@Lilbear: Great! I'm glad it turned out okay. Yeah I would definitely stick it out because it's awesome to not have to think about birth control and my periods are super regular but it's only the tiniest spotting for a few days. No cramps or anything. And I used to have the worst flow and cramps!

@turquoisemama: this is so weird, but by the time my appointment happened, the strings were back to their normal length again, and the doctor said that everything looks like it's still in place! She thinks that maybe the string length changed due to my cervix changing as a result of where I was at in my menstrual cycle (which still hasn't restarted yet post baby, so maybe I'll be getting my period soon?) she convinced me to stick with the Mirena as apparently I'm on the cusp of being done with the initial side effects (nonstop spotting etc). I really want the Mirena to work for me, because then no/light period and effective birth control features sound amazing.

She also said that because the Mirena gives out a low dose hormone, it doesn't have to be in the perfect position inside your uterus to still be 100% effective.

okay so I finally got in touch with my doctor and I will be seeing her tomorrow! The strings were always about a 1/2 inch long, and it really freaked me out when they were suddenly 1.5-2 inches long. I tried to pull it out but couldn't get a good grip on the strings. Weirdly enough, this morning it feels like it's only about 1 inch long. Either way, it is definitely out of place and my doctor will be taking it out tomorrow. I can't wait for this to be over!

I pulled out both a paragard and mirena myself, at home. It wasn't difficult or painful, kind of like removing a tampon. My doctor was not concerned or worried when I told her.

Have you checked the strings before? I would err on the side of caution and see your doctor so they can check the placement. I mostly say that because my IUD was coming out (actually, I'm not certain that it was properly inserted, but that's beside the point), and I could definitely feel the hard part, but when they tried to take it out it broke in my cervix because one of the arms imbedded itself in the cervical canal like a splinted. I ended up having to get surgery to get it out (and they couldn't even then). BUT the chances of something that extreme happening are VERY VERY slim, all parts of it (coming out, strings breaking, body itself breaking, etc), but I would err on the side of caution and let your doctor take a look.

@turquoisemama: if an iud is coming out, then the cervix is more open than the normal "soft close", thus allowing more access for bacteria and debris to enter the uterus. As a medical device, the recommended removal procedure is by a medical professional. Safety first, that's all.

@Mrs. Microscope: Isnt the cervix always open a little? How would this be different than sex or foreplay? Not to be argumentative, just curious.

@Lilbear: I would personally pull it out only if you could feel the plastic part. But that's just me. I took mine out because the cramps were so bad for like a full month. My doctor actually praised me for taking it out myself. I'm pretty sure they are very flexible and won't cause damage unless it has implanted itself.

Keep your fingers away! If the iud is coming out, your cervix is opening a bit to let it pass, and you don't want dirt and bacteria from your fingers to get in your uterus and cause infection! A doctor uses a sterile forceps to grab the strings. So wait until Monday and get checked out. If it comes out on its own, fine. But stop reaching up there, because an infection could be very dangerous!

@MenagerieMama: I'm pretty sure I can feel the tip of the plastic part, but I'm not 100% sure. I know you should be able to feel the strings - they have always been about. 1/2 inch long. Right now they feel like they are somewhere between 1.5-2 inches long. It is definitely slipping out. I'm having mild cramps now too which is kind of freaking me out!

Is it just the strings or do you feel the plastic part? Having strings hanging out of your cervix is normal.

@turquoisemama: @AB810: do you think I should just pull this out myself? That would save a lot of time and hassle! I'm just scared it'll somehow get caught on its way out and cause some sort of damage.!

I actually had two IUDs expel. The first one I didn't really notice until it was mostly out, but the second I was cramping once it was further down and it got to the point where I could feel the plastic tip. I pulled it the rest of the way out at that point. Just an FYI, if you have one expel you are more likely to expel subsequent IUDs. It never hurt more than period cramps for me.

So the strings are coming out of your vagina or your cervix? You should be able to feel the string when it's in place. You shouldn't be able to feel anything hard though. I would not freak out unless you have any kind of pain or bleeding. I took my own IUD out the first time I had it and it popped out like a tampon. That's how the doctor does it. I think the only reason it is a worry is if it's implanted in your uterus at all. Either way use backup birth control until you contact your doctor.

I had a Mirena iud inserted almost 3 months ago and it is totally falling out right now! I just checked the strings and there is about 1.5" of string hanging out. I am not in any pain and plan to call my doctor in the morning. Does anyone have any experience with this? Does it hurt on its way out? Of course my gyno is not opened until Monday, but I plan to call their emergency line.
