Getting test results and records has been challenging for us as well. It often involved calling around to multiple offices (pediatrician, specialist, hospital record department). Sometimes they would ask us to print out a form, sign it and fax it back to them, allowing for a couple months to process! I now try to remember to get a copy of the DVD when we get tests done, but that doesn't always happen. I can commiserate.

@MenagerieMama: good to know it’s not just me! Unfortunately some of these providers are not local so not only are their systems different, but I can’t physically take records myself, unless we have appointments set up already.

@jhd: I work in healthcare and luckily the system I’m in now can actually “see” records from most systems in the area because we use the same program. But getting paper records is a beast. I usually tell patients it’s about 50/50 to get records when we request and takes weeks. The fastest way is to get them yourself and bring them to where they need to go, which still isn’t easy :bummed:

All of DS's doctors including his PCP are in the same computer system and have access to everything on all of his charts. Yet I still have to have one send results to the other just because they won't pull it up on their computer. They want a separate copy

@muffinsmuffins: yes, i'd much rather them tell me it will take a while and then surprise me with results earlier than expected.

@JJ2626: i do try to get a physical copy when i can. that's a good reminder. i'm not sure it would have helped in this situation, but for small things it is helpful.

@Ajsmommy: yes! i realize sometimes people say "i'll send it today" and things come up, but i would expect if they got busy that afternoon, for example, they could send them the next morning. i feel like i shouldn't have to call multiple times.

@catgirl: ugh! and i can't imagine calling 14 offices to find a ped accepting patients!

Maybe just ask for the lab results? The MD could be behind on charting.

We moved out of state last summer and it was a nightmare to get medical records transferred. It took almost two months to get DD's records and they kept having excuses and new requirements. So obnoxious.

(We also had to call fourteen offices to even find a pediatrician taking new patients, but that is a whole other issue.)

I work in a field where we sometimes need med records and you are not alone.. I just recently had one office tell me they would send them that same day.. I didn't get them for 3 days so I called again and then they said they'd send them that day...the weekend happened and I finally got them on Monday (not the day I had called obvi)

So, sometimes if you request them for yourself you get them much quicker, then you can fax/email them to the referring doc. Obviously, that’s annoying and not how it should be but it’s worked for me. Sorry this sucks-good luck!

I’m in Canada so things tend to be slow here but they always tell us at least 2-3 weeks and we usually hear nothing unless there’s something significant to report. It’s annoying they told you so soon and you had to harass them though...I would much rather them just tell me longer and it end up sooner as a surprise!

DS2 has seen some specialists for tests lately and I’m super frustrated that records are never just sent quickly to the referring physician.

In one case I called several times yet it still took over 3 weeks before the records reached the right place. Now that doctor is out of town and won’t see them for another ten days.

We had another test on Monday and the tech told me I would get a call that afternoon. Fast forward two days and I have heard nothing. Call the ped and they haven’t received any records. I called the office and the receptionist gave me no info other than asking for the fax number to send it over. Which I had already provided on Monday. I will call the ped’s office tomorrow to ensure they received it.

Anyone else deal with this or have we just been unlucky?
