@PurplePeony: The blue ice blocks (not ice packs, the actual plastic blocks) they sell at Target (and I am sure other places) work extremely well. I put two of the medium-sized blocks in a cooler bag with my milk and it stayed almost completely frozen for 10 hours on my trip from the east coast to CA.

I would freeze as much as possible and freeze it in bags. Those will transport easiest. This was a tip I was given from an LC who had a patient with the same conundrum! If you pack them with ice and an ice pack, they will get home still slushy and will be fine for refreezing. As long as the milk is in slush form, it is refreezable.

Take it as a carry-on. They will check the bag and the contents but hopefully won't feel the need to open each bag. Good luck!

@PurplePeony: I agree, definitely freeze as much as you can and when you get home decide if you need to use the next day or re-freeze if there are still ice crystals.

I would suggest not checking it, but thats up to you. Your cooler bag is for a "medical liquid" so it doesn't count against your carry on. If you have it with you at the airport, you can always ask the food vendors for extra fresh ice.

@Foodnerd81: good to know! My total travel time will probably be 7-7.5 hours. I'm staying at a Residence Inn so there is a real fridge/freezer combo in the room, not a mini fridge. So the milk will be properly frozen. I guess a bonus is that it's a lot easier to pack the bags when they're frozen flat than when the milk is liquid!

@PurplePeony: I flew cross country with a small amount of frozen milk and a couple of ice packs in a cooler and they were all still mostly frozen when I got home- it was nearly ten hours freezer to freezer. But it was from a proper freezer not a mini fridge. I hope it works out!

If you end up shipping with dry ice put a layer of cardboard between milk storage bags and dry ice. Dry ice can cause the bags to get brittle and break.

@nadsia: ooh, I didn't realize that! Good to know. I can also use a couple bags for DD's daycare bottles on Friday, so at least that's something.

All right, I think I'm gonna do it...will report back on how it goes.

@ElbieKay: @matador84: I looked into it but overnight shipping is almost $150!! And it will get home much faster with me than with a shipping company. I tried to see if dry ice is available near where I'm staying and didn't come up with anything (it's permitted on planes with proper labeling). My current plan is to put it in my cooler, then double-bag with one of those silver "hot/cold" bags you can get at grocery stores, then put it in my checked bag. I'm leaning toward just freezing the milk and hoping it stays frozen until I get home but once I stick it in the freezer there's no going back, so I'm dithering a bit.

Kellymom says if there all still ice crystals you can safely refreeze so I would freeze all of it and stick it in freezer when you get home.

Ugh. I have the chance to go on a 4-day trip for work to Las Vegas in October and was wondering logistics of this also!

Could you pump, freeze and put on dry ice and ship like pp suggested?

I have never needed to try this, but I have heard that you can put it on dry ice and ship it overnight.

I'm currently on a business trip so I'm pumping and need together my milk back home safely. Thing is, I'm away for four days and my milk usually starts to go funky after three. I'm lucky to have a full-sized fridge with a real freezer in my hotel room so I can easily freeze milk, but I'm worried about getting it home without melting (4.5 hour flight plus all the extra time needed to get to the airport, get home, etc). I have a cooler and I'm planning to put it in my checked bag because the cargo area usually stays pretty cool. But still...

Anyway, should I: a) freeze it all and hope for the best, b) freeze a couple of the oldest bags I'm worried will go bad, and know I might have to sacrifice them as just extra ice packs in the cooler because they'll probably start to melt, or c) something else? Fortunately I have a decent freezer stash so it's not a disaster if I lose the milk, but I'd rather not lose it if I can avoid it.
