@GardenFloral: YOU might not want to believe in the connection between ZIKV and microcephaly, but it's not something the CDC made up as you implied.

The virus has been found in the brains of babies that succumbed to microcephaly, as well as in placental/fetal tissue from women that lost pregnancies after Zika virus infection:
https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/23/3/16-1499_article

Furthermore, microcephaly in connection with ZIKV infection has been reported in 28!!!! countries, and NOT primarily because Brazilian women are traveling outside their homecountry to give birth:
http://www.who.int/emergencies/zika-virus/situation-report/15-december-2016/en/

Fine if you aren't altering your travel plans, but no need to spread misinformation about a virus with potentially serious, irreversible consequences.

OP, if I were you, I would ask my husband not to go if I wanted to TTC soon. It's not worth taking the risks IMO.

Only you can decide what feels right for you. I've been following Zika a lot since it first came out as we're TTC and my DH has a job that has him traveling for extended periods of time in Florida, Central America, and the Caribbean.

At first I was pretty concerned, and I'm normally 100% on board with doctors. I'm the girl that eye-rolls people (aka: Jenny McCarthy) who think they know more than doctors....but Zika is just one area I can't get on board with.

I usually try to fly into wherever my DH is for work for weekly trips, and when all this first came out I was very seriously thinking about cancelling my trips. I think Zika is most definitely a real thing, I just don't think it's the cause of all the Microcephaly in babies. The outbreak seems to be concentrated in Brazil, which ironically is also where large amounts of pesticides have been sprayed and added to drinking water to eradicate mosquitoes. In fact that was the original "cause" of Microcephaly, and then all of a sudden the CDC pops up with the Zika explanation - which to me shows nothing more than them covering their ass.

Have there been Zika cases all over the place? Of course. But even still the Microcephaly is still concentrated in Brazil and the handful of cases in other places are generally people who have traveled from Brazil to have their babies in other places. Every other country with pregnant women who tested positive with Zika have all been having successful pregnancies with no Mircocephaly.

I'm still making a trip to FL next month to visit my SIL (who lives there and is currently 8.5 months pregnant) and meet her new baby, as well as keeping my Mexico trips this winter.

At the end of the day if you feel uneasy about, you shouldn't go. No sense if feeling stressed out about being there or feeling anxious about TTC because of your trip to FL.

@winniebee when I asked I was told that they have gotten a lot of push back on doing testing without symptoms or pregnancy. I will call again to see if it has become more available.

That would make it easier and ease my mind about him going.

@MACSUNSHINE: really? My OB has said that labs do Zika testing all the time. I was thinking you could both get tested on your return and put off ttc for 6m if needed.

I would not go but the Florida Health website seems to indicate that it is safe to travel since they are living the restrictions. I am missing Christmas in Florida with my family because I will be 22 weeks pregnant and my doctor advised against going anywhere in Florida.

Thanks all, if testing was a viable option I would do that but it is not. It is possible by January with winter here the warning may be eliminated. He has seen the CDC website, thanks, he is much more here are the numbers and it does not concern him enough to not go.

@keenysunshine your thoughts are my thoughts, I just do not believe enough is know about the impacts of the virus. :

@MACSUNSHINE: I do agree with your husband that the actual risk is low, but the potential consequences are so high. Researchers are still finding effects outside of microcephaly in babies that seemed fine in utero/at birth. Just not worth taking that risk, no matter how small, in my opinion. Good luck convincing DH

Thank you, @peachykeen that is my view. It is a friend that we see maybe once a year, so in my eyes neither of us should go. It is Miami proper downtown.

I will try to discuss with him again otherwise I think we will be waiting until next summer to try if he insists on going. I spoke to my doctor and he said absolutely not, for whatever reason my husband just thinks the risk is so low. Thank you all!

Assuming it's in Miami proper, I would not go unless it was someone VERY close to me. I also would not want DH to go, as Zika is also transmitted through sex. If the wedding was outside of the "danger zone" of Miami-Dade county, though, I would be open to it for a less close friend/family member as well.

@Shantuck: Unfortunately this isn't likely to be a possibility. The labs that do Zika testing are bogged down with tests for those believed to be exposed and pregnant. It has been difficult/impossible for anyone else to get this test so far, helpful as it may be.

Ok my husband and I are at a stalemate. We have a wedding in Miami in January, my position is neither of us should go as that is right around when we hope to start trying (if I actually wean our son).

My husband is insisting that he go and strongly encouraging me to join him. He gets my concerns and respects them but he views it as such a small chance. I, on the other hand, agree that the risk is low however it isn't my life that is at risk by going (simply said).

Whole lot of what ifs but I guess I am seeing if anyone has any other views or information that we should consider? My husband is going, my doctor's recommendation is to wait 6 months to try.
