I think you are 100% right! We actaully just blocked off that room with a baby gate. The cats and either go under the gate or jump over to get to the littler box, plus we have another one upstairs for them (the puppy hasn't ventured up there yet!) So I'm sure they will be fine! In response to your question, I don't think he's marking his territory as he is too young to understand that type of stuff - I think the smell of cat urine is simply making him want to go. Not sure what you can do to stop it, you will just have to constantly watch him when he is freely roaming, and make sure he is going out like every hour or as often as you can possibly manage, so even if he feels like going, he won't be able to near the litter box! At 3 months old, they could prob hold it for around 3 hours maximum, so I would definitely try to take him out every 3 hours at the minimum. Puppies are soooo much work but they are so worth it aren't they?? Basically we have one of the litter boxes in the spare bedroom of ours, and the 2 times Bear has gone in there, he kind of smells around, by the litter box, then pees on the carpet next to it.
