I've had migraines since childhood, but mine are mainly related to scent allergy (ambergris) and food sensitivity (avocado/shellfish). I have also previously suffered from hormone related migraines, but in the last 5 years they have been far and few between (thankfully!). This pregnancy I've had 2 full blown migraines so far (25 weeks along) with aura, pain and nausea. I'm guessing they're hormone related but keeping tabs on it :(

I'm not pregnant, but I'm on vitamin B complex, fish oil, and magnesium to prevent them. My doctor said I can stay on all of them if I get pregnant. Talk to your doctor to see if you can take them too. Good luck!

I was pretty liberal with caffeine in pregnancy, as well as rapid release Tylenol with hot beverages as soon as I felt them coming on. I kept those gel ice packs in the freezer - like 4 of them - at all times and threw one over my eyes and put one on the base of my neck and laid down in a cold dark room (or under my desk at work).

My OBGYN said that a small, dense, healthy snack that combines sugar/protein/fat together in one shot can really help with pregnancy headaches so I started drinking frozen smoothies once or twice a day between meals (Greek yogurt, coconut oil, frozen fruit) and those actually helped a lot! The frequency went down tremendously.

i have a history of migraines too and got them under control by taking better care of myself (sleeping and eating better). And now when i do get them, i can see the connection when i have them of what may have caused one. And i also went to a specialist at one point who gave me some meds to break the migraine cycle. that was all years ago, and while i still get them on occasion, i deal with rest, lying in the dark and advil. Then when i was pregnant with my first LO, i got sooo many migraines in my second trimester (some that would last for several days at a time) and i kind of figured that my thresholds for my usual triggers were much lower. Like i would get a migraine after being out in the summer heat and not drinking enough water - but after a much shorter period than i was used to non-pregnant. So it got a better when i made the effort to stay out of the sun, not to exert myself exercising, get decent sleep and food, and drink a lot of water.

Now being pregnant with number 2, they started coming back last week and i had 2 horrible ones the way you described and then for a week it had this constant tension headache. So basically i totally sympathize, but i think again my solution has to be to take extra good care and get good sleep every night, drinks tons of water and don't be in front of a computer screen too much (which is hard at work). I haven't talked to my doctor or midwife yet about it, i forgot to actually because i was feeling okay my appointment yesterday but i can't imagine they say to take anything other than tylenol.

I think keeping de-stressed and relaxed is essential. It's tough because if i wasn't pregnant, i would be practically drinking the advil liquid gels when i have a migraine and now i can't, so i have to learn to take it easy instead. I find even go for daily walks helps me to de-stress and feel better and take a break from the computer at work.

i hope you find something that helps, you have my sympathy!

eta. i agree with others that caffeine helps too.

I was having bad, but not migraine, headaches earlier in my pregnancy. My midwife suggested a little caffeine and that has helped a lot. She also suggested chiropractic care could help--but the headache problem was solved before I made it to the chiropractor!

Yours sound worse than mine, but I have had a lot of borderline migraine type headaches this pregnancy. Tylenol and a small coke often help enough to at least take the edge off. Mine are often sinus related so my midwife did say I could take sudafed sparingly from second trimester on, though I haven't yet. I did see a chiropractor and I think that helped some. Last pregnancy I did several sessions of acupuncture and I think that really helped, but I don't have childcare and it would be more trouble than seems worth it to try to do that now.

It really really sucks. I wish I had a better answer.

Oh and I'm sure you already know to stay hydrated. I have had days where I feel like if I force down one more glass of water I'll throw up and it hasn't seemed to make a big difference.

since you had them previously, you might have tried this already, but have you tried chiropractic care for your migraines? it's not an instant fix, but after a couple months of regular care, i didn't have debilitating headaches anymore and after years of care, i rarely get small headaches now. sorry you're feeling this way. headaches/migraines are the pits.

@littlebug: I had migraines throughout pregnancy and I finally decided that if my doc said Tylenol was ok, Tylenol was ok. I was miserable and taking Extra Strength Tylenol and going home early to lay down in a dark room really helped. Fortunately I had a job that was very flexible and understanding.
I think if you're pregnant and tell your boss you're not feeling well, it would be pretty shocking for them to tell you to stay and suck it up. But maybe I've just been lucky with my employers!

I have had migraines for years, once getting to the point where I was having them daily until I went to a special Headache Clinic in Philly. After treatment with various meds, they were well under control. During my first pregnancy, they went away completely, and didn't come back until I stopped breastfeeding at 14m. At that point, they started coming back monthly, pretty much timed with getting my period, whereas previously they'd never been related to my hormones.

ANYWAY. I'm now 15w pregnant and have been having borderline-migraine-strength headaches almost every day. For a while i just thought it was 1st trimester stuff, then I had a terrible head cold, but they're still lingering and I'm miserable. They start as a dull ache in the morning and just ramp up all day long. Tylenol doesn't even touch them.

I tried Imitrex previously and I didn't like it. I've heard Fioricet is safe for pregnancy. I don't even really like taking Tylenol when I'm pregnant, but I'm nearing desperation. I'm exhausted and tired of feeling crappy. What did your doctor suggest or prescribe for migraines?
