@PinkElephant: yeah I think DS was about 5 as well when he came home and told me that MLK helped us so we could sit on the bus (I cant remember his exact words) and I told him that he did that for the blacks. He looked confused - I proceeded to tell him that he was white.
He was shocked!
He looked at his arm and said I am not white, I'm brown!

So, yeah I don't think they get race at that age

@Cherrybee: hehe...oops. I'm hoping the idea fades from memory before she sees someone (anyone) using a water fountain in public and feels the need to blurt out this little tidbit.

They were learning about Armistice Day at nursery a few weeks back..... That weekend, we were in the supermarket with E and she spotted someone wearing a poppy. "Look, look, that man's wearing a poppy!" she yelled, causing lots of people to look at her and smile, then she announced "that means you have to KILL PEOPLE". Erm....

Hahaha awww! Yeah, i find that at this age kids pick and choose what they really "get" from a lesson and it's not always what the point of the lesson was. My husband once did a presentation on a south american country and basically the kids went back home with, "keep your bananas close or the monkeys will steal them from you."

Just picked up my 4.5 year old at pre-k. Today they were doing a "let's hold hands in friendship" lesson on MLK day. She came home with a cute little art project with paper dolls she decorated in different skin tones holding hands.

Then we get in the car, and she says "Kids with brown skin and kids with white skin can't drink from the same water fountain, right mommy?" GULP....oh dear. It's gonna be an interesting discussion trying to set that straight......

Have you ever had to correct a misunderstood lesson that was well intended, but went over your child's head?

My immediate reaction was to tell her "That was a rule from a long time ago - and it's not the rule anymore. It wasn't very nice, was it?" and to try to discuss our friends (and family members, since we have many SE Asian family members, and technically my kids are mixed race themselves) of different races....she proceeded to identify the blond, pale child as herself, and the dark skinned, black haired child as her favorite cousin - neither of which are accurate, haha, so I suspect she just really doesn't "get" race at this point - which honestly could be a good thing, IMO!
