I wish the reporters wouldn't have gotten so close to the police line today... I felt like a lot police resources were spent continuously trying to keep reporters at a safe distance.

@MrsSCB: ditto everyone wanting to get it right. I have held the presses on more than one occasion (a very expensive thing) as things were triple-checked. This public perception of journalists as blood-thirsty, sensational, heartless people always makes me sad. I've never encountered anyone like that, regardless of media type.

@bluestriped bee: we had to have our late edition in around 1 am ... But sometimes we'd hold for really significant news. Not often, though!

@bluestriped bee: you're welcome! Another interesting thing is that a lot of networks (or at least mine, and I assume others) will input code so no ads play before particularly sensitive videos, such as a lot of the Boston and Texas ones this week. You make less money but it feels more appropriate.

@MrsSCB: Thank you for posting. I always wonder about people in the media industry. Very insightful to know the world of broadcast news. I think for newspapers to be able to be printed in time, don't they have to have articles edited and ready by like 4am or earlier. Crazy, you guys probably don't sleep... especially when tragedies strike like the Boston Marathon bombing.

@Mrs. Yoyo: thank you, totally agree with you.

I work in broadcast news and I've been seeing a lot of statements like this over the past week. I understand the frustration, but at the same time, if there weren't such an immense appetite for news, we wouldn't have so much pressure to get information out quickly. With social media, rumors would be flying no matter what. If we didn't report things we would (and do) get flack for being silent. It's basically a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation.

Also, being on the back end of things, I can tell you that everyone truly does want to get the info right. People agonize over what to say and when. And to be perfectly honest, while I do understand the frustration, it hurts a little to read such harsh criticism (not just here, I'm talking about generally) when I know my coworkers are working tirelessly, around the clock, getting essentially no sleep, trying to get out the news that people crave in breaking situations like this. Anyway, that's the end of this novel -- just wanted to give some perspective from the other side of things :-)

@Mrs. Yoyo: I agree, it's throwing shit against a wall and hoping something sticks. The media is criticized if they don't, and if something sticks they're winning the viewers/making money. Meanwhile the viewers are eating everything up and demanding more and not looking critically about whether or not something has been verified and then criticizing them if it's false.

I think it's the media's responsibility to only report/publish verified facts, but I can understand why they don't...they're responding to our demands for instant news gratification. I think it's become a dangerous cycle, but one for which both parties are responsible.

I also think it's super important that we are media consumers look very critically at every piece of information that comes through. Has it been verified? Was it a rumor or something pulled off of an internet forum?

(http://www.salon.com/2013/04/19/the_internets_shameful_false_id/ , http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/04/19/reddit-sunil-tripathi-apologize_n_3117051.html )

Unfortunately, the world we live in is very fast-paced and we're accustomed to being able to find out anything at any time, day or not, and we expect our news to cater to that, and a lot of people won't look at it critically, will accept and spread any piece of shit that's thrown at them (particularly if it's from a source like CNN) and then eviscerate them if it turns out to be false. Bad cycle.

My two cents.

@MsInformation: I agree with you. Part of my rant is directed to out of Boston area media sources. The Globe & Mail for example, front paged a photo from the Boston Marathon that I've seen with at least 3 different stories attached to it. Did they do their due diligence the best they could? Maybe. They may have thought it was the right source but maybe that source wasn't properly informed so the misinformation is now travelling world wide.

@Mrs. Yoyo: Like! I agree with you.

I, also, raise my hand and say that I like gossip. If there is no info out there, I'll look for it. I completely agree that it's all speculation and some of it is true and some of it is false. I like to have info.

Also, even police officers or other supposedly 'credible' sources can make mistakes so once they relay that info to the media... the media sends it out. Then, oops, they are wrong. Who usually gets blamed... the media for not checking enough. (I'm not sure who to blame. I definitely respect law enforcement.) Yeah, some of it is the media but I think some of it is human error. It's not anything we can prevent or blame.

BTW, I'm not in the media business whatsoever.

@MsInformation: I agree, people should only read the credible sources. Unfortunately, so many people will believe ANYTHING that is put out there. (ie, the national enquirer). These people are the target audience.

An example I heard was Kathie Lee Gifford ( not a news reporter but a highly influential individual) spoke about the Connecticut shooting and the weapons that were used. She said it was an assault rifle that was capable and intended on bringing down large game animals. This is wrong. It was a .22. It would barely bring down a coyote. This is a prime example of if you don't know about the subject, DO NOT comment on it.

I totally agree that a lot of the broadcast media are too quick to jump the gun ... but it's a bit of a double-edged sword. They get crucified for waiting if everyone else has something and they're actually doing their due diligence, and they get crucified for going with something and then having to correct themselves.

This is coming from a former print journalist, mind you. No one buys newspapers anymore because it's "old news," and yet we actually had the luxury of time and getting the story right.

So, pick your poison, I guess.

As a reporter at a major metropolitan daily newspaper (not in Boston), I'm a member of the mainstream media and I understand the frustrations over sensational coverage and propagating bad information. But ranting about THE MEDIA like it's a single hive mind is not particularly helpful. I would say that in Boston coverage, outlets such as CNN and the New York Post have done a sub-par job, while others - in particular the Boston Globe, laboring under incredible duress - have done good, careful work.

We're all intelligent, critical thinkers here (that's why I like these boards compared with other Internet forums). So I'd really urge you to distinguish between sources of information; reward the ones you trust with your readership/subscription dollars and turn off/don't click on the irresponsible ones.

There's going to be a lot of handwringing and navel-gazing in the media after the dust settles on this, and that's a conversation that needs to happen. But probably not right now.

Also, re: non-MSM, online sources of information, there have been issues too (Reddit's false IDs of suspects, people on Twitter repeating police scanner traffic, etc.).

Yeah I agree. One one hand, I get it-- they can't exactly switch over to regularly scheduled Maury Povich or whatever, because that would just seem really wrong, but at the same time, they *shouldn't* report rumors or anything that isn't checked OR report anything that could compromise police safety or the investigation, like specific locations, and yet they have to fill all this time. So I appreciate that they are all in a tough spot, but a lot of them just aren't handling it well.

They are showing his Aunt on the news up here (she lives in/near Toronto) and she is just ranting. What she is saying is a little nutty to me, and they're just letting it go on, and on! She doesn't actually know anything (just blabbering opinion I think), totally does not add to any of the story, and it's sort of embarrassing.

I really hope this all ends soon (however it's going to end) and the focus can be brought back to the families mourning the loss of their loved ones (both in Boston, and Texas) rather than useless spinoff stories, theories, etc.

It'd be ideal if people use events like this to punish inaccuracies through the free market... by no longer watching or reading outlets that put forth speculation or inaccuracies! Media outlets definitely pay attention to their viewership/subscriber numbers!

What happened to good reporting? They are doing a disservice to their company and slandering their own reputation by putting a bunch of BS stories out there. People can be patient if what they get in the end is THE TRUTH.
