I wanted to try some different kinds to see what I liked best. BUT I've loved BG for both of my kids and wish I had just gone with those. DH has liked different diapers at different stages.

I use prefolds during the day because they're easy to change and clean. I use fitteds at night because they absorb more. I use pockets for daycare and grandma use.

We find the prefolds don't absorb enough for nighttime use. We prefer to have him in cotton and fitteds hold so much more. Daycare will only use AIOs or pockets. We use pockets because they dry faster, but we stuff them with prefolds because microfiber doesn't work for us.

As others mentioned, the main advantage is that your preference can change during different stages of baby's development. I loved two piece systems when she was small. Then she became super mobile, and it became hard to keep two pieces together long enough to get it on her! So at that point I bought more AIOs.

I mostly bought our diapers new. If I had it to do over again, I think I'd do a diaper rental first to try lots of types before investing. If you are mostly buying used (especially with the intention to resale), then this isn't much of a concern because you wouldn't waste much money.

Even so, all we are really talking about is various levels of preference. As long as it fit, I could have done just fine buying an entire stash of one kind and sticking with it, even if it wasn't my favorite (how would I know anyway, with nothing to compare it to?).

In the beginning I had a mixed selection because I was told to try a bunch. I ended up with pockets.

I have flips, freetimes, fitters and covers. I thought AIO (the freetimes and Elementals) would be preferred by DH but he thought they were a pain to spray. Microfiber inserts which include freetimes didn't work for me. Microfiber didn't get clean enough for me. They hold in stink even with a FL admin approved wash routine. I stuff my pockets with prefolds.

We have a mixed stash and I'm happy we do. I started with a variety to see what we liked. I expected to prefer pockets, like aios, and be ok with prefolds and covers. Turns out, prefolds are my favorite and I absolutely hate pockets.

It's nice to have a variety of types and brands because different types are good for different settings and needs change over time. We've had totally different favorite diapers over the year we've been cloth diapering.

We've tried aios, pockets, all in twos, various covers and prefolds, fitteds, flats, etc. Brand wise, we've tried bumgenius (freetime, elemental, flip, 4.0), grovia (shells and aios), buttons (ai2), thirsties (covers, fitteds), fuzzibunz, green mountain diaper prefolds, osocozy prefolds, sustainable babyish fitteds, Alva pockets, swaddle bees (covers, now blueberry I think), bummis (covers and prefolds), and probably some I'm forgetting.

Our current favorites are bumgenius Elementals and flip, grovia, buttons and 4.0 covers with osocozy prefolds during the day, and covers with sustainable babyish fitteds at night.

So, my baby isn't here yet, but I'm slowly building a super mixed stash, with the idea that we won't know what we like best and which fit works best for our baby unless we try out a bunch of different ones. I joined a local b/s/t group on FB and have been buying one or two of each brand at a time. I figure once the baby is here and we've figured out more of what want to stick with, I can resell the ones we aren't using.

So far I've got Thirsties, Blueberry, Applecheeks, Grovia, gDiapers, and some cotton workhorse fitteds with various covers. A friend gave me a ton of inserts. Hopefully something in there and works!!

And the type of diaper that works best tends to change as your baby grows. Another plus to mixed stash :)

I did it to try out different types. And my idea was to choose what type I liked and expand the stash. It worked ok except it may have made it a little complicated I would say I wish I just went for it with a type... But I think then i might have chose a popular type like BG pocket diapers which we hated! I ended up preferring the more natural fibers and hating microfiber and the stay dry material. Couldn't have known that until I started using them. Also, I knew I wanted aio diapers but they are so much expensive, it helped to supplement my stash with other less expensive types like prefolds.

Those of you who use a mixed selection of cloth diaper types (as opposed to just all in ones or all pockets, or whatever) - why? What are the benefits of a mixed stash that I should consider?

Thanks!!!
