Have you tried babywearing? At least if she was secured to you and you fell asleep sitting up you wouldn't have to worry about her falling or anything. And maybe she'd find it soothing.

@winniebee: I don't feel like that's why she's so sad, but it really bugged me that she told me that. I went in to my induction planning on no pain meds but I caved 10 hours in to the pitocin when they told me I had no progress and all I remember my doula saying was "She's going to be a really fussy baby for weeks now, just so you know." She told me it caused her colic again when I emailed her last week.

Thanks for confirming that it wasn't my epidural that did this to her. I know it's stupid thing to even worry about, but I felt bad enough having the epidural to begin with so that doesn't help I guess.

@brownie: Thanks for all the tips- I'll definitely re-evaluate what I'm eating and if that's what is bugging her. We have a picture of Emma swaddled in her swing with the same sour look on her face- my heart :(

@winniebee: This is actually something I wonder about too where my DH's family is rife with GI issues, reflux and collitis. Again though, I have to wait for our appointment for a doctor to see her. They said if it was urgent to go to the ER, but they can't move it up :( . I do swaddle, swing and baby-wear in a Maman Kangarou but none of it seems to help. It might be time to break out the vacuum!

Have you contacted your pediatrician about it? That is a lot of crying and awake time even for a newborn. It sounds like it could be more than just colic - perhaps reflux? My son had a very difficult time after feedings while he was younger, though he fussed more than actually cried. It turns out he was dairy intolerant (and maybe soy intolerant) and also had reflux - reflux can be very painful for infants. He was on baby zantac for awhile and ultimately was switched to prilosec to help make things more comfortable while eating. Also if your baby has a food intolerance you need to not only cut out the major foods (cheese, milk, yogurt, butter...but all derivatives too. if you start reading labels you'll see that EVERYthing has dairy in it).

Have you tried the 5 s's? Do you swaddle? Do you have a swing? I remember one day where I literally put my son in his swing (swaddled), turned on the vaccumm cleaner and we both napped. It was crazy, but it worked. Also, do you baby wear? My son used to take crazy long naps in the moby...doesn't help you but it might help her to get some rest. She must be exhausted!

To your original question, there were times when I was really sleep deprived and couldn't remember things I had just done....or I would wake up in bed thinking I was feeding my son (I wasn't). It's scary. I know it's hard, but hopefully you can find a way to get some rest.

@JessicaMcB: It sounds like gas like others have said. From my personal experience it was from food (dairy and soy). It could still be food. I made the mistake of replacing all of my dairy with soy products.

Here is what my son did for 12-15 hours a day http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkQlxf9pdPE&feature=g-upl

You said the swing didn't work but we would swaddle swing him and that really helped (we did the gas belt and then swaddle to put pressure on his tummy).

I hope you can get past this. It was the hardest time of my life and I really wish I could have spent more time with him not crying. I also hate to suggest this (as that early you should be feeding often for supply), but you may want to front load feedings in the morning instead of backload. I backloaded and he was up all night cause his tummy hurt. When we went to a 3 hours schedule things went better (cause he had time to digest) BUT I feel it affected my supply as well. I had to work really hard after that to get it up.

[attach=1773/12/mcvbs4.448x600.iphone-20110529-076.JPG]

edited: This swing goes back and forth side or forward. We also would strap him in using the carseat hole in the back of that swaddle (till he got bigger and we just but it around). So we didn't leave him in there loose.

@highwire: This is my thought too even though I really, REALLY don't want to :(

@yoursilverlining: I've never heard of a colic hold before! We have a family doctor instead of a ped. and they won't see her for another month, so I'll have to youtube it.

If she is having a lot of trouble burping, she might have gas – my LO had bad gas which really aggravated colic. Some things that helped us were using the “colic hold” – basically hold your LO upright with one hand supporting her bum and the other supporting her head/neck so she is secure. Move her up and down this way. Our pediatrician showed us this hold, so maybe ask your pediatrician about this. Holding her in the colic hold and bouncing on the edge of the bed worked most of the time. Just holding her tight and bouncing on the edge of the bed worked well too. Bicycle her legs – lots (multiple times a day). Go for a drive. Put LO in her carseat (strapped in) and swing the carrier back and forth – this almost always calmed LO down within about 1 minute. Pedia-Care gas drops (colic water did not help us). Warm bath. Massaging her belly. We also got her an electric papasan chair that moves back and forth and side to side which she preferred to a bouncy chair and a swing.

@JessicaMcB: :( Maybe it might be time to ask the MIL to put in some time off work. It will take a few days before she can be there but maybe knowing relief is on the way will help you out a little.

@highwire: No, his work doesn't allow paid time off and in the dead of Canadian winter if you choose to take time off in construction you're essentially signing your own lay-off. He keeps saying he'll take time in the spring, but if she's still this bad in April or May I will have lost my mind by then.

@JessicaMcB: my baby was the same way and I've finally figured out that she screams because he is so tired and doesn't know how to fall asleep. She gets better as the weeks go by, but being able to get her to nap by bouncing her has been a lifesaver. Definitely try it!

@yellowbird: Hmm, I'll try to borrow my SIL's exercise ball again and see if that works. She'll only fall asleep in my arms and only after hours of cluster feeding, screaming at the breast, unsuccessful burping, screaming at the burping, being changed and screaming over being changed. I feel bad because I find myself getting annoyed with how angsty she is late at night even though I know its not her fault and she doesn't feel well.

Mommy guilt :(

@yoursilverlining: He works 16 hour days, 6 days a week in fairly dangerous "hot digs" (construction jobs involving live electricity). If he goes in to work without his faculties about him the reality is he could be seriously injured/die. We honestly have no idea what's causing the colic- my doula suggested it's because I had an epidural :(

@brownie: I cut out dairy once she was born because DH is lactose intolerant, but I didn't think of soy. I'll try it out, thanks! She screams in the swing/bassinet/bouncer though.

The only way I can get my LO to fall asleep is holding her in my arms and bouncing on an exercise ball. Worth a try?

You probably won't like this, but I recommend removing dairy and soy from your diet if you are breastfeeding or try a nuetrogamin formula if bottle feeding. My son was miserable and that was the best thing we could do. Typically you try it for 2 weeks and see if there is improvement. We also loved happiest baby on the block and he slept in a swing. But for the first few weeks he didn't sleep until 3am when I stopped feeding him for the night.

That amount of sleep doesn't sound healthy for you at all!
Colic does get better; do you have any idea of what might be aggrevating the colic?

@highwire: I wish :( . The best I could do is my MIL ,but she needs a week's advance notice that I need help to take the time off of work. I haven't slept since 2 A.M. on Wednesday (for two hours) when DH tried to take her, but then woke me up begging me to take her because she's so terribly fussy.

Has anyone ever seen the revamped Nightmare on Elm Street from a couple of years back? The protagonist kept micro-napping (slipping out of consciousness without being aware of it while awake) and I totally didn't believe it was a real thing for people not being stalked in their dreams by Freddy Kreuger.

However, on day 16 of no sleep with a colicky baby girl I now KNOW they're real. Just a little scary when you're snuggling the baby and can't tell if you're really awake or not. I have to rest her on a pillow on my lap in case I slip off and my arm gives :(

My husband can't get up with her at all during the night and works all day long so I don't have anyone to give me a break. I literally have 17 hours worth of sleep to my name and she's been alive for 16 days.

Has anyone else experienced micro-naps during the newborn stage? Does it ever get better? Do you come out of your micro-naps in a panic that you've dropped/squished/lost your baby?
