@Skadi: I had them with baby 1 but the hard ones with baby 2. I don't think they were significantly better. They were not that mold able that they really massaged much. But if they were just $20 and you were going to but new ones anyways I would say get them because they were a bit more comfortable.

I had them. They helped some at first, but the more postpartum I became and as my breasts changed shaped I ended up needing smaller flanges (the smallest they sell, which are not really sold in stores so I had to order from Medela).

This was a few years ago, so I do not know if they still do it this way, but if you call Medela and explain to them your problem they will help you trouble shoot, and if you end up needing larger/smaller flanges they used to send you out a set for free!

I don't know about the soft ones, but on the advice of a lactation consultant at the hospital I bought third-party flanges called pumpin' pals. They had a different shape that worked better for me and were more comfortable.

we have/had a freestyle that came with the soft flanges -- I ended up not using them much because they were the wrong size for me, so I sized up in the hard plastic style.

I remember thinking they were fine, no problems, but I didn't feel they were much different than the regular ones, either. :)

I don't think there is much of a difference in terms of suction, or the silicone actually helping the suction. they were slightly softer against the breast, I think.

From what I understand, Medela used to include soft flanges with their Freestyle pump that were made of silicone. They're discontinued now, but you can get them online for around $20.

Some of the reviews I'm reading say that they are better than the hard plastic flanges because with every pump, the silicone squeezes the breast, so it's not stimulating just the nipple like with the hard shells. Have any of you tried them?
