I've gotten both from insurance and I like the PISA significantly better but I do like the flanges from the Ameda so I use those with my medela

I got the Medela PISA from insurance and my SIL gave me her Ameda. I recently just used the Ameda b/c I was sick of bringing the PISA to/from work. I don't know if it's a fluke or if I'm crazy... The Ameda seem to get out the same output in half the time of the PISA.

I'm gonna switch to using the Ameda next week exclusively just to see what the difference is! I have to say tho the Ameda wasn't very comfortable... The speed seems lower than Medela no matter how high I turn it up, but the suction seems kinda uncomfortable.

I had the option of either through insurance and went with Ameda because I wanted the closed system - there is a piece which blocks any airflow between the bottle and the tubing, so there is zero chance of moisture buildup in the tubing getting sucked into the motor and then leading to mold. I also used both a hospital grade Ameda and Medela when my daughter was born which gave me a little bit of a feel for the Medela system. I like the little white valves on the Ameda better than the white flaps on the Medela as the flaps seem hard to clean without tearing. It does seem that some people think they get better output from Medela though (I had tons of milk with my Ameda so this was not an issue for me).

I really like ameda for the sole fact that they're closed system. Medela pumps can allow for milk to be sucked into the tubes and motor, which is impossible to sterilise. No thank you!

@jetsa: It really sucks that the insurance pumps from Ameda seem to be lower quality than what you would get if you paid OOP. If we end up having another baby in the time frame I desire, I'll have to buy my pump OOP and I'm leaning toward a Hygeia.

Sorry to threadjack OP!

@MrsBucky: yes, I think the insurance ameda's are not as good. I got an ameda though insurance and could never get very much. I got a medela as a hand-me-down and used it for 10 months of pumping at work. I actually ended up buying another medela PIS because I liked it so much. I trashed the ameda.

@avivoca: Thanks! At this point I'm leaning towards the Medela- it sounds like most people who prefer the Ameda got in independently before they were covered and the quality has gone down with the version you get through insurance. @Radish: Is the Ameda you like one you bought on your own or one you got through insurance? It seems like maybe there is a difference?

I had two Amedas, one was used and one was new from insurance. The quality of my older Ameda was much better than the one I got from insurance. The newer one actually quit working well after eight months of use and I switched to using my older one exclusively. When that one broke (it was several years old at this point), I got a hospital grade Ameda for a month before going back to my new pump (I was pump weaning so supply wasn't a huge deal).

In short, I liked my old Ameda, but with the bad quality that I and several other bees have had with the newer ones, I'd recommend going with Medela.

Last time I got a an Ameda and I loved it. This time I only had the choice of a Medela and while I haven't used it yet, I think that I like the Ameda system better. Honestly, I think they are completely comparable. Most people have a preference for the Medela.

I called my insurance today and these are the two options that are fully covered. If you could choose either of these options at no cost, which would you choose and why? I will be on leave for the first 6 months and then returning to work (and hopefully continuing to pump at work until a year). I've watched a few comparison videos and am totally lost!
