I am an AVID steak eater, and I generally eat it rare. Like, rare rare.

My doc told me there should be no red, and barely any, if at all, pink.

It makes me incredibly sad. I haven't eaten red meat for most of my pregnancy, and, not surprisingly, just found out I now have an iron deficiency. Lol.

I would get the steak. I avoided it when I was pregnant with DD, but DH and I went to a fancy steakhouse for Valentine's Day when I was pregnant with DS (about 34/35 weeks pregnant). I had a medium rare filet mignon and it was so, so good... I ended up throwing it up thanks to morning sickness, but I don't regret that choice at all!

@ladyfingers: I have eaten medium-rare steaks on multiple occasions throughout this pregnancy. Always at a reputable place or from the grass-fed cow we bought with our friends.

I wouldn't eat a hamburger med-rare for the reasons @prettylizy mentioned. Or a cut-rate steak, either: there's this gross stuff called meat glue that they use to make "filets" now.

@ladyfingers: I agree. If it isn't safe for a pregnant person, why is it safe for a not pregnant person? Pregnancy doesn't make you suddenly MORE susceptible to listeria or ecoli, the risk of contracting it is the same as always, its just not good for the baby for mama to be sick. I took the same food risks every day throughout pregnancy that I did throughout my entire life. Still here! lol!

@mrsmenow: True, but I've been avoiding steak my whole pregnancy for exactly this reason and I really want to try it at this place!

@PrincessBaby: LOL good point!

@prettylizy: Yes, that was my understanding too, so I figured it was just a lot of alarmist "better not" stuff out there.

I'm going to ask my doctor too, obviously, but just wanted to see what you ladies thought. I think I'm leaning toward the steak!

I know the risks of anything happening are very low but I always tried to stay on the side of caution so i only ate meat that was well done.

I ate rare steak throughout my pregnancy. If its from a reputable source, I would certainly go ahead and enjoy your medium-rare steak and not worry about it! :)

@ladyfingers: It's obviously whatever you are comfortable with, but I also love my steak rare, and I have had a couple of medium rare filets during my pregnancy. If it looked TOO rare in the middle, then I just ate around that part. I am in the camp that there is so much Pregnancy FearMongery, and while there may be some medical reasoning here and there, in general, I think if you cut out everything that everyone wanted you to cut out for 100% of your pregnancy, it would just be miserable! So I think one medium rare steak is okay as a little indulgence is fine!

PS: We always watch shows like on Game of Thrones on HBO that take place a long time ago. One of the characters was pregnant and she had to eat some type of raw animal that they had just killed as part of a sacrifice. It was like, heart had just stopped beating. DH pointed out to me that pregnant people used to do that all the time, meanwhile I worried about getting Listeria from Subway even after toasting my sandwich twice! Being careful is great, but again, I think you're fine to have the occasional splurge!

I didn't EVER cook my steak past medium rare. The concern is potential bacteria on the outside of the meat, (ecoli and such) which is killed when it is cooked. The inside of the steak isn't exposed to those things so its fine. Ground beef needs to be cooked through because it's been exposed throughout, but steak is fine. (That is what my OB told me). Steak on my friend, steak on.

I've never been told to avoid medium rare steak, although I know many people do. I haven't given it a second thought, as I know where the steak I buy comes from and I trust the source. My understanding is that most e. coli (the biggest concern with beef) is found in ground meat. The other concern is with other cuts of meat (non-ground) that have been machine tenderized. That shouldn't be the case with (a) good cuts of meat, (b) from a high-end place.

I would order the steak medium, which is a little more done than I normally would order. I do want to chime in that DH and Iwent to a steak house not too long ago. He got steak and they had a stuffed chicken that I ordered. We both agreed that the chicken was probably the best thing we had ever eaten, so if you can't stand the cooked steak, maybe the chicken won't be as bad as you think;)

OK, high-class problems ahead.

We're having our company holiday party at an awesome local steak house we'd never be able to afford to go to by ourselves. I really really want to get the filet mignon but I can't stand my steak cooked more than medium rare.

I have had so many diet restrictions already with the GD that the thought of getting chicken at a fancy steakhouse holiday party makes me want to cry. I'll be 33, almost 34 weeks -- is it ok to have a medium rare steak, or should I order it more well-done than that? Or just have the (*sob*) chicken?

My only other choice on the menu we chose is snapper, which I can't have because of high mercury.
