My extremely verbal 4 year also mixes up times of the day. He gets the difference. Enteren meals and sleep/nap but he also confuses morning afternoon and evening. Anytime it is light out is morning to him. He saw the moon during the day (4pm) and he kept saying the moon is out in the morning! I couldn't convince him otherwise.

@ShootingStar: Similarly DD often wakes up asking "is today tomorrow?"

DS is 3.5 and all sleeping is naans to him. Though he does differentiate between "big naps" and "little naps" he doesn't know what's when. He just knows big naps get stories. Score hand and little ones don't. He often asks when we're out on the weekends if he has to take a big or a little nap when we gets home.

He also gets super confused about the difference between today and tomorrow. He'll ask "where are we going when I wake up today?" And incorrect him that he means tomorrow and he gets really insistent that it's today.

With dd I feel like she thinks breakfast is a specific type of food. So she'll ask for it randomly when what she really wants is something like a granola bar.

I'm relieved to see it isn't just my kid. DD was super confused again today. We're spending the night at Grandma and Grandpa's. This morning we talked about our trip being for one night. After nap she I said something about dinner and bedtime. She was irate because I had clearly said we were spending one night and she had already slept. Mommy is a liar.

I also have a very verbal 3.5 year old and she mixes up map and sleep all the time. When she goes to bed she is always asking if it's a "short sleep" or a "long sleep". She also mixes up breakfast, lunch and dinner. Maybe they are just really lacking the concept of time.

My 3.5 year old does this (she will call lunch "dinner", or refer to night sleep as "nap"). I just figured it was pretty normal. She doesn't actually seem to have much issue grasping her schedule, she just mixes up the words sometimes.

My son's daycare teacher actually asked me how his "nap" was last night and I was confused until I realized she meant his night sleep. So apparently even someone in their 60s can do this. :P

My kiddo gets mixed up because I don't think she knows that naps and sleeps are different. She gets that she takes one per day but she will ask for her PJs and a nigh time pull-up for nap time or get confused why we aren't going to her morning activities when she wakes up in the afternoon. @danda: Sometimes I do give her a bath after lunch if she asks hahaha. She does get mixed up about that also and I don't really care when she takes it.

DS is 4.5 and every meal is lunch to him. Every sleeping period is nap to him. He just recently started to call breakfast what it actually is, and he's sometimes calling dinner that. But usually lunch and dinner are lunch to him.

I am relieved to hear that this is pretty typical. It happens to us a lot. Two nights ago DS said he was tired and wanted to take a rest, but when we started to get him ready for bedtime he got very upset because he thought it was naptime.

Mine does this too. And everything I. The past is "this last morning" and everything in the future is "tomorrow's. That last one can lead to some struggle haha

Sometimes I review the daily routine with him when he gets confused cause that less abstract but it seems normal.

Yeah, I think it's normal. My oldest does this all the time and she will be 4 in July. Even though she will say out loud, "nap is during the day, not at night!", she'll still later say when it's time for bed and dark outside "I'm not tired, I don't want to nap".

My daughter is almost 4 and has always been very verbal. I've noticed her saying things like "we'll have bath time after lunch" when she means dinner and I thought it was confusion over naming the meals. But maybe she is actually confused on the routine itself.

B is three and he does this as well, especially with naps and bedtime. At bedtime he'll ask if he can do something "after nap" and at naptime he'll ask why he doesn't have to put on his pyjamas.

Is it common for kids to do this? When do they figure it out?

My just turned 4yo DD cannot seem to figure out the order of the day. She often thinks she's going down for a nap when it's bedtime or tell me she took a really long nap when she wakes up in the morning. She'll ask for breakfast after an afternoon nap or dinner when she wakes up in the morning. She has a set routine M-F (FT preschool/care) and we have pretty regular schedules on weekends too. She doesn't really have a nap routine at home but she does have a bedtime routine.

It seems so odd to me that she still gets confused by it since she could tell you her whole daily routine if she thought about it.
