@macintosh: flange size really depends on nipple size, which can vary within one cup size! A lactation consultant can definitely help you, and mine gave me the size I needed for free!

I don't know if by "bustier" you mean a hands free pump bra, but I HIGHLY recommend one!! And I concur that at least one extra set of all the pump parts is nice to have!

@magnolia: Ah, I'm a B cup also. I'm hoping that the hospital lactation consultant can give me a recommendation.

@Mrs Green Grass: Good to know, extra membranes and valves.

@Cole: Do you need a special bottle brush or will a regular one do? Is there a special dishwasher basket too?

@catomd00, @T.H.O.U., @Mrs Green Grass: Ok, no sterilizing bags. One less thing to buy!

@magnolia: I wondered about flange size. Can you tell by just holding it up to the breast, or do you find out when you're not getting the right suction during pumping? I may skip the storage bags, too.

@shellio: Great idea. I know my hospital has pumps but I'm not sure what kind. I'm going to a breastfeeding class at the hospital, so I can ask.

@Mrs.Someone: thanks!

Extra bottles, Nuk storage bags (Lansinoh leak), membranes, valves. No need to sterilize IMO.

Just want to add: I think most hospitals use Medela pumps but there is always a chance that yours will not. Hopefully they do and you'll get an extra set.

I had a couple of extra sets of all the pumping stuff and rotated through them, that way I didn't have to wash everything each day. A couple things I wish I'd known:
-When you are at the hospital (if you're delivering in a hospital), ask the nurses to bring in the pump and send in the lactation consultant. They will show you how to use it and give you tips, and also you'll get an extra set of parts. Don't need to bring your pump to the hospital. (I brought mine, oops.)
-You can refrigerate the parts between uses, sources vary on how long but I usually did 24 hours or so - for example, I would use a new set in the morning, put it in the fridge, and pull the same set out every time I pumped until the next morning.

I also agree with having an extra set of membranes around.

I had to order smaller flange to fit my breast. I don't like the storage bags personally. You can't reuse them.. I use the bottles to store instead. If you're working from home and don't need a huge stash I think bottles are enough

I used the sterilizing bags at the beginning and then quit. I just hand washed usually. You'll need a smaller brush too to get in smaller spaces.

I'd skip the sterilizing bags. If you need to sterilize a pot of water on the stove works fine.

Id skip the sterilizing bags, personally. I had 4 sets of flanges/valves/membranes (one for each day I worked). I used gerber first essential bottles because they are cheap, it the pump and that what DD took for bottles.

The only other thing I can think of is a bottle brush and a basket for your dishwasher if you don't already have them. And ditto to the membranes.

ETA: and think about how you want to store the bags on your freezer, there are some systems that might help or you can get a gift bag and cut a slot out of the bottom so you're always using the oldest milk in you stash.

Eventually you'll need extra membranes...they wear out. I'd also want at least another full set of parts (minus tubes), I had several sets so I wasn't washing all day long.

Looking for some advice from experienced pumpers. I'm getting a Medela PISA through insurance, but only the pump and 2 bottles are included. What accessories would you consider must-have? I work primarily from home so I'm not planning to get a bag for it, at least not right away. Here's what I'm planning to get:

Extra bottles
Storage bags
Sterilizing bags
Bustier
Lanolin (already have)
