The school I would like her to go to only does 15 minutes of recess per day and they do P.E. three times a week for 45 minutes. I definitely don't think it's enough, but I don't know what kind of active moving they do the other parts of the day.

Our 4th-8th graders get 15 min a day, and PE daily for a quarter. Most other schools in our district have PE once a week, yearlong.

My state has a recommendation of 150 minutes a week instructional physical education but it expressly says they don't have to. I also live in the state that says schools aren't required to teach kids to read and write though so no shocker there.

I can't find anything official on the school website but from talking to friends with older kids it sounds like 40 minutes of recess (2 twenty minute sessions) and gym class weekly.

@T.H.O.U.: interesting! For my state it only says you must have PE but there isn't a required # associated with it

It looks like this lists the state laws: http://www.nasbe.org/healthy_schools/hs/bytopics.php?topicid=1110

@Mamaof2: Yes thats what they have too, specialty wheel type activities. I'm guessing they have to be counting recess as the PE time to get around the law. Or the teacher in the classroom is spending time on literal Physical Education (how the body works, nutrition etc maybe)?

Kindergarten at the school DS will be attending has 2 recess times - 20 minutes in the morning and 35 minutes in the afternoon. Then they have 90 minutes of lunch/recess/rest time in the middle of the day. They also have a formal PE class (30 minutes each) twice a week.

From 1st-2nd grade, they get the same schedule as kinder except lunch/recess is 50 minutes (they cut the rest time out).

Grades 3-5 then get the same schedule as kinder except 45 minutes for lunch and recess.

recess is 30 mins and PE 1 time per week

I don't know how they would fit PE in everyday - I assume recess would be included in the 120 mins per week
Every day they have a specialty - PE, art, library, quest and cant remember the 5th one

What does your elementary school offer for recess versus PE per day? I found our Kindergarten schedule online (we aren't there yet) which showed 30 minutes of recess and a PE class once a week.

However, I just read state law that says all grades K-5 must have 120 minutes per week of PE (at least 30 minutes consecutive per day). I was reading the law because there is a new bill being passed around that would also require 100 minutes per week (at least 20 minutes consecutive per day) of recess.

I'm guessing right now they are counting recess as "Physical Education"? So maybe this would up the free play to 50 minutes?
