I had zero side effects from Mirena. But had crazy weight gain & crazy emotions on BC pills when I was in college so I decided it was not worth it just to have less painful periods. I hope you can find a solution that works for you. Migraines are no fun!

As an aside, part of what you are describing sounds like rebound headaches that are caused from an overuse of any medication. I went through this issue with my migraines (I had a migraine from Week 16-Week 21 while pg). You really should seek alternative therapy(ies) in order to put a stop to any rebound headaches (you may have more of these than you imagine) and to help with your current migraines (I took a combination of Benadryl and Fioricet while pg).

I have had zero side effects from my Mirena also, not even spotting.

Did your doctor say she thought it was from the Mirena? Is there maybe another cause?

I have the Mirena for the second time now and I love it. I have zero side effects with mine. Even the spotting stopped so I'm all good with it.

I actually went on Mirena because the higher level of hormones in regular birth control were causing my migraines. I saw a specialist and was put on prescription migraine medicine. I weaned off before having the Mirena placed. For me, the Mirena did not cause migraines like other BC did. The specialist told me some of my migraines could have been from "withdrawal" due to taking so much over the counter headache medicine (before I was put on the prescription). Hope you get this resolved, migraines are wretched.

I had serious emotional instability on my last BCP. It took having what was essentially an emotional break down in my bathroom to give them up and look for another form of birth control that wasn't hormonal. When I first started taking BCP I never had any side effects so it was strange that I suddenly started getting them.

Would you be interested in depo or the nuva ring?

Over the past few months I've been experiencing an increasingly frequent amount of headaches/migraines (usually the latter). I went from getting migraines right before I started my period and when a front was moving in to getting them weekly, and now am getting them 4-5 times a week.

Besides some occasional spotting this is really the only side effect I've had so far (and I assume it's a side effect, because they started more frequently after I got the Mirena).

I've gotten much better at catching them when they're still in the growing pressure stage and taking something to head them off before I end up immobile in bed, but the catch is that I've been taking Advil or Excedrin Migraine almost daily, and I often end up feeling fuzzy after (depending on how early I catch it--if I wait too long I HAVE to lie down, and that's a problem with a 10.5 month old who doesn't have an off switch).

I've talked to my doctor and she said that she can prescribe me something stronger that will work faster (and hopefully not knock me out), but it's not breast-feeding safe. I'm still nursing, and don't want to stop when I'm so close to reaching my one year goal, but as the migraines come more frequently I am growing concerned about how much run-off painkiller he might be getting from me.

I'm starting to wonder if I should have it removed. I love the idea of it, and don't really trust myself to remember to take a pill everyday. But at this cost? I don't know what the right move is here.

Did you have any really undesirable side effects from your IUD or other birth control? Did you just deal with it or end up trying something else? What was your tipping point?
