No way. I'd tell them it's unacceptable to use your kid's stuff because someone else doesn't have any. The teachers need to tell the other parents that they need to provide snow gear. End of story.

@kiddosc: In that case, I might take them home when you know he won't be there the next day. I get Andrea's point but if they get dirty or ripped, who is responsible? I think the daycare should have some extra clothes if they want to make sure everybody gets to go outside.

Well, my daughter didn't have snow pants the other day and the teachers let her borrow another girl's pants. I was really appreciative because DD would have been really sad if she had to stay inside. She built a snowman with her friends and was really excited about it. So that was really nice and the girl's pants were returned. DD didn't come home with them still on so the other parents probably don't even know that they were borrowed. I would be upset if your LO's snow gear wasn't returned though.

@peachykeen: I would totally be icked out by a borrowed paci. That's much worse than snowpants!

@erinbaderin: The problem isn't really that they're accidentally being grabbed by the wrong person. The teachers are intentionally using them for kids who didn't bring any when they know he's not going to be there. He stays home on Wednesdays, so I'm assuming they "borrowed" them for this kid when E was out and then never brought them back to his room. Which is why they were missing yesterday.

I'm glad to know I'm not alone in thinking it's really not acceptable for them to use his stuff for other kids.

That seems really weird, and I wouldn't be shy about speaking up. You're sending stuff for your kid to use, not to go into a communal "winter clothes" pile. Are his snowpants pretty generic? Could you sew a bright patch or something on them to make them more recognizably his, like how you'd tie a ribbon to your suitcase to make it stand out on the conveyor belt?

@kiddosc: Word. When LO was in the baby room, I kept finding another child's paci in her crib. LO never really used a paci, but we HAD sent 1-2 in just in case she changed her mind one day. I pointed it out and they said LO didn't have one, so they gave her this one. I'm sure they sanitized it, but it still kind of icked me out.

@BabyBoecksMom: What's the point of having us label everything if they're just going to pass it around anyway? DH is definitely not shy about speaking up, but I tend to feel bad about it... even if it's totally reasonable.

@Anagram: @Mamaof2: They are labeled with his name. When he saw them on the other child, the teacher said no, they're definitely that child's. So he looked in all the rooms again and asked that they check the name on those snowpants when he still couldn't find them. Sure enough, they were ours. He asked that they not be shared then.

I'm just also bothered that they never said anything to me yesterday about his missing pants, I had to hear it from my 3 year old. His teacher told DH she had assumed we took them home. Well we never take them home, his boots were still there, and why not a reminder to bring them back?

I would definitely say something to the teacher. We have this problem with DD2's room all the time, but it's for paci's, blankets and hair bows. It drives me nuts! I'm not one to be quiet about it.

Hmm... I mean, its one thing to have a mix up. It is another thing for them to loan out an item that your child needs on a daily basis.... I would definitely be questioning what the heck is going on here. If the other child isn't being dressed appropriately, they need to take it up with that parent.

I should say....we've had smaller, similar situation very rarely with LO1 at daycare--like once, she came home in someone else's pants at daycare because she still had summery back-up clothes (like capris) and we'd gotten a sudden cold snap. So when LO spilled milk all over her pants, they put someone else's back up pants on her. I washed them and returned the next day. I assumed they were someone else's that they borrowed. So it's not unheard of, but I don't think it's a big deal at all for you to say you want ONLY your LO wearing them.

Yeah, it seems like they should have loaners in hand if this is a problem. Sounds like an easy way for items to get lost.

@kiddosc: Did your husband ask the teacher in that moment why the pants were on someone else? I think I would have just lightly addressed it to the teacher then, along the vein of "Oh hey, I think there's been a mix up. LO said he couldn't find his snow pants yesterday and I just saw another kid wearing them outside. Can you get those back so LO can have them every day?".

I mean, obviously it's not a mix up (unless they aren't labeled), but then they'll see you've noticed and want them back.

At E's daycare, the kids go out unless the windchill is under 0 degrees. This means that they're in snowpants and boots every day, just to stay warm.

A few weeks ago, E came in on a day when he doesn't normally go to daycare and we found another child outside in his snowpants. Yesterday he told me that he didn't have his snowpants (I knew they should have been at school) and he had to wear someone else's. When DH dropped him off this morning he went on a room to room search for the snowpants and found them outside on a child from another room. I don't really know how to feel about this. On one hand I don't want other kids to have to go outside and be cold, but on the other hand, I provided gear for my child and don't want it ruined or unavailable when we need it.

Is it unreasonable to ask them not to use our gear on other children? Shouldn't they have a teacher available to stay in with kids who aren't properly dressed for the weather?
