My RE prefers all the way through the pregnancy, but she said if my OB felt strongly about it I could discontinue after the first trimester. If I did, I was told I needed to get the glucose test 2 weeks after discontinuing. My OB doesn't feel strongly, so I'm on it all the way through. RE and OB both said it's safe all the way through, but there's no consensus on whether all the benefit for PCOS patients is derived during the first trimester or if it continues later on.

I was on it through 12 weeks and slowly weaned off, didn't abruptly stop. I was on 1500 mg and dropped 500mg per week for 3 weeks so I was completely off by 15 weeks

ugh I hate things when there's no consensus! Haha. Based on various blood test over the past 2 years, I do not believe I have issue with blood sugar or insulin resistance. My OB didn't even mention it when he prescribes metformin, he just simply explained that it would control my hormone levels. Also, I was experiencing some dizziness for the last week, so I bought a blood sugar monitor and my diabetic friend explained how to use it. I've been checking everyday before breakfast and after dinner, and all of my levels are normal, so the metformin must be doing its job.

My BMI is normal and I think I have a less severe case of PCOS, my average cycles were 32-34 days with nonmedicated ovulation CD 17-21. My miscarriage made it much worse for a couple of months, though.

I feel like since I'm on such a low dose to start with, it really can't hurt to continue... I'm of course petrified of another miscarriage.

I've asked several doctors the same question and usually get differing opinions. My GP told me to stop as soon as I got a BFP. I also see an endocrinologist for diabetes and she said that she recommends patients stay on it throughout their pregnancy. My ob/gyn said I could do what I felt comfortable with since their isn't a lot of studies saying it's harmful or not. With my son I stayed on it until 14 weeks as I had read that it may decrease the incidence of miscarriage and I had a previous loss so I wanted to cover all my bases.

I was originally supposed to stay on it until the end of the first tri - but I was getting so sick from morning sickness and the metformin wasn't helping, so the doc said there was no reason not to discontinue it right away. I ended up stopping right around 10 weeks, and have had a successful pregnancy so far (27 weeks now.)

@ShootingStar: what do you mean when you say pre-diabetic? My RE said since I have PCOS that is insulin resistant that I'm at risk of developing diabetes later. Does that mean I'm pre-diabetic? Or did you have other symptoms? I don't have any other symptoms.

Oh, and btw Metformin will probably not help much once you're pregnant unless you do actually have blood sugar issues.

My RE told me she was fine with me stopping Metformin at 14 weeks, but to do whatever my OB felt was right. I am currently 34 weeks and still on Metformin - my OB told me to stay on it for the duration of the pregnancy to help decrease the risk (somewhat) of gestational diabetes and to keep my hormone levels a bit more balanced. I haven't heard of many staying on it for this long, but it's been working for me, so I just go with it  Good luck!

That's really weird. I had a similar problem, but that they wanted me to stop after the first trimester. I did a ton of research and that's what the recommendation used to be. I haven't heard of stopping it immediately though. The newer recommendation is to stay on throughout pregnancy but some doctors still don't do that.

Are you pre-diabetic? I have to warn you that if you're pre-diabetic you are going to fail the GD test. I was really upset with my medical care because I was pre-diabetic so there was no way I was going to pass the test. I kept taking Metformin and it helped my blood sugar stabilize a ton. But eventually my endocrinologist convinced me to stop and then my blood sugar went haywire. For weeks and weeks it was a disaster and we kept messing around with diet and then insulin and I never really got it back under control.

We are looking to get pregnant again this summer and I'm going to find a different endocrinologist that is more on board with the more modern methods.

My doctor admitted that it's somewhat controversial in the medical community, but she said she has not seen a study where metformin has been harmful during pregnancy, so she prefers to play it safe.

I think I'm on it (1500 mg) until week 20?

@DesertDreams88: my RE wanted me to stay on it til 20 weeks but since my nausea hit me at 5 weeks, I stopped taking all oral meds. They were more concerned about preventing my nausea, so they said it was fine. When I graduated from the RE at 9 weeks, I was feeling a bit better and mentioned to my OB that my RE wanted me to stay on Metformin. OB didn't seem concerned that I was off of metformin. Though, I'm still getting nauseous even at 17 weeks, I don't know if I could stomach taking 1500 mg of metformin, Those pills are huge.

Oh, my RE did tell me to do what my OB asked,

First off, I'm really sorry if you think this fits better in the pregnancy thread - I toyed with the idea but I thought there would be more relevant responses here!

I was diagnosed with PCOS and put on 750mg of Metformin, extended release, as well as progesterone for during my LP. My doctor wants me to stop metformin once pregnancy has been confirmed. This seems to contradicts EVERYTHING I read online, including medical journals and research studies. Mostly I see that it decreases miscarriage risk during the first trimester, by controlling your hormone levels. I can try talking to my doctor about it but I don't want to come across as telling my doctor what to do, or like, "I read on the internet..." blah blah.

If you were/are on metformin, what does the doctor recommend in case of pregnancy?

@bluestripedbee: I think you posted about this awhile back but couldn't find the post!
