@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I just really want those stuffed dates right now! And good call on the veggies, since there are so many in the main veggie side already. And you have the salad. Just make sure she eats cheese before you make any dates without bacon.

Update: I tested out the buttermilk ranch chicken & potatoes dish and the green bean succotash. I just so happened to have two tasters- Mr. Lime & my mom. OMG the chicken & potatoes is out of this world amazing! My mom doesn't even like dark meat and she said not to change a thing. Definitely try this at home!!

The succotash tasted fine and looked really pretty, but it wasn't amazing. One of my SIL's is the only vegetarian coming to the party. Mr. Lime suggested I just ask her what's her favorite veggie. This way I'll make sure to include it in the roasted veggie side dish and not have to worry about a second veggie dish. The roasted veggies will have about 4-5 different veggies in it anyways.

The only other recipe to try out beforehand are the stuffed dates. @honeybear: Great idea about just leaving off the bacon! When I test it out I will make it both ways. Who knows you may have just saved me an extra step.

Thank you for all your input!!

I thought the same thing as others about having red wine and/or beer but if you know your crowd, you're good!

Other than that, this sounds soooo delicious! Can I come?

I might have some appetizers for the kids in the kitchen or something - Goldfish crackers, clementines, baby carrots and ranch, apple slices and cream cheese dip, etc. It won't take much time for you and it's something they can load their plates with and just have a piece of chicken and some salad if they are picky.

@Foodnerd81: I created a tentative timeline with everyone arriving close to on- time 4 pm. I'll have the drinks set out before arrival. Within the first 15 minutes I'll bring out the apps. This way at least a dozen people should be there and realize they have to share the apps. The alcoholic beverages will be in the kitchen, which will force people away from the dining room buffet for a bit. Tree trimming will begin and my plan is to serve dinner by 5 pm.

I just placed my dinner serveware out on my kitchen counters and I could add a third appetizer opposite the where the booze will go (my kitchen is U-shaped). I think if I add one more veggie my guests will revolt! :silly: A few of my guests definitely love pop corn. Maybe I could pop some and mix in cinnamon and cayenne pepper or find some fun holiday seasoning mix.

My mom said the same thing that people will BYOB if they have a strong preference.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: how long will people be hanging around eating appetizers? I was going to suggest something light, like a veggie tray, in addition to what you already have, just in case people want to keep eating. But I would prefer the caprese skewers over the dip, as would my LO (the dip also sounds yummy though, and I LOVE the dates).

Also agree that adding an extra veggie side would be good. I think anyone who is picky about their drinks will bring their own as a hostess gift anyway (like beer drinkers will show up with a six pack and probably a bunch of people will bring a bottle of wine).

That punch sounds so good and I really want some now. Perfect for the pregnant lady who wants something special that isn't water. :)

As for kids, you could check with their parents but I think most will bring a back up if they know their kid is picky. Mine would eat the skewers, the roasted veggies, and that succotash thing you posted. She hardly eats chicken because she's a weirdo. And if she was still hungry I'm pretty sure she'd fill up with dessert.

@travelgirl1: I appreciate your input! @travellingbee: @Mrs. Champagne: Ok, I won't plan for a separate "kid-friendly" item. We always have pasta, butter, and parmesean cheese on hand, which I think is "kid-friendly" in case I need to whip up some pasta on the fly.

@Greentea: Initially, I was going to serve spinach dip instead of the caprese skewers. My dining room buffet fits two appetizer trays, the punch bowl, drink dispenser and accompanying cups, cocktail napkins, and appetizer plates. I don't have room to add a third appetizer. What's more yummy?

Cold spinach dip w/ crostinis (this taste creamy/ cheesy)

Caprese skewer: mozzarella ball/ cherry tomatoe/ fresh basil w/ balsamic drizzle

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: If you know that the guests will prefer hard liquor over beer or other types of wine, then that's fine :-) Moscato and Johnny Walker are just very specific flavors so I thought some more basics would be good. Vodka maybe like you said! (I personally don't like either whiskey or moscato so maybe I'm biased).

@Smurfette: Unfortunately, I have no clue what the kids like to eat or will eat. I know the 8 y.o. eats "kids menu" type of food when out, but idk if that is what is served at home too. The 11 y.o. eats all kind of stuff, but idk if she'll definitely like what's on the menu. How do you usually handle going to someone's house for the first time and the menu is unknown?

@SweetiePie: Coffee is on the menu! I'll have coffee on hand because that is what I grew up with when entertaining. Besides my parents, no one else on my guest list that's hosted me has ever served coffee, so I doubt more than 1 or 2 people will actually drink it. If requested, I'll share my Red Roobis tea & honey.

Since we are serving had liquor (Johnny Walker) I don't think the two beer drinkers in the group will miss beer. One has another party to attend after ours anyway, so maybe he'll get beer there. I think I will sneak Vodka on my spirits run for a more crowd-friendly liquor to spike with the punch.

I think the menu sounds wonderful and as long as you make enough quantity of each it is enough variety/items.

I agree with you, I also would be concerned about the beverages. I like to have lots of options! Beer I would definitely have a couple of varieties (a basic domestic and something fancier). And a red wine option, Pinot noir is usually safe. And in my experience not everyone likes moscato, but maybe you already know that your guests do? If it were me I'd also have a pinot Grigio, sauv blanc or Sancerre.
And for holidays I do try to have soda. Gingerale at least.
I'd also be sure to have some tea with the coffee after dinner.

You're a rockstar! That's a lot of guests for anyone, let alone a pregnant woman. Go girl!
