I have frequent migraines that I never considered hormonal but since having DD I've been having bad migraines during AF. I had been on BCPs (and then pregnant) for pretty much my whole adult life, so I guess I never knew what an unmedicated cycle would be like, migraine wise.

Like @mrs.jacks, Imitrex is my miracle drug. I also take amitriptyline as a preventative (there are other great preventatives out there too but I've had trouble with allergies). I was so worried about pregnancy because I couldn't take either one, but my migraines were definitely less frequent while I was pregnant. My neurologist (and our pedi) also ok'd both meds for breastfeeding. They really are life-savers for me. Definitely talk to your GP and see a specialist if you need to.

@Pirouette: @mrswin: @wahine08: I always take a benadryl if there's bad weather coming my way and it usually works.

I've gotten bad migraines my whole life, and pretty much everything triggers it. Not helpful now, but if the hormonal migraines continue after you have a baby you might want to ask about getting on seasonale. It makes it so you get your period every three months instead of every month so that's a few less migraines.

When I was pregnant I took Tylenol 3 and lortab. I tried fioricet, but the caffeine did crazy things to my heart so I had to stop that. Also, if I had a very crazy long migraine that was lasting for weeks and wouldn't go away, my doctor gave me predisone. It's my wonder drug, it gets rid of the migraine and stops the long migraine cycle.

@wahine08: @mrswin: mine are triggered by the weather too! i dread summer because every time the humidity starts to rise and a storm is coming i know i'm homebound. :(

I don't (knock on wood) get hormonal migraines, at least i haven't yet. i am a bit nervous about this summer, between the summer and being pregnant, and seeing whether it triggers more migraines for me than usual.

Before I got pregnant I'd get them right before my period started and whenever the weather changes (specifically whenever a front is coming in). I got one bad one during the first trimester and two milder ones later in my pregnancy...which sucked but they came much less frequently when I was pregnant.

Excedrin migraine usually worked for me, but if not I moved on to Aleve and caffeine.

FWIW, I had only 1 or 2 migraines during pregnancy, after being a monthly (not hormonal) migraine-sufferer. So you could get lucky!

@Foodnerd81: Yep, I think it would be totally different. I've found that a naturopath prescribes supplements and things you can get at somewhere like Whole Foods, whereas an acupuncturist treats with chinese herbs along with the acupuncture and you have to see him/her more often to get results. Also, acupuncture treats problems like blood/qi deficiency, etc, but naturopaths think more in terms of western medicine. Hope that makes sense? Both are good, just very different :)

Mine came back when I went off BCP. I would get one about a week before my period. My acupuncturist said it was probably related to an estrogen surge at that point in my cycle? I got acupuncture for them and that seemed to help - they didn't go away but got less severe.

I had a terrible few weeks with them as I transitioned from first to second trimester of pregnancy, but overall have been mostly migraine free. I'm not sure what approach I'm going to take after I have the baby, assuming they come back.

Oh, and I never took any prescription medication for them - I have long cycles so even if I got one every month that only works out to 8/year. Caffeine, advil and the dark usually helped.

@MrsKoala: Pre-pg, I took Imitrex injections (self-administered) for my migraines. While I was pg (I had a migraine for 5 weeks!) I took a combination of Fioricet and Benadryl. It was approved by both my Neuro and OB, and it worked wonders! Maybe you could consider these as safe alternatives while TTC?

I got the worst headaches of my life going off the pill and during the first few months of my pregnancy. Even before ttc all my usual things only took the edge off, didn't cure them. Excedrin was the best though plus an ice pack on the back of my neck. The hormonal headaches are just brutal, much worse than my weather ones.

The one thing that totally helped me acupuncture. I went for maybe 6 weeks and I honestly haven't had a bad headache in MONThS. Changed my life.

But also, once your hormones level off after going off the pill the may get better. Until you get pregnant then all bets are off.

I don't get migraines as often as it sounds like a lot of you do, but I would highly recommend seeing a naturopath if they become a problem. It could be the result of an underlying condition and a naturopath would try to figure that out instead of prescribing drugs to dull the pain like a GP would do. I found out that my migraines could have been the result of having MTHFR (blood clotting disorder) and I don't think I've had one since I began treatment. Its hard to tell though, since mine were random and no more than once/month.

@MrsKoala: I need to research it again to see if it was definitely only the NSAIDs or both NSAIDs and caffeine. Probably one or two Excedrins won't hurt anything - I think Excedrin Tension Headache doesn't have asprin? It's hard to find anymore, but you can usually find the generic at Target and drugstores. The NSAIDs though can cause the egg not to release even though everything looks like it did.

I get terrible hormonal migraines too, though mine tend to be around AF. Do you have a prescription for Imitrex or something like it? Supposedly taking NSAIDs (which includes Advil, Motrin, aspirin, etc) can really mess with ovulation and I'd also be cautious about taking anything with caffeine right around then too, which really blows when you're in pain!

@fancyfunction: I did have a prescription once when I was in grad school but the pills gave me weird side effects like a hot and burning feeling in my scalp. I've talked about prescriptions with my GP a couple times but my migraines were infrequent at that time so I didn't do much about it.

Excedrin Migraine (along with Coke) has always been my fail safe medication but the one I had two days ago just would not go away. I usually don't have them for more than a day since sleep wipes it away. This time it lasted for 48 hours and nothing I did would help!

@MrsKoala: Ohh no, welcome to the hormonal migraine club... it sucks ;)
I don't always get them around ovulation but I get a massive one the day before AF arrives. They are worse than the ones I get from the weather or any of my other triggers. I treat them with what almost always works for me, Excedrin Migraine, complete darkness, quiet and a cold compress on my forehead/eyes with sleep.

Unfortunately, I do. My hormonal-related ones usually come right around the time I get my period. I was also getting them on the BCP placebo pills due to the estrogen drop. My dr. put me on the mini pill instead. For me, there's nothing I can really do for them. I take some Advil or Excedrin, lay down with a mask over my eyes and stay hydrated. Do you have prescription medication for your migraines?

I don't get migraines before O but I always get one before or during AF. I am a normal headache sufferer so I don't normally take anything for a tension headache or a more mild migraine but for those really bad migraines, I take an excedrin migraine and chug water like there is no tomorrow.

Sleeping doesn't help me but I do have to lay down and put pressure on my eyes. for some reason if I sleep with a migraine - I will wake up with it too.

I know there are a couple migraine sufferers out there on HB. I've been one since I was 10 and my triggers are usually stress or diet (like eating too much dairy).

I went off BCP three months ago to get ready to TTC and have consistently had a migraine the day before I ovulate each cycle. It's weird because my migraines have never been triggered by hormones. They have also been some of the most debilitating migraines I've ever had. Is this normal? Does anyone else get hormonal migraines? What do you do?
