@lemondrop: Ahhhhh, pizza!!! Gonna talk to DH tonight and see what he says. :) Thanks for the tips!

@cascademom: We went to Milwaukee a few years ago (we went to the 105th for Harley Davidson) and it was a lot of fun. It'd be nice to get 2 cities for 1 vacay by going to Madison too!

@babyjmama: Totally thought about Branson too!!

Thanks for all the recommendations! Now I have to get my act together and pick! :)

Omaha is pretty awesome! It's a little farther but I really love weekend getaways to Branson, MO. tons of fun stuff to do and the Ozark valley is gorgeous scenery!

@cascademom: Milwaukee is a good one, Madison is too! They are only an hour and a half apart. In Madison, Henry Vilas zoo is free, and the college campus is a blast right on the lake, there is a great botanical garden too.

Fun thread, I love reminiscing old vacations!

@lemondrop: Chicago slow! I love it. I probably was Chicago slow last summer when I was due with my LO. I probably irritated other residents with how slow I was.

Don't forget about Milwaukee. There's breweries, festivals, the art museum. It's a pretty fun town.

@Ash: Yes! Shedd aquarium was fabulous, we also ate at the great deep dish pizza places- a starving preggo's dream. We also checked out Wrigley field and Mag Mile. It was fun, but so exhausting, I'd do it again, just not in November... too cold!

@scg00387: Great idea!!!!!!!! And yes, you are right. I am just wanting a real vacation lol!!

@lemondrop: Hahahaha! I've already started walking slow and I'm only 19 weeks. Imagine what will happen when I'm further along. The museums in Chicago just sound like so much fun!

@Ash: I did Chicago at 31 weeks, the walking was pretty rough, but it was also cold which made it way harder. We have a definition for walking slow in our house since then, we call it "Chicago slow." It was amazing how slow I moved then.

Just pace yourself, work in time for breaks, regular meals, and afternoon naps.

@Ash: St. Louis zoo is my fav in the Midwest! The food there is awesome too. FWIW I was a nov 2012 mama and I would've hated flying in September and all the secondhand smoke in Vegas would've given me the willies.

@wonderstruck: I used to live in Chicago - love visiting but don't know of any Amtrak stations around here. Although there is one close to my mom that we could drive to in Illinois. :)

@scg00387: Never been to either! The drive to Omaha would be a drag but I love the zoo!!

@ms.janedoe: Oh man, totally laughing about Dwight's beet farm and I've never even seen the episode. I have family in MN but it's been about 5 years since we've been up there. Any touristy ideas?

@lemondrop: lol! I'll have to see how far of a drive that would turn out to be. Seems far but it sounds fun!!

So, on a whim, I just checked Allegiant Air for a trip to Vegas for 2 - 4 nights 5 days, flight & hotel = $600-700. But will I want to fly/walk in September (due in November)? Decisions.

Flee to the Cleve! Sorry, I've always wanted to say that!

Cleveland is great, there is so much family oriented stuff to do- Metroparks area has a zoo and tons of bike/walking trails, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (I could spend days in there!), catch an Indians baseball game at The Jake (I refuse to call it anything else), there's a great farmer's market, Great Lakes brewery, Iron Chef Michael Symon has several restaurants there- so good!

We have a family wedding nearby later this year, so we are basing ourselves there.

Another vote for MN though! ;)

Depending on what part of Iowa you're in, Amtrak has several stations in Iowa where you could take the train to Chicago, then just get a hotel downtown and you can walk most places. That's something my family likes to do on vacations, we check out Navy Pier, the Magnificent Mile, the aquarium and museums, etc.

Come visit in MN! Mr. T wants to start having people come stay here on the farm for "agri-tourism." ;)

We love the state park camper cabins in SD. They are cheap, and nice. MN has some, too, now. There are usually lots of other interesting things within driving distance.

So one of the things I'm going to do to kill time before next Friday is plan a mini vacation for DH and I. I'd love to be able to drive somewhere for a few days (or a 3 day weekend). We're in Iowa. Any ideas on the cheap?
