@CakeLady: Oh yeah definitely 1 major transition at a time. We were trying to take away the paci at this exact same time bc she was biting through them. I let her have the paci for another couple days after the bed transition, and both transitions worked well and were easier than I expected them to be. I hope his sleep improves asap!

@smocks: we have a couple trips coming up and we are transitioning him to a new daycare, maybe once we get through that we'll try converting his crib to a toddler bed.

Oh man I remember that, DD was a psycho at that age with sleep. It was terrible. She started hurling herself out of her crib even though it was lowered to the bottom rung (2x in one night, I finally just put her mattress on the floor). We made an emergency trip to Ikea to get a big girl bed, got a child*resistant* door handle, and let her do her own thing in her room once we put her to bed. It made a huge difference. We did let her scream like a banshee a few nights though, there was no soothing her regardless of if we were in there for the drama. It didn't last long and now she's a great sleeper, if that is any consolation.

The night after I posted this DS slept through the night - I thought maybe the phase had passed. Man was I wrong. The middle of the night wakeups just keeps getting worse!

He is now waking up earlier - 11:30 or midnight - and he immediately starts screaming like a maniac for Mommy and Daddy. Patting his back or rocking him in the glider are useless, he just keeps screaming until he is in our bed. Then he wiggles and hogs the bed and grunts all night long. Last night he managed to bash me in the eye and it's still swollen.

All of the sleep training advice I've read is focused on bedtime, which isn't an issue for us generally, and doesn't give any advice on how to handle middle of the night - especially for a very loud and willful toddler.

I was thinking we would start by NOT getting him out of his crib during the night, but going in and talking to him/soothing him as best we can.

Any other suggestions for helping this little guy, and his really tired parents, get some sleep in our own beds?

Yep! DD did that between 22 months. She'd wake up around 1:00am 2-3 times a week franticly crying out for us. Usually we could get her back down after a few minutes of rocking. If she was really fighting it DH brought her into our bed (which never worked out well, she's also a crazy active sleeper) or into the living room to watch a boring TV show and she passed out.

We went through something similar at exactly the same time (23 months). I think it is part of the horrible 2 year sleep regression. We lived through it, but barely!

DS is 20 months and has been waking up between 4am and 6am almost every night the last few weeks. He isn't usually crying, he just gets up and hollers and screeches and bashes around his crib. We refuse to go get him unless he's crying and upset and he usually conks out at some point but then is PISSED when we get him up at his regular wake time bc he's tired. Which then starts a cycle of pissy tantrums and all that jazz. Plus he's getting his 2 year molars so it's a few days of teething off and on. Kill me, I'm 38 weeks pregnant.

@CakeLady: it happened to us too. Our son would wake and need a snack and snuggles. It was a tough couple of weeks. I'm sorry you guys are going through it.

I do think it might be tied to a growth spurt. DS was genuinely hungry and after about two weeks he stopped needing a snack. We offered the same boring snack every night to try and keep it from becoming a stalling technique.

Right around that time (maybe 24-25m) , DS1 woke up and wouldn't go back to sleep unless we slept in bed with him and we had never previously coslept. We never figured out why it happened! We thought maybe separation anxiety since I was pregnant and we were moving?? We figured it would pass and it only would happen occasionally.

We've been going through this with our 21 month old and (GOD WILLING) seem to be on the other side of it. I found an old thread and it looked like a lot of people experienced it... let me go dig it up.

We had similarly awful sleep around that age. We actually switched her to the big bed because she was fighting the crib like crazy, but then that didn't really work either. She eventually calmed down and started sleeping in the crib like normal again. It last med a while and was so so exhausting!

LO's (23 months) sleep has gone completely off the rails. He still goes to sleep on his own pretty easily, but has been waking up at 12:30 or 2:30am crying and calling out for us. He gets really upset really quickly. When we go in he won't lie down or be rocked in the glider, he just fights and cries "go in there" (our bed). Once he's in our bed he has a hard time settling down and wants to talk. He is a really active sleeper and is ruining my sleep.

Last night was completely insane. He woke up at 11, DH brought him into our bed. Then at midnight he woke up and started yelling "eat, eat, milk, pancakes" and just kept yelling and yelling for food. I got him some milk and he finally settled down.

Is this some kind of growth spurt? late onset separation anxiety? a two year old sleep regression? a bad habit we have created? If it is a bad habit, how do we fix it?
