Its great to hear all these stories! I guess I'm not concerned that shes not sitting right now (heck she just rolled over last week), but I am worried that if we don't "practice" with her she will be delayed in meeting the milestone.

@Andrea: @pelikila: A bouncer is a great idea, and our high chair does have a great recline as well (Peg Perego Diner). We will have to try that for eating. We are just trying to practice and play with food right now since I want to make sure I can still BF.

My son is 9 months. He's been able to sit on his own since about 6 months without falling over. He still can't get to a sitting position on his own. He hasn't really tried to pull up on anything to get to a sitting or standing position. He sits in the tub and to play now, but before that I just showered or took a bath with him. Also 4.5 months is still early for solids, so I wouldn't worry about that.
They do things in their own time frame. My pediatrician hasn't had any concerns with DS growth and milestones and he's been a tad on the slow side for most of the physical ones (rolling, crawling, sitting). I'd check with your pediatrician if you are concerned though.

LO is almost 5 months old and she sits by herself for a few moments until she loses her balance and topples over. No worries - I've never known a kid who didn't know how to sit! ;) LO is still young - she'll go it when she wants!

My lo is a little over 5 months and isn't sitting. She wants to and tries very hard, but just isn't there yet. She is still in the reclining thing in the tub. I wouldn't worry about it yet, your baby is still young.

charlie could stay in a sitting position around 6 months if we put him there, but he couldn't get to a sitting position on his own until he was 7 months. your lo is still very young so i wouldn't worry!

She doesn't have reflux, does she? Baby Y was never much for sitting until right then, when he grew out of it. Until then, he looved standing all the time.

But I agree - don't worry. Most babies meet some milestones at very different paces, and lots happens developmentally between 4 and 6 months!

We would put my son in a sit and he was able to support himself right at 6 months. He wasn't able to put himself into a sit until he was 9.5 months or so.

In terms of feeding solids, does your highchair recline so it is more of an angle like a bouncer? That might be an option to try. Or use a bouncer if you have one.

Does she like sitting in a bouncer? You could feed her there in the meantime instead of a high chair maybe?

My LO was crawling before she wanted to sit up on her own! She just had no interest in doing so and it was after 6 months until she would sit on her own. But she was OK in the high chair before that.

Oh. my LO used to ALWAYS arch her back too. Probably up until she was about 4 months old. But she grew out of it.

I wouldn't worry about your LO meeting the sitting up milestone. We would sit our little one up on our laps, on the couch, etc. But she didn't start sitting up unassisted on her own til she was about 8 months old. Which is fine.
I would just follow your LO's cues. You don't wanna rush her into anything. :)

How many months old was your baby when they sat up? I think the norm is between 4-6 months which is a big range.

My LO is only 4.5 months old, but she really doesn't like sitting up even on our laps. She throws herself backwards or wants to stand up. As soon as we lay her down or stand her up shes fine. This is now impacting starting solids because she gets frustrated sitting in the high chair. Also, bath time is quite the chore because she obviously can't lay down in the tub and she is horrible at sitting.

Did it take a lot of practice to help baby learn to sit? I am so afraid she won't meet the milestone because she won't practice with us. It also doesn't help that I don't know how much practice she gets sitting up at daycare.
