Well, i had severe facial, neck, and jaw pain a few years ago. I saw doctors and dentists, orthodontists and oral specialists. I had an arthrocentesis--where they clear the crap out of your jaw. They put me on a liquid diet. They put me on a long term anti-inflammatory for the soft tissue that was always sore. It got worse and worse. I had TMJ before and i could feel it when I touched my jaw bone, but this seemed to radiate all up through my face and neck. But I still thought it was TMJ.

I went to a dentist who specializes in TMJ and he sent me to a chiropractor. Took some X-rays. Turns out i had a "triple harmonic" in my neck. Three curves instead of one. And it was not at the proper angle. My neck looked like a game of Jenga blocks, no kidding! He'd only seen one in a pro football player before me. Nearly two years later, my neck pain is like, a 1, maybe 2 out of a 10, and it gets aggravated when I sit at my desk too long or sit in a pronated position. Before, I was taking vicodin to sleep and it was always bothering me. It took a long time to fix. But it's obvious it was the only solution.

@Mrs. Jacks: Precordial catch syndrome! My sister and I both have experienced this at times but didn't know what it was; I have always wondered if I'm gonna randomly die of a blood clot in my lung or something. I had a similar pain last night when laying down on my right side only but am thinking maybe it was a muscle or something because it didn't get worse when inhaling...anyway, I am so glad you mentioned it! Big mystery solved.

@Mrs. Jacks: Thanks for the lead!! Definitely looks similar to my symptoms. The only thing that doesn't add up is that the attacks have become more frequent as I get older, not less frequent. I remember having them maybe once or twice a year when I was young... but now if there's a stressful time I get them multiple times a week. The time when I had the episode that sent me to the ER and lasted more than 3 days was when I was planning my wedding.

The ER is the wrong place to go for unexplained medical issues. They excel at stabilizing very sick patients. Better to wait for the referral to the doc who specializes in her issues.

Never mind :) sounds like you are on your way to the answer!

Well, we're in a holding pattern now. He has a steroid pack and vicodin to take. He had to take 8 pills wih dinner tonight! The CT found no skeletal problems but swelling of the soft tissue. So, let's just hope these steroids help. He's sleeping right now. I'm so happy he is finally able to sleep!!

When I was in my first couple years of college, I was unable to keep most food down for days sometimes weeks on end. I would try and eat and it would come up almost immediately. We did several tests but nothing ever turned up. We later found out it was caused by stress and it still happens occasionally but no where near the way it was back then. It was frustrating that we could do so many test and all they could tell me "is my food took longer to digest then most people's."

I randomly have nausea for no apparent reason. Hubby was all worried and made me get a catscan, MRI, etc. no reason found. He's just glad it's not cancer or something.

I'd definitely see a neurologist or neurosurgeon.

@mediagirl, its no fun when you hurt and dont know why! I was prescribed gabapentin (i think i spelled that right) but the new version of the drug is lyrica. Its generally prescribed for fibromyalgia, but can be used to treat generalized nerve pain (so if its related to the nerve, he may get some relief...i know i did!)

Ill be praying that they figure it out, or that he at least gets some relief!

Back in college, I had a awful pain in my back and chest - I thought it was a heart attack and went to the ER. The doctor diagnosed me with a "skeletal tremor".

It happened again right after going to a friend's graduation party out of town. The party started late and I was stuck in traffic and didn't eat for hours. Same thing that happened last time, we went to an amusement park out of town, decided to come home that night and hadn't eaten in hours.

I went to the ER again and this time was diagnosed with heart burn! The doctor was in shock about my previous diagnosis and even confronted the other doctor.

I hope they figure out what's wrong and it turns out to be not so serious!

@earinej: yup. I've talked to a few friends and relatives who are in the medical field and all of them mentioned that. I'm hoping if it is that it can be treated with medicine.

@stiffaknee: isn't it amazing that you can have this awful pain and no one can figure out why? Ugh. Sorry to hear that!

@mrs. wagon: wow! That's frightening to have pain near your heart, no matter how infrequently. Sorry to hear it's not treatable but I would be so thankful for that teaching hospital! You never know what another set of eyes will tell you.

@mediagirl: If after seeing some specialist, they still can't figure out what's wrong, try seeing if you have a chiropratic neurologist in your area. They are not a regular chiropractor - they specialize in just the upper spine, neck, jaw and head issues. They generally specialize in migraine treatment, but the ones my husband and I saw helped with severe tension headaches and TMJ - so they do also deal with other head area pain. Might be worth a shot if the other doctor's can't determine his issue. Good luck!

These are the symptoms of Trigeminal Neuralgia, from the Mayo Clinic. Do these sound like him?

-Occasional twinges of mild pain
-Episodes of severe, shooting or jabbing pain that may feel like an electric shock
-Spontaneous attacks of pain or attacks triggered by things such as touching the face, chewing, speaking and brushing teeth
-Bouts of pain lasting from a few seconds to several seconds
-Episodes of several attacks lasting days, weeks, months or longer —some people have periods when they experience no pain
-Pain in areas supplied by the trigeminal nerve (nerve branches), including the cheek, jaw, teeth, gums, lips, or less often the eye and forehead
-Pain affecting one side of your face at a time
-Pain focused in one spot or spread in a wider pattern
-Attacks becoming more frequent and intense over time

@pastemoo: you should definitely look it up, it's also called pleurodynia. Now that I know what it is it makes me feel better when it hits... it's definitely stress related and the pain literally takes my breath away sometimes. But at least I know it's relatively harmless and it'll go away with rest. Now I just go "ow, devil's grippe, devil's grippe".

I have this shooting pain that starts at the bridge of my nose and shoots across my face toward my ear...ive been to two specialists and they have no idea whats going on, so the neurologist just calls it "atypical facial pain". It only happens when i inhale thru my nose, and it comes and goes (ill have it for a couple of months and then itll go away, then it comes back).

I was very anemic for about 8 years and doctors kept wanting to test me, I took a ton of iron supplements, nothing worked at all, I finally just said - I think I am just anemic and a accepted it.

Fast forward a few years and a few other things start happening, stomach aches pains, mental fogginess, few other things and I basically self-diagnosed myself with celiac.

Went to see a gastro doc at MGH, told him I was like 90% sure I had it - told him everything and he was like, nah - you're fine, I think it's ibs. Practically forced him to give me an endoscopy to confirm and sure enough I was right - he said it was evident as soon as he got in, biopsy confirmed.... I so believe in trusting your instincts.

Good luck - hope you figure out what's wrong soon!

@mediagirl: Neurologist sounds like a good idea if the dentist already ruled out TMJ pain or other dental related pain.
Neurologists are the only ones who do head besides dentists and family doctors---even if it's bone, orthopedics don't do skulls.

@yoursilverlining: not yet. This just got bad on Thursday and has escalated since. Saw the dentist Friday and Urgent Care Saturday.

He has pain all on one side of his face, neck and head. His teeth on the right hurt and then the same side hurts with a headache and neckache. He can't eat right now because chewing triggers massive pain. And yet, the dentist didn't find anything and the doc said it wasn't a sinus infection. At least the doc had a recommendation: see a neurologist. The dentist said, "go on a liquid diet." Thanks for the help.

I need to stop googling things and freaking myself out. He finally got to sleep an hour ago. I'm hoping he feels better when he wakes up but I'm not optimistic about it.

Oh no! I hope they figure it out. My current unresolved medical issue is that my milk never came in. Nobody can figure out why, and all of the (many) treatments that the lactation consultant has given me aren't working. I'm pretty sure we'll never have a full answer for what went wrong.
