I asked my nurse about this at my last appointment and she said that her advice is to see who is on call that day when I go into labor. (I was debating between seeing an OB versus a midwife). She basically said if I get there and it is my doctor then I can go with OB or if I don't like the doctor I can ask for a midwife. I think you can basically be like nope, I want the OB please.

@mrsmacSLP: I would also go ahead and get the name and number of the patient advocate liaison at the hospital. They usually have someone on staff to help patients speak up.

Thanks ladies, I made a call into a midwife I trust and told her what I was feeling. She informed me because I am a consumer of medical care I have every right to say no if she comes in. It set my mind at ease a bit, but as you said @bookwormmama I'll end up with an OB until a new midwife comes in.

So you would be delivering at a hospital? I had my first at a university hospital and I remember one of the midwives from the university group coming in and introducing herself, even though I was an OB patient. Since you'll be at a hospital, I wonder if it's possible to request the OB on duty if that midwife is on duty when it's actually time to deliver? I have absolutely no experience with this, but if you are really concerned it might be worth asking about.

My practice rotates patients through them various midwives and doctors for the weekly and monthly appointments and there is one doctor I always request not to see. He delivered my first and I just didn't like him. It was easy to keep from seeing him for scheduled care.

There was nothing to be done about delivery though - whoever was on call was who I got. I never doubted this doctor's competence, so I was hoping not to have him deliver but not overly concerned. Can you ask for the call schedule around the time you're due? I'd also find out how long their shifts are-- the doctors at my practice do 24 hour call but the midwives do 12. So there was a lot more changeover there.

you can definitely book your appointments around her. Ours assigns you 2 midwives (primary/secondary) one of which should be on call when you deliver. Sometimes you might need a third (if one is on vacation when you're close). I think with on call is you have no choice in who's available that day.

I'm not sure there's much you can do. They're probably required to do a certain number of on call shifts per month, that's how it was at my hospital in the midwife group. You can ask for a copy of the on call calendar when you get closer to your due date so when you go into labor you will know who will be there.
If it makes you feel any better, during my labor I went through 4 different midwife shift changes and I spent WAY more time with my nurses. The only midwife who spent much time in my room was the one who was on during the middle of the night (I'm assuming she was bored!)

Has anyone ever had a midwife group and requested to not work with one in particular?

I'm 38weeks and going with a midwife group through a hospital. There are 6 midwives and I encountered one I am not fond of and when I checked her reviews there are multiple reports of shoulder dysplasia. The other thing that got me is my Husbands questions were consistently pushed to the side as though they weren't important.

I was able to speak to another woman going through midwives and she had the same experience! I absolutely do not want her to be the one on call when I go into labor and I'm frightened she might be!

So- have you ever requested to not work with one? Any advice?
