Ladies!! We had a rough weekend. Like, really rough. But, we are down to two naps (totaling 3 hours), and last night, she slept 11 hours!!!! Maybe it's a fluke, but it gives me hope. Thank you, thank you for the advice.

We are doing day 1 of less nap time today. It'll work out that she'll have 3 naps, but it'll be 3.5 hours instead of her usual 5 hours of nap time. We're using the weekend as our "it doesn't matter if we sleep or not" time, and really hoping this makes the difference. I'll report back on Monday. Thank you ladies so much!!!

@Vegmama: I'm not sure but it just seemed like a lot of napping for her age! But my DD moved to 2 naps around 6 months and averages 3 hours of naps per day. She sleeps 12 hours at night but still wakes up 1-2 times to eat (she's 8 months).

Every baby's sleep needs are different though, but my first inclination would be try to drop that evening nap and put her in bed a little earlier? Might work in your favor to try it out with the DST switch this weekend..

@Vegmama: @ScarletBegonia: Yeah. I also felt that like around 10 months she stopped the melting down due to tiredness thing and just learnt to deal with being tired better so we could push nap time out a bit.

@illumina: totally agree, spending time outside/shaking things up really helped with extending awake time. If he started casually rubbing his eyes around the 1.5 hr mark, if I brought him outside or introduced a new toy usually he'd perk right up and be okay for another hour or so.

@Vegmama: when we dropped a nap what really helped was getting out of the house...maybe the fresh air and stimulation kept her awake, idk! Oh and also food...she starts to look tired and then is fine again once food is coming!

@ScarletBegonia: Thanks. And, all of this is making sense ... No wonder she's having a hard time at night. Even though she's getting her recommended sleep in 24 hours, I need to shift some of that to night time.

@illumina: That 2 nap schedule sounds totally doable ... I'll just have to figure out how to keep her up between 11 and 2:30. I'm sure it's just a matter of a week or so to get her used to it.

I think you're totally right. I mean, when she woke up last night, she was ready to party. Just not tired at all. Hmmm ... Looks like we'll use this weekend to start trying. Our poor nanny ... we've changed sleep stuff so much. I'm probably scaring her from ever wanting kids.

@blackbird: Thank you! I think I'd like that in my bed, too! :)

@Vegmama: Kinda. Beforehand she was napping 930-11 and 230-4, so 3hrs of naps per day...then we went to just one nap from 12-2/3, so still 2-3hrs. If I were you I would limit your LO's naps because 5hrs of day sleep sounds rather a lot and she might just not need as much at night as a result.

My son is only 7.5 months, so obviously not going through the same stuff as your little one developmentally, but I have found that if he has over 4, or 4.5 hours of sleep in the daytime he usually has a night wake up, but if I limit his two naps to no more than 2hrs15minutes (and he has about 3 hours awake time before bed) he will *usually* sleep through.

Oh, and we limit naps to 2 hours, but I bet we could draw them out 15-30 minutes ... That would be 4 hours of naps each day instead of 5+.

@prettylizy: What's your sleep schedule like? We do: Up at 7, nap at 9:30, up at 11, nap at 1:30, up at 3, nap at 5, up at 6, bed by 8:30. She never fights any of her naps or bedtime.

I'll need to look into getting to two naps. She seriously will not stay awake more than 3 hours now, but I'm sure we could get there.

@Vegmama: with regards to dropping a nap and night time wakings...during our bad phase around 10/10.5 months LO would go down OK at bedtime but then wake up an hour later and be awake for ages. We dropped from 2 naps to 1 and things got better instantly.

@catomd00: I wonder that too. We did sleep scheduling (2 hour nap + 2.5-3 hours wake time), and she seems ok with it. She never fights going to sleep, just going back to sleep. We tried 2 naps last weekend, and she literally fell asleep on the floor while playing at the 3 hour mark.

Is night time waking usually a sign for knowing it's time to start reducing nap time?

Update: last night was horrible. The worst night of sleep yet. She went down around 8. Woke at 12, but was just fussing. We let her try to go back to sleep for 10 min, but it escalated. I went in, held her for a min until she was calm. Put her back down, and she went insane. I gave her 5 min, and nada. Went back in and decided to change her (lights off still) because I thought she had pooped. I then held her and rocked her for about 15 minutes until she was nearly asleep. Tried the bed again for 10 min and she just wouldn't calm down. At this point, it was 1:30, and we decided to just bring her in our room. At 2:30, she was still awake. Trying to crawl all over, sitting up and playing. I got the pack n play to try to get her in there, and she cried for 20 min. At 3:00, we brought her back in bed and she finally fell asleep. I woke up at 7 to her slamming her head down onto my face. The worse! :crying:

So yeah, I think we'll try the boring visits (picking up, no singing) tonight and hope she goes back to sleep.

Lastly, she has drool rash today and she's chewing on everything. I think tooth #7 is coming in. We'll probably give her ibuprofen before bed tonight. Maybe a shot of whiskey too! ;)

Maybe it's time to move to 2 naps?

I would soothe her in the crib. If that doesn't work, I'd rock/feed or basically do whatever worked. If you don't want to let her CIO, then you have to do something to soothe her...personally, if she is crying she needs something - that something might be snuggles. I don't think there's anything wrong with her wanting snuggles or you giving them to her.

You could try putting a book or small toy in the corner to see if that helps her when she wakes up. She might play a bit then fall back asleep?

@Vegmama: My 10 month old is doing this too. He's up between 3-4 am and just plays. The first night or two, I gave him a few ounces and rocked him and avoided eye contact like the plague - he was watching me like a hawk too, just waiting for interaction!

We hung a light up/music mobile on the side of his crib with a button that allows him to turn it off and on, so the past few nights I've woken up to him giggling to himself and playing in his crib for about 30 minutes, and then he goes back to sleep. Hopefully this stage passes soon for you!

@blackbird: @illumina: I hadn't thought of that option ... I think I assumed it was either 1) leave her in the bed, or 2) rock her, etc.

I'm hoping she sleeps through the night tonight. If not, I will do what you suggested: keeping it boring, just picking her up to calm her, and put her back to sleep.

I know she has the tools to self soothe and get to sleep (because she does it for every nap, and at bedtime), and this is our last hump to get over for "perfect" sleep.

Sounds like she wants to be in your bed! Or wants to read or be played with. E went through that stage. Now if she cries, I can go in, lay her back down, and tell her it's bedtime and to go back to sleep. She gets no positive reinforcement when she wakes up. We are BORING

If you read or sing to her, you might end up reinforcing the behavior....pick your poison, I guess :) But she may just need a little calming down. Once in awhile, E just needs a little milk and back down she goes

@Vegmama:  it's so hard once they become more aware...we did CIO to initially train but it seems so much harder now to let her cry.

What we do is if she isn't settling or wakes up, we leave her crying like a minute or so (this has reduced drastically!) but if she's not able to settle we go in just to make sure nothing is obviously wrong, pick her up, wait until she is calm and put her right back down. She might then cry for 5 minutes but we know she is probably ok. I think it's pretty important that we keep it very boring when we go in...no real interaction other than to say "shhh, S, it's ok" etc.

@illumina: We just got through the 9 month sleep regression. It was HORRIBLE.

I agree that bringing her into our room needs to change.

I don't think I'm ok with not going in there after she's cried for 10 minutes or so. I wonder if I should be getting her out of her bed to read/sing? She's pretty worked up once I go in there.

We didn't do CIO ... we did gentle sleep training, so letting her cry feels very foreign. <- And, at the same time, a few weeks ago, we had to start putting her down and leaving the room (because she would just stand up and play with us), so I've become a little more comfortable knowing the difference between panic cries and self-soothing ones.

I get the feeling that she'll probably keep doing it since she knows she'll get brought into your bed in the MOTN. The only way around it would be to try and settle her without doing that.

FWIW we went through our worst sleep at 10 months, not sure if it was the 9 month regression late or learning to crawl/pull up but we rode it out and things went back to normal pretty quick.

Our 10 month old is a champ at going to sleep, and we're on a good 3 nap per day schedule. We just recently got her sleeping in her own room. The first night, she slept through the night), and almost every night since, she's waking up between 12-3.

Usually my partner goes in to soothe her, but that rarely works, and he brings her into our room, where we'll all sleep til morning. Most of the time, we are "sleeping" since she's mostly kicking us, and rolling around.

Last night, I got up (at 1), and tried to soothe her. I read her a book, sang to her, and she fell back asleep ... for 5 minutes. We let her cry for about 10-15 minutes, but when she got hysterical, we went in to get her.

I know it'll take more than 1 night, but I also know she's fully capable of sleeping until at least 6 (as she's done it many times before).

What should we try? We're ok with a little crying, but not too much.
