@leelee: don't know if it's coincidence or what. But I kept pushing the letdown button at my second session. Got 6oz!that's the most I've ever gotten. Ever. I hope this continues. :)

@regberadaisy: @Mrs. Jump Rope: yes I EP because my letdown was so fast DD would choke every time. I have an oversupply which is nice because I now have enough frozen to last her till she's 1(she's almost 6 months now) BUT weaning has been a horrible. I've pretty much been engorged for 2 weeks straight with no end in sight. :(

another tip is to drink a lot of Gatorade. Someone told me this as well and I definitely noticed a huge difference the day after I drink a lot of Gatorade, it has something to do with the electrolytes. Goodluck ladies!!!

I use the letdown button first and once I have letdown I push the button to go slower. I never go back to the letdown mode.

I just let it pump until it starts to slow a bit and I start doing compressions. After I can't really get any more out I just let it run until about the 20min mark and then I readjust my nipples in the flange to get a "new" sensation and that usually causes my other letdowns.

It's like after a while I don't feel as good of suction or my nipples feel numb to it so changing their positioning brings enough stimulation for 2nd letdown. I also turn up the suction a little bit at this time. Once that letdown starts to slow I also do compressions. I need a 2nd letdown to get mine empty! I have to pump for up to 30 min BTW. I let it run at least a few minutes after milk stops to encourage mine to keep up production.

To me the letdown mode feels shallower and not enough strength as the regular mode so I don't get 2nd letdowns from going back to the letdown mode.

@leelee: holy crap! Did you EP? 23oz per session? I'm in awe!
I would love to pump 6oz total so I could get a mani without having to worry about timing everything!

@littlejoy: omg i wish i knew the ameda trick earlier. I am in the process of weaning right now but i'll have to make a note of that for next time!

In regards to the letdown button, I was told to press it every 3-4 minutes to get multiple letdowns and empty faster. At my max I was pumping about 23oz a session. I massaged and used a handsfree bra as well.

I use the let down button until I feel the letdown come. I usually only get 2-3 oz MAX out of each boob (I only pump one side at a time). But, like @Mrs. Jump Rope: said, distraction works best for me.

@littlejoy: Thanks for the tips! I have an 8 month old and when I nurse him he is satisfied, but when I pump (which I have to do bc I"m a WOHM) I get 2 oz! SO FRUSTRATING to pump three times a day for ONE bottle.

I ordered the duckbill parts but until then, I"m also going to change my membranes bc it has been a loooong time, so maybe that will help too. Fingers crossed. Thanks again :)

@regberadaisy: Yep. The whole yellow piece comes off and the duck bill piece fits onto the flange. Mamas in my low supply group have had much success with these, and they got me through my last 3 months of pumping.

I just realized that I have two different flange sizes! I have a set from the hospital that are 27mm and the set that came with the pump (24 mm). I'm not sure that I've really noticed a difference in them and output.

@T-Mom: @winniebee: I'm pretty positive I have the right flange size now. The 2 standard ones that came with the pump were too big for me. I ordered one size down and it seems to fit a lot better.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: Usually double pumping is better because it boosts prolactin. I couldn't EVER do it when trying to use a bra. When I awkwardly held both with my hands, it seemed to work. :(

@regberadaisy: I don't have the best pumping output. Sometimes I surprise myself and get 6oz! But usually, I only get 2.

The few times I've gotten 6oz, here's what I've done:
- massage, massage, massage!
- I do hit te letdown button for a harder suction
- distraction. If I am super focused and fixated on the lack of milk, I tend to not get any! Playing on my phone or wTching something on tv helps.
- I wish I could, but I can't double pump. I wanted to, I tried, I even got the double pump hands free bra everyone raves about. I get zip zero zilch when I double pump.

Massage is the #1 thing that works for me though! Distraction is #2.

I didn't know how to use my pump in the beginning, but once I started noticing my letdowns, I figured it out. So, I start with the rapid suction, and once I feel the letdown (or see the milk is coming out in a greater volume), I hit the button. I let it go until the milk slows, then hit it again to bring back the faster suction. I have very low supply though, so another full supply mom might be able to answer.

Have you changed your pump membranes lately? They should be changed every 6 weeks or so to ensure good suction. I also found that the Ameda duck bill ones worked so much better. They do fit on the Medela flanges (you use them instead of the whole yellow piece).
