@shopaholic: my OB and LO's pediatrician thought everything I asked about trying was overboard, too, but once I'd been dealing with it for over a month, I decided I wasn't crazy. For some of us, it's just really hard to get it to go away. And I was really uncomfortable, so I was willing to try anything. I hope yours clears up soon!

I had thrush for 9 weeks - unfortunately it can be difficult to get rid of it. My LO never had symptoms, but she was on nystatin for about a month because I was worried about us passing it back and forth. The liquid is really easy to administer, but it can cause yellow staining, so be sure to use a bib or burp cloth in case some of it dribbles out of her mouth. You should also sterilize everything that goes in her mouth at least once a day, and wash clothing that touches your nipples (nursing bras) in hot water. It may be helpful for both you and baby to take probiotics. You may want to try gentian violet - put some on your nipples before you nurse to treat both of you simultaneously. It stains like crazy, so be careful. Baby wipes work pretty well to get it off skin. Other things you can try include rinsing your nipples with a solution of vinegar and water after each nursing/pumping, diflucan (though there's some debate over whether this works - if you try it, you'll need more than a single dose like you would take for a vaginal yeast infection), vaginal yeast infection treatment cream (like monistat) used on your nipples, grapefruit seed extract, and coconut oil. If your nipples are cracked or damaged at all, it's important to get them healed to help eliminate areas where the yeast grows easily. If you're using lanolin on your nipples, stop because it holds in moisture, which can encourage yeast growth. For me, the winning combination of treatments was probiotics for me and baby, coconut oil applied after each nursing/pumping, monistat applied each night, and healing my nipples by exclusively pumping for a couple weeks. Diflucan, vinegar, and gentian violet didn't seem to work for me, but everyone is different. Definitely check out kellymom.com for more info. Good luck!

We had a case of thrush and LO was formula fed. Her's came from antibiotics. She had a yeast infection in her nether region as well. We did the liquid nystatin. Her's was basically in her cheeks. I used the syringe and aimed it at her cheeks. We had to go through 1.5 prescriptions. I feel like the original prescription was for 14 days. Our doctor recommended going longer than the symptoms. Once the white was gone we went for another 5 days. We were also using the nystatin cream for her diaper area.

We've been battling thrush for over a month now. Neither of us had the classic symptoms, besides the sharp, shooting breast pain for me. I did a round of Diflucan and I was doing Nystatin for K, but I kind of stopped with that after our last pediatrician visit. He said at that appt. that he wasn't even positive if what she has is thrush, since it didn't look typical. But since the white-ish lips and a little bit of white on her tongue seemed to not change for the worse or better, he said to just keep up doing what we're doing.

I do take Grapefruit Seed Extract and Probiotics/Acidophillus for myself daily. And I use Grapefruit Seed Extract in every load of laundry now. I also stopped pumping and freezing milk. This is all so we don't get recurring cycles of it, if it is indeed thrush. I also wipe her lips and tongue with a Grapefruit Seed Extract mixture sometimes. Both the pediatrician and my OB seemed to think that all the stuff I've read on thrush are kind of overboard and I don't need to worry so much? If it gets any worse, I'll try the Gentian Violet.

@NaturallyCathy: ugh I hate thrush! We've been battling it for months. We're on the nystatin too. I probably wasn't as diligent with it because I thought it was making her gassy. She's tolerating it better but now I'm considering using gentian violet. For the nystatin I used a cotton swab to coat the white spots in her mouth.

I'm curious how others used it too.

We waited to see the doctor at Em's two month instead of making a trip a week early. Doctor confirmed it - we do have thrush. They decided to send us home with medicine so it must not be a bad case? The doc was happy with her weight gain.

She sent us home with nystatin - liquid form for Em, creme form for me. Anyone have experience giving the baby this? How long did you use it for? Did the thrush clear up?

Thrush is no joke, especially if you're breastfeeding...I think/thought I had it when LO was a few weeks old. I had major nipple/breast pain and my skin was red and shiny. I would NOT wait it out...the thing about thrush is that it will not get better on it's own, and you and LO both need to be treated, otherwise you will keep passing it back and forth to each other. It can also be very painful for babies and mamas, so I would get it taken care of. It sounds like the nurse is going to give you genetian violet, which I have heard is helpful. I think Mrs Pen used it as well, successfully. This site has a lot of good info: http://www.breastfeedinginc.ca/content.php?pagename=doc-UGV

A nurse friend of mine stopped by the house today and took a look at the kids while she visited. She weighed them and measured them both so I would have an idea of what to expect at next weeks 15 month and 2 month check-up. She said both kids look great, very healthy, but then she caught a sight of Emma's tongue and said that it might be thrush.

In an attempt to garner more information, I called my mother who gave a brief explanation - a yeast infection, easily treated, lots of babies get it, just mention it at the doctor's appointment next week. I tried calling my brother-in-law, who is a doctor in California, but he was unavailable so I left him a message. Then I called the kid's doctor's office and spoke with a nurse.

I explained the situation and she said it could possibly be thrush, to try taking a dry clothe to Em's tongue to see if it comes off. She said it could possibly just be milk, since I breastfeed and formula feed (mostly formula), but the more she talked to me, the more she seemed to think it needed to be checked out. I told her about Em's bottle strikes, how she'd take a bottle for a day then every time I offer her one or try and breast feed, she'd scream bloody murder; the tenderness in my nipples and the pain I sometimes feel in my breast; her general fussiness, rearing back while breastfeeding, etc.

The nurse went ahead and scheduled me for an early afternoon appointment and warned me to bring clothes that I won't mind getting stained purple in case it is thrush and they have to treat her in house. She said the least we could do is try and get us both comfortable. I guess my question, in my ignorance, is it really this crucial? We've been fighting this fight from the beginning. What's one more week?

What's your experience with thrush? Were you breastfeeding exclusively, formula feeding exclusively, or a mix of the two? How long did you try and wait it out until getting treatment? Did you notice it or did someone else (like your pediatrician) point it out to you?
