My DD2 measured ahead or on track my entire pregnancy until around 35 weeks and she started dropping behind. She weighed only albs even when she was born at 38.5w, so maybe she just switched positions as I got towards the end and they were able to measure her more accurately. She was just a tiny baby. But she's more than made up for it now:) You could just be cooking a small one:)

I had an u/s at 37 weeks for something else and they said baby was about 7lbs. DS was born at 38+1 and was 9lbs 5oz. I don't think measurements are that accurate.

I agree with others that if your doctor was really concerned you would have been checked out right away.

@cfmartin: @turquoisemama: my midwife told me the same thing, that two either way was fine, but then she said they track the measurements and it has to be consistently behind or consistently ahead so that they know you are just growing at a smaller or larger rate. However, as other people have said, it is a fairly inaccurate way to measure baby's growth and that is what another midwife told me, that each person's measurements could be off if different people do it. It's just kind of their best way to sort of keep an eye on baby growth and your fluid level without doing an ultrasound.

If it was a big deal they would have done one for you sooner! It seems to be a pretty common issue! Side with your calming hubby.

I measured small with both of my pregnancies. I was sent for growth ultrasounds right away both times as a result. Everything was fine. I have a long torso and my babies liked to stretch out (or so they said) so I didn't get a big belly. I understand that it is hard not to worry. Hugs!

I measured over 2 weeks behind toward the end of my first pregnancy and had a follow up ultrasound which showed the baby was very small. I had several ultrasounds and biophysical profiles in the last few weeks and he always looked good, just small. I was induced at 39 weeks because at that point the midwife said the risks of giving birth were much lower than staying pregnant because he could be growing slowly due to placenta issues. He was born at 5lbs 12 oz. and perfectly healthy. Nothing was wrong with the placenta and he is still tiny for his age at almost 3 years old (just made it on the growth chart, finally!). Good luck and try not to stress out too much!

All babies grow differently. I was seen regularly due to GD and baby's low weight. Ultrasounds only give an estimate and can be off by quite a bit in either direction. Both my babies came out on the smaller side, but they're healthy and had no weight issues once born. They've always hovered around 5 - 10 percentile in weight and have followed their own curves.

My best friend had a similar experience and until birth they kept bringing it up and re measuring her. She ended up delivering a perfectly healthy and not even that small girl a week or two early! I think those measurements can be really hard to go off of 100%. And I also think from personal experience that they grow in spurts!

I feel like my belly grows in spurts, and on top of that there seems to be such a huge spectrum of normal for pregnant bellies. Hopefully its nothing! I agree with those who said if they were really concerned they'd have gotten you in right away! My OB said I'm "small" but didn't get more specific than that and I'm not even sure that has anything to do with my measurements or her opinion but I'm not thinking anything of it!

I wouldn't worry about it. I just had an appointment at 32 weeks and OB said my belly was measuring slightly behind, so he'd do a scan at my next appointment. But he specifically said he doesn't think baby is actually behind/small, he just uses it as an excuse to get a late ultrasound covered by insurance so he can check placenta and positioning and such. So I'm not worried. People are still saying I don't look pregnant, which I hate, but I know they aren't being mean, I'm just tall and carrying close with my first. So no cute round belly for me. at least not much if one. But life goes on.

I was also measuring small for several weeks, like 28-34 ish. 2-3 weeks behind. I had a growth ultrasound and baby was fine, around 60th percentile. I am tall and have a long torso and I'm carrying him really low. My OB told me the belly measurement is pretty "unscientific" and it's really just a screening - most of the time does not indicate a problem. She was not really worried, she said she thought it was just based on his position.

So, good to get it checked out with an u/s but I think generally it's nothing to worry about!

I started measuring small at the same time based on ultrasound measurements and it turned out baby was iugr. So i had a ton of testing all through the 3rd tri, but baby was just fine. She's still small but smart, sassy and ahead on all her development. ;) so try not to stress, and if nothing else, it's another opportunity to see baby on camera!!

I've been measuring small (1-2 weeks behind) based on belly measurements, but growth ultrasounds have him in the 50-75th percentile! Some people just carry differently and baby's position definitely has something to do with it as well. Try not to worry!

Hey! The exact same thing happened to me--from about 30/32 weeks on, my belly was measuring small. It totally freaked me out when my midwife sent me for a growth ultrasound at 36 weeks. Turns out, my daughter's head was just down way low (she was stretched out in there!), and she was measuring right on target. She was born at 39+6, at 7lb 13oz! :)

ETA: Ditto to what others have said about the "you look so tiny!" comments. After having a miscarriage and then a very healthy pregnancy (in which my belly really didn't get huge until late third trimester), I've decided the only appropriate thing to say to a pregnant lady is: "You look great!" Everything else can make her worry!

I measured small from around 32 weeks on. I was having fairly regular ultrasounds at the end but was told that I was possibly measuring small due to my long torso. My son was born at 38 weeks and was 6 lbs. 3 oz. and 100% healthy. He was a bit on the small side but he did arrive at 38 weeks so it's hard to say how big he would have been if he had made it to 40. Anyways, the point is that it is probably nothing to worry about. Some mothers carry the pregnancies differently (I also took forever to start to show). If your doctor isn't worried, I wouldn't be either.

Oh, and I used to get the comments all the time about how I really didn't look that pregnant. I know it was intended as a compliment but it definitely made me self-conscious that I wasn't big enough (and that something was wrong). Try to ignore it and take it in stride.

I know it's hard not to freak out, but your husband is right. If it was something they were really concerned about, they would have gotten you in right away. If you are still gaining well, I would take that as a positive sign. Think of all the ways that baby can lay in there, there's going to be a difference in the way you measure if she's sticking her bum up, or to the side. Also, do you have a longer torso? Taller mom's can tend to measure smaller since baby has more room to stretch out on the inside.

Hi! I'm currently 34 weeks along and at my ob appointment this week, my doctor said my measurement trend over the last 4 weeks has been behind. She said I was currently only measuring around 32 weeks. She said the measurements are not the most accurate and said it is usually due to position, etc. She made it seem like it wasn't a big deal based on my continued weight gain and the baby's strong movement. However, she suggested I come in next week for an ultrasound to get a more accurate measurement. My husband, trying to calm me down, said if it was a big deal, she would have done the ultrasound this week.

To top it off--a lady at work said to me yesterday, "you don't look like you have gotten much bigger over the last couple of weeks."

I guess I'm just a bit nervous about it. Any advice or experiences would be helpful. thanks!
