@hilsy85: Mine are truly awful this time around. Besides caffeine, Tylenol and sleep, my midwives recommended a mix of peppermint oil and lavender oil, applied to your temples. Tiger Balm also works well for me. Or, apply a cold compress to your head/back of your neck, and a heating pad on your feet - this draws excess blood away from your head.
Hope they get better soon!

@Trufflehunter: yeah when it's throbbing it's pretty unbearable--all I can do is screw up my eyes and wait for it to pass. Thank goodness it's not at that level constantly, it comes and goes. Ugh I can't imagine 3 days of it!!

@hilsy85: with the noise sensitivity too it could be migraine. It's the worst waking up and the headache is still there :( I feel you. I've had the headaches you have described and not considered them to be migraine but I 'm certainly not a doctor. I guess I just think of migraine as being probably around a 7-8 out of 10 pain score with nausea/light or noise sensitivity. I once had a headache that lasted for about 3 days and I eventually had accupuncture in my head and that gave immediate, short term relief.

@Trufflehunter: hmm I don't really have any nausea with them, but definitely sound sensitivity (my LO's whining/crying is like nails on a chalkboard!). I just emailed my doctor...they do tend to linger if I don't take something--I had one all day yesterday and woke up with pain at 6:30 this morning :( luckily a combo of tylenol, coffee, and a lot of water seems to be helping right now. Does it just sound like bad headache then?

@mrsjyw: ugh that is awful :( I am glad they are easing up for you!!

No, that doesn't sound like a migraine. Migraine is characterised by some of the things you mentioned as well as nausea or vomiting or light or noise sensitivity. Basically with a migraine it's impossible to function normally. Most over the counter analgesics won't touch the pain and it will last 4 hr to several days.

It would be best to speak to your doctor, nevertheless because having any kind of headache lingering for days is awful and there might be some drugs that can be taken in pregnancy to minimise the pain. I always find the only thing that really works apart from drugs is a dark room with no noise and try to sleep through it, although sometimes it's impossible to sleep it's that bad :(

Ugh I'm so sorry!

I suffer from migraines in and out of pregnancy. Pregnancy migraines have just eased up for me in the last couple of weeks. They lasted from week 18-24? this time around and I think it was similar with A.

Anyway, aside from Tylenol on really bad non-functioning days, NOTHING worked aside from ice water, ice pack on the back of my neck, and lying down. :\ I hope it passes quickly for you!

I didn't start getting migraines until I was in my second trimester and they lasted about a month for me. I didn't take Tylenol as I didn't find it very helpful. Coffee helped me for a while and then at night I would soak my feet in hot water with a cold compress on my neck. Weird trick but it helped some for me. I also made sure to drink lots of water

@hilsy85: Oh man dealing with a kiddo, pregnancy, and a migraine sounds rough!

I've had migraines since I was a teenager (although mine actually went away during pregnancy!). This is probably totally unscientific but my grandma always swore a can of regular Coke helped her migraines more than anything else. I think the combo of caffeine plus sugar plus carbonation plus the cold can is some sort of migraine magic. Coffee makes mine worse.

Other less 'grandma'-ish things that help me are drinking a TON of water and an ice pack or cold wash cloth on my head. My doctor also recommended taking magnesium supplements, although honestly I haven't noticed a huge difference. Hope you feel better soon!

@hilsy85: Ah yeah, that makes it way more difficult! I was working and pregnant with my first, so I could easily sneak out and lie down. I forget if you have family that could maybe come over for a couple of hours so you can lie down? Although I guess it would be last minute since you'd need it when a headache strikes :-( Tough situation! Sorry and hope your doc can give you some good advice!

@SweetiePie: I wish I could lay down! Being flat and having my eyes closed helps. Unfortunately I am alone with LO during the week while DH is at work :( I will definitely call my OB as soon as the office opens today. Thanks!

I got them and it was awful! Honestly the only thing that helped was leaving work and laying down in a dark room with a cold washcloth and drinking tons of water. I did in a few moments of desperation take Tylenol and it worked to dull it a little.
Ask your doc! I just take their lead - if you're getting them every day and nothing else is working, and he/she says that Tylenol When needed is ok, I would just trust in them! They aren't in the business of harming pregnant ladies or their babies :-)

I don't think I have migraines but I've gotten a lot more headaches with this pregnancy. I've just tried to drink more and eat more fruit and that seems to help.

I didn't have this happen but my old co-worker did. Unfortunately it was the whole pregnancy for her. It was very debilitating and she got on some medication from her doctor. Not sure what it was. If it continues to be an issue you may want to ask your doctor.

So I've never had these before, but I"m having what I'm pretty sure are migraines--throbbing intense pain in the sides of my head, gets worse with physical exertion or change of position (like sitting to standing, or turning my head sharply). Comes and goes but I can always kind of "feel it" lingering in the background. Does that sound like a migraine?

If so what do you do about them during pregnancy? I don't like the idea of taking Tylenol daily (although it does seem to help). I drink 1 cup of caffeinated coffee a day, so I don't think caffeine is the answer...I also thought they were supposed to get better in 2nd tri. I'm 15.5 weeks :(
