@Mrsdaredevil: it was a very noticeable POP! I could not have missed it. Like a rubber band snapped inside of me, but not painful at all. I froze, wondering if it was what I thought it was, stood up, and felt the warm gush. It was pretty cool, and I was so relieved it didn't happen at work.

that being said, what's it feel like when your water breaks? can you tell when it's happening or do you not feel it until you stand up/walk?

Hm... I am not taking any precautions. My OB told me that only 1/10 women actually have their water break.
My mom had 5 kids and her water never broke... I am assuming mine won't either.

I didn't put anything down in bed and of course it did break there! Ha. But I sprung up before I really made a mess, though I did leave a trail to the bathroom. And yes, it was a gush. And it kept on going! In the car, I used a towel and a waterproof pad that we planned to use for Baby Y's diaper changes on the pack n play.

We have a waterproof mattress pad on the bed; our cr has leather seats, so I wasn't worried about that.

With DD, my water broke in the car, driving back to the office after picking up lunch for a meeting. It was just a trickle, though, so the pad I was wearing pretty much caught it all.

We have a mattress protector that we needed for the warranty - not sure how waterproof it is. Maybe I'll pour some water on it to test it out!
I'm planning to wear maxi pads starting right before my due date, just in case.
And I need to get a couple towels (and a garbage bag) into the cars . . .just in case.
So much to consider!

Mine was just a trickle and a pad was sufficient. It wasn't until 6 hours later when I was sitting up waiting for my epidural that it gushed. And holy cow it just kept coming and coming. I am so lucky it didn't happen at home!

We have this waterproof mattress pad: http://www.amazon.com/Protect-Waterproof-Mattress-Protector-California/dp/B000M9O9B0/ref=sr_1_35?ie=UTF8&qid=1335298701&sr=8-35 I highly suggest it to everyone. We have two so if one needs to be washed, we can use the other. If we don't protect our mattress, our warranty is void, so it's a must-have!

@artbee: From my experience it IS a gush! Maybe others disagree.

Another good tip is cover the passenger seat in your car with a garbage bag and then 2 highly absorbant towels for the ride in to the hospital. No need for an amniotic fluid mess in the car!

I slept and drove (new car) on a big towel just in case.

It broke (pop!) while I was sitting on the couch, and didn't gush until I stood up and ran to the bathroom. Luckily it just soaked my yoga pants. I got up and ran to the bathroom with an "oh, s#%&", my husband thought I had to throw up. I wore mega pads afterwards and soaked through 7 of them before we made it to the hospital an hour later.

We have a mattress pad at home so that is covered. A friend at work used puppy pads on her chairs and in her car so I might do that too when it gets closer.

I didn't do anything. They say that it's so rare for your water to break, and it's really not a big gush, just a sprinkle, so I didn't worry about it.

It wasn't a huge gush for me, and I was wearing a pad pretty much all the time then anyways (like, in case I sneezed). I was lying down and felt a little gush so got up and went to the bathroom (which is only like three steps away). Didn't get on the sheets at all.

I bought a waterproof mattress pad to put on the bed. It's a thin, non-rubber one (just like a treated terry cloth or something). I kept the other padded mattress pad under it for an extra layer just in case.

So far, water hasn't broken, so unsure if it will work or not!

Did you put special padding on your bed in case your water broke while in bed? The thought of this happening on our bed really grosses me out!

Also, did you wear depends or another feminine product towards the end of pregnancy just in case?
