@Glitter: there are definitely international moving/relocation services! DH's job paid for our two moves, but we had to get the quotes ourselves from the companies and then DH's job picked the quote they would pay for. Depending on how much stuff you are moving, you will probably need a container. We moved a 900sq foot apartment from the US to Europe and the moving company packed everything and shipped it via container. The fees included the move as well as insurance and duty fees. It took about 7 weeks to arrive. Our second international move was within Europe and the moving company just trucked everything. If you aren't moving furniture, just household essentials, you could ship it via air freight, which is quite costly, but may be worth it to you. I think we paid about $400 to ship 1 cubic meter via air freight, but again, that was within Europe and it was a moving company that handled the logistics of it.

@Glitter: If you're flying in from the Caribbean, definitely don't buy a ton of stuff first. The time of year you will be coming has lots of good large consignment sales for most of your baby gear. Also, the apts. on campus are tiny, so you won't know exactly what's going to fit if that's where you end up.

@gracecat: Good point, as I do believe we'll be living in a smaller place than our current home.

@scg00387: that looks like a really good solution actually. It's small and cheap and looks sturdy. Gonna suggest it to DH. We live in the Caribbean - it is hot all year round so yes the weather would be quite an adjustment for us.

@lamariniere: since we're flying in from the Caribbean no there would be no moving company. I've never heard of international moving companies... I doubt we have that service available to us.

I think it depends. DS is 2.5 and we have moved 3 times since he was born, two of the moves were international. We purchased a bed and stroller before he was born, so we had to move those things when he was 2 months old. Are you hiring a moving company or DIY? If it is a moving company, I would say buy what you want. If you DIY, go for minimal.

@Arden: where are you moving to? Not to thread jack, but we also did 2 international moves within the last 18 months. I would be happy to answer any moving questions if you want to wall me.

@Glitter: We moved to a different state when LO was 4 weeks - I used this for the first two months or so http://www.amazon.com/Summer-Infant-Sleeper-Portable-Bedding/dp/B005ASKQ42/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1380600957&sr=8-3&keywords=summer+infant+travel+bed It folds up so that you could feasibly stick it in a suitcase!

I would buy the absolute minimum if I were you, packing is such a hassle! Where do you live now/will the weather be much different?

@looch: Totally off topic, but did you ship your items via container ship personally? Like, did you hire the company or was it through work or something?
I'm looking into how we're going to make our international move next year and would LOVE some info on it. We've always just done a couple checked bags each and that's it, but now we have a lot more to bring.

We moved halfway across the country when our daughter was 4 months old. Up until then we just had her sleep in a Pack n Play in our room. We ordered the crib to our new house to assemble when we moved in. It worked out great!

I would wait, as long as you can still get stuff in kY for the prices you want. We moved when DD was four months to a much smaller place with less counter space and a different layout so I wish we had waited.

@Glitter: I have done the move both with and without my son. He's almost 3 but was just turning 2 when we moved last November.

I have also travelled with my pack and play, via air. I have both stuck it in a checked bag and carried it in the travel bag as checked luggage. It is also good for other trips, in case you need to go and visit family, for example, so I would get a very basic one and use that.

@evansjamie: How cool!! And thanks so much for the offer! We're moving for DH to complete school and will most likely be living on campus, but I'm sure I'll have loads to ask you in the months ahead :):)

Good point on the size though. I'm liking the pack'n'play but it won't be able to fit into our current bedroom either. Still undecided about whether we want LO to sleep in our room or the spare bedroom for the first few months.

@Glitter: Awesome! I live in Louisville, let me know if you need any advice when looking for a neighborhood or anything! Winter hasn't been bad the past few years, but they are predicting a harsher one for this year, so we'll see.

As for the Moses basket, it is smaller, yes. Our bedroom isn't very big so we wouldn't be able to fit a pack & play in it with our bed without being tight on space. Our LO should be able to sleep in it for a few months. The stand rocks and it's very light and easy to move between rooms. The stand can be compact, but the basket won't break down well.

I just did an international move and my recommendation is to buy what you need when you get settled.

It's a lot easier than having to ship stuff, not sure how your stuff is travelling, so take that into consideration as well! My stuff came via container ship, took about 6 weeks.

@Rubies: The pack'n'play looks very versatile! Is it easy/ small enough to travel on a plane with?

@evansjamie: We will be moving to Louisville. I've never been there before.. neither have I ever experienced winter so I really hope we do like it!

I just googled the Moses basket and stand. Is it for sleeping overnight or just to lay the baby in while you're up and about? It looks very cute but quite small.

First of all, I hope you like KY! Do you know what area you're moving to? There are several bees here.

Second, my baby is still cooking, but we bought stuff that was small and easy to move. I generally don't disassemble things when I move, but I also haven't moved cross-country. We've got a Moses basket and stand, a travel swing, and a Jenny Lind crib that will be easy to take apart if we need to move down the line. Everything else in the room has moved before (dresser, bookshelf, glider) and we only take the shelves out of the bookcase.

Good luck!

DH and I plan to migrate in August 2014. LO is due in May 2014. We are migrating to KY which is approximately 2400 miles from where we now live.

So, the question is, should we purchase a crib and other big items before or after we move? Can a baby be comfortable in a bassinet for three months? Should we buy things that can easily be broken down and packed into a box or something, so we can ship them across when we move? What do we absolutely need in the three months before the move?
