We did a 2 PM party recently and we just did snacks and cake. We made a ton of snacks though. We made pigs in a blanket, chips and dips. Veggie platters, pinwheels, meat cheese and cracker trays, candy and a giant cake and plenty of drinks. It worked out super well and people had plenty of food.

I vote for pizza! Honestly, if I wasn't told otherwise, I always expect real food at birthday parties no matter the time of day.

@Goldengirl: At a venue party, pizza would still be served with the 3:30 - 5:00 time frame. With that in mind, I think it's 100% fine to serve just snacks, but as someone else said, just note it VERY CLEARLY on the invitation..maybe on it's own line below the date and time. Something like "Snacks and Cake will be served".

I wouldn't really care either way, just would want to know in advance. I threw in the venue bit because if a lot of people in your area do parties at kiddie venues as opposed to at home, people are going to be accustomed to getting pizza at a party no matter what time of day it is :silly:

I would always do more food than less whether the party is at 8 am or 2 pm or whatever time ha At the time of your party,, I would be fine to do pizza and then give my kid an easy snack before bed rather than have a hangry kid and no time for dinner prep by the time we got home from the party.

With it over at five, I think you are fine to skip it if you’d rather. But definitely write it on the invitation! I generally don’t care either way but I need to know! And yeah everyone loves apple sauce pouches and they are nice and neat.

So this is tricky. How long is the party? If it's 330-530 and you're feeding my kiddo cake and ice cream at 5 without dinner then he's going to be a sugar high mess and too full for dinner. So in that case I'd do pizza at 5. But if you're doing cake and ice cream at 4 then I think you don't need snacks or heavy snacks.

FWIW, my husband is super chill and forgiving of everything. Especially of his family. The only time I've seen him pissed is when my niece's party was 330-530 and there was only snacks. My toddler was a hot mess after that.

Thanks everyone. Seems the results are divided! I should have mentioned the party is over at 5. So eating dinner before 5 is a bit too early IMO. My kid would still need something before bed. So I think now that I've typed that out and thought about it, snacks are the way to go!

I agree with @Mamaof2: being grateful for dinner being covered. My rationale is that i'm staying at a party that cuts into my dinner prep time, so i would be happy that i don't have to resort to eating out before getting the kids ready for bed.

If these are friends of mine coming to a party, i want them to hang out for more than 1-2 hours. I also am a strong believer in feeding guests, regardless of the time of day they come over.

I just went to a late afternoon birthday party that was from 4pm-5:30pm. While not the exact same time as yours, I thought what they served was perfect. Each child got a plate with an applesauce packet, fruit skewer, and a narrow slice of Papa John's pizza (looked like it was cut in half). All the plates were on the table before the kids sat down so they got a little bit of everything. Dessert was served after: cupcakes and/or cake.

Adults munched on crackers, cheese and fruit.

We just did a 3-5pm and did pizza/dinner. I put on the invite that there would be a pizza dinner. It was on a Sunday though so lots of people I know eat together kind of early Sunday anyway. We ate at about 4 and it worked.

Agree with @looch: A 3:30 party would end at 5 or 5:30 so I would serve pizza and cake at the very end - As a guest I would be so grateful that dinner is covered =)

Agree with just snacks! I’m sure people would happily eat pizza, but at that time of day it’s just not necessary. People will have eaten lunch and already planned dinner. Light snacks and cake sounds perfect.

@Silva: Interesting! I'm definitely leaning towards snacks (veggies, cheese/crackers, fruit, cake) vs pizza. I feel like I'd prefer that but I guess it's not a huge difference either way.

I prefer snacks and cake, because if there is dinner type food it just throws my whole rhythm off for the day. The kids fill up, and then we get home right before dinner time, and I still have to put food out but they don't touch it....we eat pretty early and go to bed early, so maybe thats more unique to my family. I know that whenever this question gets asked, other people like having pizza.

We're having a birthday party for my son's second birthday with some of his friends and their parents and a bunch of family (i.e. mix of adults and littles). The party is 3:30 so I was thinking at that time, it makes more sense to do snacks than order pizza since it's post-lunch, pre-dinner. Or should I just order pizza? What do people usually expect at these things? I have no idea.
