I guess it probably depends on the culture where you are, but it's pretty common here (in Boston) to attend the wake if you can only do one, mostly because they tend to be at night and people come after work. Although funerals are certainly open to anyone grieving, I tend to agree that they are more personal. From what I understand, the wake is for more distant friends and relatives... while a memorial/funeral is for friends and family who are closer. </p> <p>If he's your direct boss and you guys are close, I would go to both. If you can only get away for one, I would go to the funeral.
