I've had both.
I can say I did gain weight with the Implanon and had to have it removed a year early because I couldn't deal with it.
Mirena I loved while I had it. Didn't have any issues at all until I had it removed.

@dharmainitiative: I was actually on Nuvaring for a while, but I bled (heavily) for like 2 months straight, I was sick (throwing up) all of the time, and it kept slipping out. It may have cleared up on it's own, but I was miserable and it all stopped when I removed it.

Thanks for all the feedback! I think I'm leaning towards Mirena over Implanon, but I'm going to read up more on Paragard (which I'd never heard of until last night).

I had Mirena prior to having LO and loved it. I had spotting/cramping for several weeks after insertion which was annoying, but once that stopped I didn't have a period for several years (woohoo!!). It's my understanding that the hormone level is less than some other methods of birth control too.

When we decided to TTC, it was easy and painless to have removed, and we conceived immediately.

I had a wonderful experience with the Mirena. Insertion hurt, but I've not yet had a baby so my cervix was closed up tight. After the first few days I felt totally normal and after four months or so said good bye to my period. I was period free for four years. The worst part of it for me was waiting for my appointment for removal when we were ready to TTC :)
Coming off of it was fine, one crazy heavy period but I became regular after that. We conceived five months later after two cycles of TTC.

I switched to ParaGard after college. It's an IUD, but uses copper rather than hormones to prevent pregnancy. My mom had breast cancer at an early age, so I wanted to limit my exposure to extra hormones. I also hadn't had a LO at that point, but although the insertion was uncomfortable, it wasn't unmanageable. My only side effect were heavier periods with more cramping than what I had experienced under the pill. Otherwise, it was great. I looooved not having to obsess about the effectiveness of the pill.

I love the idea of the mirena! No worrying about remembering anything, maybe a little spotting, but for most, after 6 months your period goes away. But I got one (I haven't had a LO, so insertion SUCKED), I was cramping after but they told me to expect to be crampy so I didn't think much of it. I ended up partially expelling it, needing to go on a antibiotics before she'd remove it (imagine sitting on a toothpick for three days...). The had to do ultrasounds to see if it had done any damage, buy it hadn't, then the doctor told me I 'had one strong little uterus to be contracting so hard, the iud was pushed out like that!' ummm ok, odd thing to say. Removal wasn't even uncomfortable. I was told what happened with me mostly happens to women who haven't given birth before, because everything is a little tight. I know at least a dozen people who have one and LOVE it though.

Dr tried to talk me into Implanon after merina fail. She seemed to really like it from a dr's point of view. But she told me side effects were irregular bleeding, not spotting but full on heavy bleeding, frequently not just at first, but the whole time. That didn't interest me at all!

I ended up back on nuvaring, but you said you havent been happy with that:( I would still try the mirena iud after having a baby even after less than awesome experience.

I personally vote for Mirena, have heard a lot of good things. I have personally had a few friends fail Implanon (got pregnant, it got infected, it fell out, it hurt, etc). I also LOVED LOVED LOVED Nuva Ring, have you thought about that?

I've never read about implanon but I have had mirena and didn't like the hormonal part of it as it made me gain weight and it did weird things after a while (it gave me pregnancy symptoms). Now I am thinking about possibly getting the paraguard since it is non-hormonal.

I had Mirena after my first baby and I loved it. Loved. I had no ill side effects and it was so freeing not taking a pill everyday. The one side effect I had was a lighter and lighter period the longer I had it.... But of course, Mirena affects everyone differently, so unfortunately it's one of those things that you won't know how it will affect you until you try it for yourself. Good luck with the upcoming baby!

So at my last prenatal appointment our midwife asked about post-partum birth control, which, to be honest, I hadn't really given much thought to yet.

DH and I are like 98% and 95% sure we only want this one McBebe (respectively), but until we're both 100% sure we don't want to make any serious long-term decisions (in this case, DH will likely eventually get snipped). In the meantime we really really don't want an oopsie baby.

With a baby I worry I'll forgot to take a pill, so I told her I'd like something that I won't have to worry about taking everyday. I've used Nuvaring before, and had some bad side effects. Bottom line isI want something that's as reliable as possible that I can't f*ck up by forgetting about. She suggested we go with either Mirena or Implanon.

I've started doing research about both of them, and was wondering if other bees would share their experiences (good and bad).

For instance I've read that Implanon can cause weight gain and hair loss. Did anyone have that experience? Did it stop your period? Did you lose your sex drive with Mirena?

What would you recommend?
