I started with a dose of just 500mg Metformin for the first week and that did make me nauseated. Then the next week I started 1000mg and I got even more sick... but then by the third week my body seems to have adjusted and I don't get sick from it at all anymore.

I felt awful in the beginning on Metformin, but I have now been on it since September 2011 and I am fine for the most part. I do notice that when I eat too many carbs I tend to have more of the stomach side effects. I am on 2000mg now, but it took me a while to work up to that dose.

My doctor started me on 1500, and I took 3 pills per day (one with each meal). I think breaking up the doses really helped me out.

I would say it took me a good 4 weeks (maybe closer to 6) before my body adjusted. I'm sorry you're experiencing side effects! It's a hard medication to get used to, but it will happen!

I have no experience with this medicine but an anti anxiety drug I took for a while made me extremely sick to my stomach. I found that the most effective thing was to take it at night, and to drink small amounts of water throughout the day. For some reason drinking a lot of water at once makes me pukey.

I take 1500mg at night right before bed.. I don't get nauseous and i think that may be because i fall asleep right after. I have noticed that prenatals (which have always made me slightly nauseous) REALLY make me nauseous when i'm taking metformin, so now i spread out when i take those (prenatals at lunch with food, metformin at bedtime) to try to even it out

I don't have any personal experience with Metformin, but I'm sorry it's so rough! Have you ever looked into taking Pregnitude? It apparently mimics a lot of the good effects of Metformin, but without the really bad tummy side effects.

It gave me really bad stomach issues when I started taking it. I had to gradually increase the dose over a month until my body adapted to it.

Do you just take one pill? I take two 500mg pills a day.

ETA- just saw that while I sat on the page for a bit, you posted that you just take one. Can you ask your DR about taking a few doses a day?

I also "go" every day around 10 a.m. But it's not like an urgent "I have to go now!" thing...it's just that I can count on doing it every day.

I also found that when I limited carbs, I didn't feel as nasty. I could never do away with them completely, but I limited processed carbs to one meal a day when I was upping my dose and felt a lot better when I stuck to that.

i had severe stomach issues with metformin, the same dose you are on. everyday around 10 am ( i took my meds at night) i was running to the bathroom, but not to vomit.

it lasted a few weeks but eventually got better. my dr said if it's too much you can try an additional week on the lower dose then up it again.

are you on regular metformin or the extended release kind?

I'm on the ER, and my doctor said it was fine to take at night before bed (instead of with meals) and when I started doing that, I didn't have nausea any more.

She said people tend to have less nausea on the extended release version

So I think I might have narrowed down my severe nausea and I think it's related to taking 1500 mg of Metformin. It was so bad that I was dry heaving and had to keep eating crackers or drinking water to keep myself from throwing up last Friday.

When I take 1000 mg of Metformin, my nausea goes away (or at least I don't see it as much). I've noticed this twice so far that I'll start getting severe nausea about 3pm (about 15 hours after I take Metformin). I thought it was food related at first because of how late in the day my nausea started but when it happen yesterday, I've concluded that it has to be the high dose of Metformin.

Anyone else have side effects like this? Or other side effects?

I'm going to talk to my dr today about the nausea and see if I can stay at 1000 mg and not go up to 1500 mg.

Oh, I know I'm suppose to eat when I take Metformin and I made sure I ate on Tuesday night. It still didn't help.
