That amount of mold is not significant enough to cause damage. Health problems come from huge toxic amounts in walls and around your living space and regularly breathing it in. Humidifiers mold up all the time - just wash them regularly and you'll be fine. I don't think your issues are in any way related.

@kiddosc: @LBee: @jlm22: aww thank you for your responses.

After seeing the lid yesterday I calmed down a bit since it wasn't covered in black mold like I had imagined.

I wouldn't let this get you too worked up. Mold in humidifiers is super common and unlikely to cause serious health problems. I would clean the humidifier or throw it out and just move on with life. We've had small amounts of mold in ours before and just cleaned it, it's bound to happen with a machine that is wet all the time.

Mold in a humidifier is very common. I do not think that the bloody noses were caused by mold in the humidifier - the most common symptom is rash or itchy eyes. A bloody nose would be an odd manifestation of exposure.

I liked this article a lot:
http://www.cnn.com/2014/03/04/health/upwave-humidifier/

As an aside, there are different kids of mold. The big one people worry about exposure to is toxic mold. I can't imagine that the small amounts of mold growing on your humidifier was toxic.

I would just have DH clean the humidifier, or if you feel more comfortable, just throw it out and get a new one! I honestly don't think you did any harm to your baby :) I think you would have to be breathing it in for like 24 hours a day / 7 days a week. They have home kits to detect mold that you could get if you are worried it's still in the air. And I wanted to pull out a quote from the below link: "there are very few reports that toxigenic molds found inside homes can cause unique or rare health conditions such as pulmonary hemorrhage or memory loss. These case reports are rare, and a causal link between the presence of the toxigenic mold and these conditions has not been proven."

ETA: I don't know if there is any way to see if LO's and your symptoms are related? It could be a coincidence. When I'm using our humidifier I make sure to clean it a couple times a week as it's so easy for mold to build it. Don't worry, mama!

So I finally got around to looking at it and here are pics of inside the ears of the Crane Cow. Thank god it wasn't as bad as I had imagined but I'm still freaking out. DH said it wasn't there last week when he refilled it though and that maybe it was because it wasn't dried completely when he reassembled it after washing it. We always use filtered water to refill it FWIW.

@regberadaisy: thx for the response. We definitely threw it out. And I left a message for the OB, and emailed the pedi already.

I would throw it out. Many humidifiers have so many hidden nooks and crevices. If it's got mold I would throw it out especially eith you being pregnant.

I would ask your doctor and pediatrician about the other questions. Both our pediatrician and Ob have a after hours nurse call service. Does yours?

Hi everyone - I am so freaking out right now because my husband found mold in our humdifier (a light pink ring on the base of the humidifier and some small pale black spots on the lid) this morning.

My 2y/o DS has had two bloody noses in the last month (no clue if it's related or if he was picking his nose)

I'm 10 wks preg and been fighting what appears to be a sinus infection for Over a week now. fever, chills, head pressure, headaches, plugged ear, etc. Fever has pretty much disappeared and all other symptoms have lessened quite a bit after 4 days on antibiotics.

1. Are DS and my symptoms related to the humidifier - he sleeps with us for the second half of the night.
2. Could breathing in this mold be harmful to baby #2?
3. What treatment is there for mold that we may need?
4. Anyone else had mold in their humdifier?
