so then you're LO will still be getting plenty of good stuff from your milk! Smoothies or soups in a straw cup can be a great way to get in the food or have you tried cutting up LO's food into fingers or wedges?

Don't stress too much Mama, some kids are just slower to get excited about solids and as long as you're giving her the opportunity to eat then that's all you can do sometimes!

My little guy was failure to thrive. One thing we did was feeding often but he wouldn't eat much at any time. For example he would get dinner at 4, then 6 with us and then again right before bed. He didn't refuse certain foods but he often would take one bite and say he was done.

One thing to check is how much milk, juice or water they are getting. It filled up his tummy so when we cut back, he are more.

is she feeding herself at all? if not, perhaps she might enjoy that more (even if it's a lot more messy)? LO would usually spit out meat until just recently--he's 14 months old. i have to cut it into really tiny bites because he can't/won't really chew them.

I try not to give too much choice or make it too much of a "thing" where we need a certain dish, utensil or whatever...makes it more work in th end when you only have one of the spoons!

I've let go of a lot of my son's food issues over the last 18 months (he's 3 now) but the main thing is to remember that it may pass, it may not. Keep a food log of what they're eating and reflect on it over a 24 hour period to make sure they're getting enough. Vitamins if they are old enough help close the gap too.

I don't have much advice, we are in the throwing food phase now which is my kryptonite, I lose my shit whenever he throws food on the floor. He was refusing food until I started giving him a spoon to play with and now he is all about trying to feed himself, scoop food himself, etc. I'm guessing that won't be the magic solution for you, but she might get so distracted with a utensil that you could slip a few bites in her mouth.

Good luck! I know it can be SO frustrating. Just hang in there. This too shall pass.

When L is having a bad eating day I'll just let her down to play and keep food with me. She'll come check in every couple minutes for a bite here and there (that's how I get her to eat steamed veggies anymore).
I worry that I'm creating a bad grazing habit, but I really want her to eat her veggies and not solely eat meat (the only thing she likes to eat!!!)

My kid's going through a screaming phase at the table. It's freaking ridiculous. She sits there and screeches on her highest setting and won't even touch puffs, which are Baby Crack, as far as I am concerned. I'm hoping it's just a phase. With the latest stomach bug, I am worried it'll take awhile for her to go back to solid food. I hope she's got a few more teeth working through and that's what's bothering her (she only has 2).

She'll eat proteins--chicken, cheese, fish, beans, but fruit and veg are out unless they're pureed. Which makes me think it's a texture thing? I mean, she even eats the "mixed vegetables" purees. The nasty looking green ones!

Not alone

@shopaholic: I think this is par for the course! Sadie is so picky. One day she loves something and the next it's the grossest thing she's ever seen. She loved spaghetti the first two times, but now, it will sit on her tray for an hour and she'll just stare at us like, "yeeeah, no... not happening." The pediatrician says this is all very normal. It's so frustrating though. I think she's going to turn into a PB&J. Like @Smurfette: I offer what we eat, but if she won't eat it (which she won't), I give her something she will, which is usually a pouch & cheese and crackers or a PB&J.

meal time is so frustrating. R is doing the same thing, one day she likes something and the next she doesn't. Lately too she doesn't seem to want to eat, but if I give her a spoon to hold, she will eat more. She tries to use the spoon but then ends up holding it and picking up the food herself. Last night it took her almost 40 mins to eat, which is about 20 mins longer then normal.

Are you doing all purees? Maybe try more table food and let her feed herself. Let her sit in the high chair for a couple hours and eat.

I just give R a pouch if she won't eat what I prepared for her. That way she gets something in her tummy. Or puffs, Girlfriend will always eat puffs.

DS is becoming increasingly picky. He'll drink a huge sippy of milk, but refuse food (not because he's full, because he's a stinker). Forget about eating whatever we eat. Last night he ate about two bites of pbj, we had pork, asparagus, and carrots and I ended up eating his. I gave him a pouch and that's what I've been depending on lately for his dinner. They say he eats all his food in his lunch at daycare, but I can't believe it!

Oh, mealtime can be so frustrating. Who knew it could be this hard, right? Sometimes, D will only eat if he can dip it in something - so he'll throw a fit if I give him a cut up meatball, but he'll happily eat it if he can dip it in marinara sauce. Sometimes he'll only eat it out of semething - the other night he completely lost his mind when I gave him some ravioli, and as I went to put it back in the container to put it back in the fridge, suddenly he was interested, so I put the container on his high chair tray and he ate the whole thing. Sometimes, he'll only eat if it's off the spoon. Kids are so weird.

When he went through a major protest period, we went back to purees - I made some bulked-up purees w/quinoa. So for a few weeks, he was getting quinoa/oatmeal purees, applesauce, yogurt, and cottage cheese for every meal cuz it was all he'd eat!

I don't really have a lot of advice, because Xander's a pretty good eater, but sometimes he'll get super fussy while eating and refuse to eat anythign or just spit it out if I can even get it into his mouth. Sometimes what works will be giving him a toy to play with and then while he's distracted, I sneak food in. Other times, what I have to do is let him go play for a few minutes, then have him take a break and eat for a couple minutes, then back to play, and just keep doing that over and over again until he's done eating.

Good luck to you! I hope you're able to figure out something that works for both you and K! <3

@shopaholic: First, you need a few splat mats and a big ole cocktail. Toddler meals are tough! Just keep trying . . . some nights, all my toddler will eat is a slice of cheese, a handful of yogurt melts, one bite of chicken, and a swig of milk. I have put on shows she likes to keep her entertained, I let her play with spoons and forks (and anything else she is interested in) . . . if she is engaged, she eats better. ETA: I even let her *fingerpaint* on her tray with purees . . . whatever she seems to be into!

:( mealtime battles are the worst. I've had some luck with bringing like ten different utensils to the table... different colors/sizes/shapes of forks, spoons, knives (they love to cut!), and chopsticks. kiddie and adult... sometimes just spearing a piece of food with an adult chopsticks is what it takes!

And my last resort is distraction! letting them watch a video or play with a toy while I pop bites into their mouths.

I'm having an increasingly hard time feeding LO (12 months). She's always been a slooowww eater and not a fan of any proteins (meats, cheeses, eggs). I've had success making pieces really small and mixing them with other stuff. But now, she is even spitting out ground meat (ground on the finest setting). And she is also refusing things she loved before! I would chalk it up to picky eating, BUT most of the time she won't even let anything get in her mouth before she has swatted my hand away or thrown it on the floor!

Sometimes she will eat a new item or something she likes (3-4 bites) and then stop. She'll purse her lips together really tight and/or swat and block my hands from feeding her.

The ped is already concerned that her weight percentile keeps dropping and told me to keep feeding her, even if it does take 2 hrs at a time. It could be teething, but what to do if that is the case? Just not feed her?

I keep buying more and more foods to try and if she likes something one meal - I think I've found something - maybe next meal or tomorrow she doesn't want it anymore. Even her favorite tried and true foods aren't working anymore.

My fridge is getting over-packed. My floors and clothes are covered with food every feeding. What to do?
