We just saw the doctor for constipation, but my kiddo is a little older, almost 6. She told us expect him to be on miralax for 3-6 months. We do half a cap a day and he sits on the toilet every evening before bed. 90% of the time this is when he goes. The goal is to get one soft poop a day. Since he’s been constipated for awhile, it will take time for his colon to get back to normal and for him to get the right signals that he needs to poop.

She did say that we may have to play with the dosage. Sometimes half a cap is too much or not enough. If he has a heavy cheese day (like pizza night) we give him a double dose.

Has anyone done this with a potty trained kiddo? He’s so unpredictable with his poops but i feel like it’s confusing to have him back in pull-ups. Any way to predict how soon he’ll go?

I found a thing from our children’s hospital that said do 2tsp twice a day for 3 days to kind of reboot their system, then 2tsp a day going forward. W is 22 months and we did 2tsp a day for 3 months then cut him down to 1, going up to 1.5 if he didn’t go the day before. I asked his paediatrician and she said that it won’t hurt them to be on it long term and it’s way better than being constipated. We also do it in yogurt instead of juice because I find it’s a lot easier to get it into him - he’s always willing to eat half a dozen spoonfuls of yogurt.

@macintosh: we usually have to do the miralax for a few days but it really helps and then once we get to a good spot it’s just trying to keep it there

Thanks all. I gave him 2 tsp in juice tonight and he didn’t quite drink it all. Then he did that thing where he acts like he’s about to poop standing up but “doesn’t have to go” when I get him on the potty. I guess we’re back to pull-ups at daycare until it’s sorted out.

We do a teaspoon a day when DD can't go for a few days. Not sure, but I think it helps. The big problem is I usually give it with dinner, and often I forget... We've also tried a spoonful of olive oil in the morning before breakfast (seems to work).

I just dump some into the cover to measure so like enough for a little pile in the bottom but not covering the whole bottom. It’s very exact :silly:

We give DD 1.5-2 teaspoons everyday. It seems like a lot but she's miserable if we try to back off a little.

We had to do a clean out at 3 after a long time of trouble we didn’t totally recognize at the time. Then we went to half a cap a day maintenance. This past year she’s really started eating better and we do half a cap every other day. Experimenting is your best option since every kid is different. Good luck!

My DD gets 1 tsp and my DS gets 1.5 tsp, each morning in 6oz water. It's just a stool softener (draws water into the bowel) and not a stimulant laxative, so their bodies shouldn't become dependent on it.

Pretty much exact same boat as you. Last Christmas we had a really bad bout and had to do the ‘clean out’. But I think the dose was too high after as he got too loose so we stopped. We are now potty training and he’s been holding it so we started again. We are doing 1 tsp daily (1/3 of a dose) and it seems to be just the right amount. I found it takes about 3 days to see the effect so I would start with less and wait, then increase if it isn’t enough. It’s really helped and I plan to continue it for the foreseeable future. He gets it in a cup of 1/2 water 1/2 apple juice each morning.

My daughter is younger, she's just turned 1, and we started doing 3 teaspoons a day until she'd had regular, soft bowel movements for a week. Then we backed off to 1.5 teaspoons. This seems to be working for "maintenance." It was the advice her doctor gave but seems to line up pretty well with that chart. The pediatrician told us since it's not a laxative her body won't become dependent on it to poop and eventually when she's eating a better/more varied diet or her digestive system matures even more we should be able to stop it. Giving a little Miralax once a day is way better than watching her struggle and cry in agony!!

DS is 2.5, potty trained and struggling with constipation. I took him to the dr last month and she recommended Senekot, which doesn’t even have a children’s formula. I tired Miralax once before but I must have given him too much.

I’ve been managing it with Culturelle Regularity and fiber gummies, which clearly isn’t enough. This morning he peed his pants twice and finally pooped his pants. He cries when he has to use the potty cause he’s scared to poop.

If you have used Miralax to manage chronic constipation in a young child, how often and how much did you give?
