I took metformin (1500 mg daily) leading up to and through my latest fresh IVF cycle. I do not have diagnosed PCOS or insulin resistance, but I did have previous failed cycles of IVF. So my RE recommended it for general hormone regulation (I did have ovarian hyper stimulation syndrome during my first fresh IVF cycle - my estrogen was a bit out of control). It seems to have done its job because the fresh cycle was much more controlled than the first time around.

@PurplePumps: For me, even though there was no clear cut reason for adding the metformin, my RE felt like it couldn't hurt. I did not continue on it for the FET, only during stimulation through beta for the fresh cycle.

@PurplePumps: It started the met about seven months before Clomid. I have lean PCOS so I'm not sure if that makes a difference.

I took 1500 mg for a long time. I was diagnosed with PCOS and DOR. I took Metformin for PCOS and dexamethasone for the DOR. My 3 IUIs while on those meds failed so I moved onto IVF. IVF worked for us.

@PurplePumps: I have no signs of insulin resistance. (and I was at a healthy weight FWIW). My OB was the one who prescribed my medications and I think it was a situation where it couldn't hurt.

@Hoots: @DesertDreams88: How long were you on the Met before starting Clomid. My RE had told me that it wouldn't help since there is no insulin resistance, but I've been debating asking for it before my next IVF cycle anyways. As long as it can't hurt.... I'm willing to try anything.

@PurplePumps: my ob didn't test me for insulin resistance but I had extensive bloodwork done a year and two years before the PCOS diagnosis, and insulin was normal both times. .

@PurplePumps: My original number was within normal range, but on the high side. I don't remember specifics. I was well within normal range by the time the RE repeated the testing. But she also said it was the first line treatment for PCOS regardless when she upped me to 1500mg.

I started on 500 mg/day and moved up to 1500 mg/day. Regular metformin was hard on me, but my RE switched me to ER, which helped me up the dose. I never got past 750 with the regular. I only ovulated once in 6 months on metformin alone and it was at cd 41. When I upped to 1500 mg/day I also started clomid and conceived with 100mg clomid plus the metformin.

RE recommended that I stay on it during the entire pregnancy unless my OB felt strongly otherwise (she didn't). I discontinued at 1 wk postpartum because it wasn't really serving a purpose and the 1500 mg was hard on my stomach (but interestingly I had no stomach issues with it during the actual pregnancy).

I had a moderate case of PCOS ... ovulated naturally but late and unpredictably. My ob put me on 750mg of Metformin and 50mg of clomid days 2-6 and I got pregnant on the 1st cycle. I was temping, charting, and BD EOD.

My ob started me on a low dose of met to see if I could tolerate it; it usually causes an upset tummy if I remember correctly. I did not experience such symptoms.

@mrsjd: Thank you for sharing and congratulations on your pregnancy! The ovulation predictor kits are a great suggestion. I used them last time and they did work for me, I need to order some now that I'm getting more serious. I keep trying to guess my ovulation but so far it's been tough, no real pattern since I've been tracking.

I took Metformin in combination with Clomid, Estradiol, and Progesterone (vaginally). I have non-hormonal PCOS (meaning the only sign that I have PCOS is the cystic ovaries). I did not ovulate with any regularity on my own prior to this regime. I think the Clomid probably did the trick more than the Metformin, but who knows. I took 50mg Clomid and I think either 1000 or 1500mg Metformin (split into two 500mg or 750mg doses morning/night). I got pregnant on the second cycle of this. I'm now 25 weeks.

I encourage you to take ovulation predictor kits so that you know for sure (as sure as you can without an ultrasound to confirm) whether you ovulated or not using Metformin. I used Clear Blue Digital for the ease of reading, but others have had success with cheapies. Good luck and let me know if I can answer any other questions!

If you took Metformin for the purpose of helping to conceive, what dose did you take?

I have PCOS but got pregnant with my son naturally after almost a year of trying. I am trying again but my endocrinologist has prescribed Metformin to help me ovulate. I do ovulate on my own but with long irregular cycles, it's hard to know exactly if/when. I've been taking 1000 mg of Metformin per day and I am pretty sure I ovulate most cycles. My doctor said studies recommend 1500-2000 mg so I am going to increase to 1500. We've been NTNP for about 8 months but now are more serious about trying.

Just curious about others' experiences and if increasing Metformin did make a difference for some people. If we get lucky and conceive, I think I'll have questions for people with similar experiences (and my doctor) about staying on it through pregnancy and breastfeeding but I'll try not to get too ahead of myself.
